THE MURRAY NEWS, FRIDAY, AUGUST 10, 1000
His Intelligent Dog.
“I have known some peculiar
circumstances in my life,” said
the man with the purple nose,
according to the Chicago News.
“Once I had a dog that was very
devoted to my little boy, 7 years
old, One seldom saw Harry
without Tige or Tige without
Harry. One day in summer on
my tront veranda I had dozed
off to sleep early in the evening—
just after dinner, in fact. When
I went to sleep Harry and Tige
were playing on the front lawn.
Pretty soon—or so, at least, it
seemed to me—I woke to find
Tige whining and scratching at
my chair. It had grown almost
entirely dark in the meantime,
but I could see the look of anx¬
iety and uneasiness on that ex¬
pressive canine countenance.
“Now and then the dog would
utter a sharp bark and swiftly
run toward the pathway. I look¬
ed for Harry; he was nowhere to
be seen. It is unnecessary to
s$y that I was instantly alarmed.
I hurried with the dog to the
river bank, where the animal
showed still greater excitement
and uneasiness. He leaped up
and down and looked out at the
ripples widening from a disturb
ance in the middle of a deep
place in the stream.
“That was absolutely convinc¬
ing. With a wild cry I rushed
back to the house and aroused
the family.
“Mv wife came running out on
a balcony and waved her hand to
rne. As I paused for breath with
which to break the awful news,
she said:
“ ‘Sh-h-h! Don’t whoop like an
Indian that way. I’ve just got
Ilarry quieted down in bed after
his muskrat hunt with Tige, and
you get him all excited again.’
“Then I went and beat that
dog shamefully.
"Since that time I have been
in no mood to listen to the ster
otyped tale of the intelligent,
life-saving kioodlo.”
There is nothing so pleasant as
that bright, cheerful, at-peace
with-the-world feeling when you
sit down to your breakfast. There
is nothing so conducive to good
word and good results, The
healthy man with the healthy
mind and body is a better fellow,
abetter workman, a better citi¬
zen than the man or woman who
is handicapped by some disability
however slight. A slight disor¬
der of the stomach will derange
your body, your thoughts and
your disposition. Get away from
the morbidness and the blues.
Keep your stomach in tune and
both your brain and body will re¬
spond. Little indiscretions of
overeating can l»e easily correct¬
ed and you will be surprised to
see how much better man you
are. Try a little Kodol For Dys¬

How Reed Got Even With Dingley.
When the town of Brunswick,
Me., celebrated, some years ago,
tlve one hundred and fiftieth an¬
niversary of its incorporation,
there was a big dinner, and
“Tom” Reed and Nelson Dingley
ley were present, and were of
course, called upon to speak.
Dingiey spoke lirst and said,
in conclusion that he had made
no preparation, and would make
way for a gentleman who had
come with a prepared speech,
meaning Reed, who got back at
Dingley as follows:
“Mr. Toastmaster, I am sorry
lo begin an apology. Some time
ngo I attended a celebration like
this in Unity, in Waldo county,
and there heard Gov. Dingley
refer touchingly to Unity as his
birthplace. 1 afterward learned
that the Governor was also born
in Durham, in the county of
Androscoggin, and l know that
nothing but mv presence here
prevents his claiming he was
born in Brunswick, too. And I
feel like apologizing for being
here, for it will hereafter be an
honor to have shared in the
birthpla ce of Gov. Ding ley.”

arch-enemy, the policeman,
News.
He picked out a prosperous
looking individual on whom lie !
thought his hard-luck story would
have the desired effect. His
specialty was “dumbness,” he
gurgled, in his frantic effort to
tell how hard up he was for a
little coin. Words formed on
his lips, but the only sound that
came was a noisy Kentucky
breath. He shook his head from
side to side in self-pity. To add
an extra heart throb the beggar
made his fingers spell out his
troubles at lightning speed.
Then light seemed to break in
upon the subject, and he opened
fire on the beggar with a return
volley of finger twitching. With
a disgusted look the mendicant
said:
“He’s a real dummy, I guess I
got it bad.”
“I guess you did,” said the
“real dummy,” in a very audible
voice. “I can’t talk on my
hands any better than you can,
but they come in handy once in
a while in finding out if a
‘dummy 1 is really dumb.”

Sir John’s Advice.
The late Sir John Macdonald,
Premier of Canada, one evening
was present at a public dinner at
which he was expected to deliver
a rather important speech, says
the Minneapolis Journal. In the
conviviality of the occasion he
forgot the more serious duty of
the evening, and when at a late
hour he rose his speech was by
no means so luminous as it might
have been. The reporter, know¬
ing that it would not do to print
his notes***they stood, called on
Sir John next day and told him
that he was not quite sure of
having secured an aicurate re¬
port. He was invited to read
over his notes, but he had not
got far when Sir John interupted
him with “That is not what I
Raid.” There was a pause and
Sir John continued, “Let me re¬
peat my remarks.” lie then
walked up and down the room
and delivered a most impressive
speech in the blaring of the
amused reporter, who took down
every word as it fell from his
lips. Having thanked Sir John
for his courtesy, he was taking
his leave when he was recalled
to receive this admonition:
“Young man, allow me to give
you this word of advice: Never
again attempt to report a public
speaker when you are drunk.”
