PROMINENT MEN
WERE ARRESTED
Seven Columbusites Arraigned
for Gambling.
Columbus, Ga., September 22.
—Seven well known men were
arraigned in the recorder’s court
today on the charge of gambling,
as the result of a raid made last
night by the police in rooms
above a Broad street saloon.
All the defendents, who made
bond immediately after their ar¬
rest, asked that their cases be
continued until Tuesday, which
was done.
The raid which was made sud¬
denly, and with complete suc¬
cess by the police, created a
great Hurry in local sporting
circles.
Of late some professional gam¬
blers have been operating here,
it is said, and quite a number of
people who do not ordinarily play
and bet have been quietly taking
a hand at a game at times. A
good sized “class” was in attend¬
ance when the bluecoats stepped
in last night.
Starving to Death.
Because her stomach was so
weakened by useless drugging
that she could not eat, Mrs.Mary
H. Walters, of St. Olair St., Go
lumbus, O., was literally starving
to death. She writes: “My stom¬
ach was so weak from useless
drugs that I could not eat, and
my nerves so wrecked that I could
not sleep; and not before I was
given up to die was I induced to
try Electric Bitters; with the
wonderful result that improve¬
ment began at once, and ft com¬
plete cure followed,” Rest health

OFFICERS RAID
MACON SPORTS
Chief Connor Captures Gambling
Paraphernalia.
Macon, Ga., September 22.-—
A raid on a white club room in
Wall street was planned by
Chief Grannville Connor of the
police force last night, and with
a squad of picked men he closed
in shortly after midnight and
arrested Frank Nelson and George
Beaver, the operators of the
room. He loaded the parapher¬
nalia on a dray and now has it
stored away in an office at the
city hall to be used as evidence.
There was a roulette wheel, faro
banks, chips, dice and other de¬
vices captured in the raid.
Nelson and Beaver were placed
on trial before Recorder Notting¬
ham and there admitted their
guilt. One was placed under
$500 bond and the other under
bond of $250 for their appearance
at trials in the city court.
The Optimist's Prescription.
Every line in his drawn face
suggested dejection as he walked
along the Great White Way last
evening, says the New York Her¬
ald. He appeared unmindful of
the fashionably dressed women
who tripped by, of the crowds
entering the brilliantly illumi¬
nated theaters, of the laughter
and the music—in fact, all the
surroundings of pleasure and etu
joyment and beauty did not
lighten his load of depression and
gloom,
Thus he walked like pessimism
personified until he reached Her¬
ald Square, when he was aroused
from his lethargic reverie by a
stout, ruddy-faced man, who
grasped him by the hand and
shouted laughingly:
“Why, hello, Brown, where
bound? Gee, you look as if all
the misfortunes of earth were
resting on you! What’s up? Did
you go broke?”
“No, Smith,” drawled the pes
sirnistic one, “haven’t lost a
cent.”
“Are you ill!”
“No.”
“Are you in love? n
“Oh, no,”
“Just got back from your va¬
“No; not as bad as that.”
“Well, then, what’s up, any
way?” shouted the optimistic one.
“I’ve got a fit of the blues.
now you know it.”
“is that all?\
“All? Isn’t that enough/ If
there is anything more depress
0 r discouraging than a fit of
the blues I would like to know
if.»
“Why, that’s nothing at all,”
the optimist, “lean cure

“Yes, I suppose you are going

“No, siree, It’s simply a -mat
ter of expression. I used to suf
f er very much from the blues,
but one day I discovered a rem¬
edy.”
“Well, what is it?”
“Why, ail you have to do is to
turn up the corners of your mouth
as when you are about to smile,
and I’ll bet you you can’t feel
blue when your mouth is in that
position.”
The pessimist did so, am] the
melancholy look in his face at
once vanished, giving way to a
b,road grin.
‘■‘Well, I would never have bt-.
Jieved it, but you’re right, old
man; you can’t feel blue if you
turn up the corners of your mouth.
Come, let’s have a drink.”
And arm in arm the two friends
s untered smilingly into a nearby
ctfe. and he who had been pes
si nistic a moment before was
now full of hope and optimism.
