Died After a Brief Illness Last
Monday*
SICK ONLY A FEW HOURS
Paralysis Was the Cause of His Death
—Good Man, Tax Collector of Mur¬
ray County and Confederate Veter¬
an Gone.
On last Monday at 2 o’clock p.
m. Tax Collector Joshua Chap
man died after an illness of short
duration. ,
He had complained of having
a severe headache Sunday after
nodu, but nothing serious was
thought to be the matter. He
retired Sunday night in snppos
edly good health and at 5 o’clock
the next morning he was stricken
with that dread pisetue, paraly
sis, and at *2 o’clock in the after¬
noon died.
Mr. Chapman was just entering
his second term of office as tax
collector,winch office he had filled
with credit to himself and satis
faction to the county, lie was a
confederate veteran,having serv¬
ed through the war of the rebel
ion on the side which he thought
was right.
Joshua Chapman will be missed
from the county and community
in which he lived.

a large crowd had gathered to
pay the last tribute of respect
to a good man.

On last Sunday afternoon Miss
Mary Groves and Mr. Jeff Jen¬
kins were married at the resi¬
dence of ’Squire J. M. Campbell.
Mrs. Jenkins is tlm daughter of
ex-Sberiff W. 0. Groves and a
great favorite among the young
people of Spring Place and sur¬
rounding community, while Mr.
Jenkins is one of the foremost
young men of the county.
We wish the popular young
people much success in their jour¬
ney through life.

list of friends, while Air- Robin¬
son is one of the most popular
young men in the county. He
has been interested with his
father in the mercantile business
for several years.

We have not written to The
News’ in some time, since our
pcoole were all busy attending
either to tlieir own or someone
else’s affairs, and
news was scarce, but we are glad
to say everything is moving along
now and the i»w year
bids fair to be a prosperous one.
The Farmers’ Union here is a
live organization with fifteen or
more members and additions be¬
ing expected. Almost all pro¬
fessions have organizations for
mutual benefits, and certainly
there is no reason for the farmer
to be behind when he stops to
think how much of the world’s
benefits comes from his hand.
Tnere is quite a little sickness
in our corner.
B. W. Gladden is having a
siege witli lagrippe.
Mrs. McElreath has been sick
for some time.
Mrs. Elrod lias been sick since
Christmas.
J. F. Hanna, of Sumach, visit¬
ed his mother Sunday.

Not seeing anything from our
delightful little town, 1 decided
to give yon a few dots.
Our burg begins to assume the
proportions and appearance of
quite a little city. New houses
continue to come up as is by
magic. During the holidays two
nice little cottages were erected,
and Keith A Harris are complet¬
ing a commodious new storehouse
on Glenn street; Mr. Tyler has a
handsome new house, and Mr.
Elliott a cottage in course of
construction; Mrs. Steed and
several others are preparing to
build in the immediate future.
The Christmas tree for the
benefit of the Sunday school was
quite a success.
Some of our young folks at¬
tended a dance at Ben Keith’s.
Mr. and Mrs. Wright, also Mr,
and Mrs. Isenhower entertained
the young people at pound sup
pers, Mr. and Mrs. Nantiey en
tertained a few couples at six
o’clock dinner on the former’s
birthday, last Saturday.
Miss Peeples, of Holly Creek,
visited the Misses Coffey Satur
day and Sunday.
Miss Mattie Lou Walls was the
guest of the Misses Davis a few
days last week.
Our charming home girls who
are-away teaching lent the at¬
traction of their presence during
the holidays.
Misses Lena Keith and Annie

Mr. Julian, of the L. & N. rail¬
road, visited here several days
last week.

Dave Hall, a boy about 12 years
old, is very ill at Nicholls from
poison from eating some canned
sardines. He lias been very sick
for several days and while he
lingers, the doctors do not think
he will recover.
The initiatory steps for the
organization of a “Law and Order
league” were taken at a meeting
of the representative citizens of
| Augusta. Ex-Governor Northern,
president of the business men’s
gospel union of Atlanta, was
present and addressed the roeet
ing in t he interest of the move
ment.

Recorder N. R. Broyles, of At¬
lanta, has sworn out a warrant
against one J. K. Wilson whose
name was signed to a card pub¬
lished in the Atlanta News,
charging the recorder with col¬
lecting tines from many parties
simply for the purpose of swell¬
ing the city’s revenue from his
court. The charge is denounced
by the recorder as absolutely
false and he has demanded a re¬
traction from the News.
