The race for the office of
Tux Collector waxeth warm.
By the death of Sherry Mc
Auley Dalton has lost one of
her very best citizens and his
u n timely death is a great blow
to that city.
There are a few places on
o.ir public roads that should
be repaired these pretty dajs.
They are good now but when
it rains they are almost im
p issable. A few' loads of
gravel would fix them so they
would never need any more
repairing.
If all of our merchants have
b >light something from every
drummer who has been to see
them since the first of Janua¬
ry Spring Place will be loaded
with anything you can think
of within the next 'few days.
A regular army of them work
the town every week.
In another column of The
N lews will be found a call for
a good roads convention,
which will meet here next
Tuesday. Every man who
has the welfare of the county
at heart should attend this call
and lend all the assistadee
possible in this good work.
It is currently reported that
the surveying party on the
Savannah, Augusta & North
ern railroad is within a few
miles of Spring Place to the
South. This is another big
thing tor Spring Place and
Murray county and will add
thousands of dollars to her
already fast growing wealth.
Watch Spring Place.
'The months of January and
February are the dullest
months in the year in the
newspaper business. Most
advertisers have gotten the
idea that it does not pay to
advertise in these months, but
it is the opinion ot men who
have tried it that this is the
very best time. In the spring
and fall when money is plen¬
tiful and people are buying
their wearing apparel for the
summer and winter respect¬
ively, every merchant gets his
share of the trade. Not so in
the dul months. The 'man
who advertises gets the trade
an 1 by having a gaod trade in
these dull time 00 the conse
n is that V sells more
<s*
only advertises three or four
months in the year.
The price of paper has ad¬
vanced; printers’ ink is up;
labor is 50 per cent higher
than it was twelve months ago
and to cap the climax the gov¬
ernment is trying to advance
the price of postage on news¬
papers. What’s a poor coun¬
try editor going to do about
it when he has to depend
largely on his subscribers for
a support, and a big per cent
of them so negligent in their
debt-paying proclivities that
they have let the idea take full
possession of them that he
never needs a cent for any¬
thing? Verily, his lot is a
hard one.
