One representative in Wash¬
ington is very much worried
because some of the free seed,
records, etc., sent out by him
have not reached their desti
nation . lie does not know
what an accommodation it b
to the people not to get su;h
tilings, for the records are
never read and the seeds will
not sprout.
free seed burden useless.
It was not unnatural that
the members of the lower
house of congress should de
sire to retain the free see:'
distribution privilege which
helps no little in the matter ot
retaining friends, and there
was, doubtless, little surprisi
when they reversed the rec¬
ommendation of the commit
tee on agriculture against iB
C( ntinuance.
But the congressmen art
misiaken, if they think any
considerable number ot the
people want this sort of free
seed distribution kept up. Ii
it really served any good pur¬
pose, it would be a different
matter. As the matter stands
at present, it consists simply
of the government’s giving
away annually through the
congressmen several million
packages of common garden
seed which are really no bet¬
ter than, and seldom as good
a 5, those retailed at the seed
stores.
So far as anybody knows
no reports have ever been
made upon the results attained
from this seed, and the out¬
come of it has not been the
discovery of any better or
more productive varieties.
If there is going to be any
government distribution of
seed at all, it should be that
now proposed through the
United States department of
agriculture — a distribution
whereby the best results can
he obtained, of new, rare and
valuable varieties of seed.
The senate has yet to deal
with tlie matter and it will,
probably, look upon it with a
different eye from that of the
house.
The free seed distribution,
as it has been conducted for
years, has been generally con¬
demned bf agricultural bodies
all over the country. These
bodies are composed of men
who ought to, and do, know
something about the matter,
uul they do not want it.
It is to be hoped the senate
will put an end to it.—Atlanta
