STOLE CARLOAD
OF .MERCHANDISE
Also Hid the Freight Car from
Central Officials. Three
White Men Have Been
Arrested.
Macon, Ga., April 19.—Charg¬
ed with stealing a freight car
loaded with all kinds of merchan¬
dise and making way with the
goods, Strauss Ellis, Will Thorn¬
ton, and George Mathis, three
white men, who have served as
brakemen for the Central rail
way only a short time, were ar¬
before Recorder Cabiniss
this morning and bound over to
the state court under cliatges of
larceny. They admitted that
they had found the car open and
removed the goods, afterwards
disposing of them as best they
could without being discovered.
Tne case was reported to the au¬
thorities and after a long search
the men were run down.
The case, according to the olli
cers, was a novel one in that the
employees of the road managed
to remove the car from the yards
and place it where they could
steal all they wanted while the
railway officials were making ef¬
forts to locate it.
They were said to have placed
it between two empty cars that
were being shifted to the tracks
of the Roystei Guano Company.
While it was out of the yards
they removed a quantity of
ing and the other
The officers located a man
wearing some of the goods missed
and in this manner traced the
stealing to the three white
men. The prisoners

implicated two other men, whose
names were not given. No other

becoming the most popular of all drinks, which is mainly
attributable to its excellent medicinal qualities, and its
lack of disagreeable “after effects.” My genuine

J CONVICTS SHOT DURING
ENCOUNTER WITH POSSEE
Robqetl House in Open Day and
Took Money and Clothes.
Summerville, Ga., April 19.—
Yesterday morning about 8
o’clock, it is thought four negro
convicts, members of the party
who recently escaped from .Dur¬
ham coal mines at Pittsburg, in
Dade county, entered the home
of J. E. Denson, in Chattooga
county, and ransacked it, secur¬
ing $50 in money, clothing and
provisions.
They were discovered as they
were leaving and an alarm given.
A posse of citizens was soon form¬
ed and arming themselves gave
chase. The convicts were over¬
taken in a patch of woods at a bant
3 o’clock yesterday afternoon and
in a fusillade one of the convicts
was killed and two others were
probably fatally wounded. The
fourth made his escape and was
still being pursued last night.
The sheriff of Chattooga coun¬
ty, who had been notified of the
robbery, together with deputies,
arrived on the scene shortly af¬
ter the negroes had been shot,
took charge of the wounded and
carried them to Summerville,
where they were placed in jail
last night.
The body of the dead negro
was also brought to Summerville.
The citizens of the countv are
very much wrought up over the
a (fair.
The convicts secured other
clothing at the home of Denson
and threw off the stripes.
State Penitentiary Warden
Jake Moore has returned from
Dade county, where he went to
investigate the escape of the
twelve convicts from the Durham
mines Monday night.
With the affray in Chattooga
county the negroes are all ac¬
counted for. Five were captured
near the mines, and only one is
still at liberty.
None of the three white es¬
capes has been heard of since the
twelve got away. The escape
effected by one of the negroes, a
preacher named Sam Johnson,
gaining possession of a key that
unlocked a gate to an abandoned
wing of the mines.
The twelve conspirators found
a weak place, through which they
dug in a short time.
An Insidious Danger
One of the worst features of
kidney trouble is that it is an in¬
sidious disease qand “before the
victim realizes his danger he may
have a fatal malady. Take Fo¬
ley’s Kidney Cure at the first
sign of trouble as it corrects ir¬
regularities and prevents Bright’s
disease and diabetes. Rouse &

STATUE OF' JEFFERSON DAVIS
Is Hauled Through Streets of
Richmond by 3,000
Children.
Richmond, Ya., April 39.—By
means of a double rope, two city
blocks long, 8,000 childreivof this
city yesterday hauled through
the streets to the site, the bronze
statue for the Jefferson Davis
monument, which will be un¬
veiled June 8.
The scene was witnessed by
thousands of people. The rope
used in hauling the statue was
cut into many thousands of pieces
for souvenirs.
The children were led by Lee
and Picket Camps of the Confed¬
erate Veterans, and these in turn
were headed by a handsomely u
niformed boy fife and drum corps.
Many of the girls among the chil¬
dren were dressed in white, and
a large proportion of the youthful
enthusiasts carried small Confed¬
erate battle Hags.

Pensions in \% ( >
Will Reach Millions.
In 1909 it is expected that pen¬
sions will reach tlie top-notch—a
round million dollars in Georgia.
After that time the decline
will begin, increasing yearly as
the beneficiaries pass away. This
year the appropriation was $890,
900, with an estimated deficit of
near $80,000, which has not been
paid, because the last penny of
the fund has been exhausted.
The legislature this year will
probably increase the appropria¬
tion to $925,000, which will still
leave a deficit, because many new
pensioners are being added to the
rolls under acts passed last year.
Commissioner Lindsey determind
this year to leave off the new pen¬
sioners in fifty-five counties, be¬
lieving that it would cover the
dsficit in a way to pay all the old
pensioners.
However, Dooly county suffer¬
ed because none of the Dension
ers there was paid. Only a part
of those in Schley received any
money. Unless loans can be ne¬
gotiated or some liberal-minded
Georgian comes to the fore, all
of these pensioners will have to
do without their pay until the
legislature meets.
Use Kennedy’s Laxative Cough
Syrup. Children like its pleas¬
ant taste, and mothers give it
hearty endorsement. Contains
no opiates, but drives out the
cold through the bowels. Made
in strict conformity to Bure Food
and Drugs Law. Recommended
and sold by S. H. Kelly.
