The anti-pass bill is now
under probe in the Georgia
legislature with the Hall anti
pi ss bill, but the people will
never realize any benefit from
this source should it pass
without a dissenting vote.
The weather man is at last
sending weather too hot for
those who grumbled so much
about the cold weather in the
spring months, the mercury
reaching above the century
mark several times in this city.
The other day a train wreck
occurred in Michigan in
which forty people were
killed and more than one hun¬
dred injured. An excursion

sand persons and a freight
train ran together.
The prohibition bill is still
under discussion in the house
of representatives and there
is a strong fight going on for
and against it. This bill
passed the senate almost
unanimously, but the house
seems to be about equally di
vided on this most important
question.
A man in a neighboring
town, who took a city paper
in preference to a county pa¬
per, because he got more pa¬
per for the money, was at¬
tracted by the advertisement
of a fire escape which would

Senator W. C. Martin in¬
troduced an amendment to
the state prohibition bill pro¬
viding that in case the prohi¬
bition bill should ever be re¬
pealed if enacted into a law,
the state local option law ap¬
proved September 18 , iK85,
should be re vi v e d. T h e
amendment failed of adop¬
tion, buUfcg passage was not
pressed/ However, no one
doubts the wisdom of such
action, for.if the prohibition
bill is ever repealed the state
would be without a local op
tion law.—Dalton Argus.

AN EPOCHAL DAY IN GEORGIA
:
Friday was an epochal day
in the history of legislation in
Georgia, At the great state
capital, in which has trans
pil ed many scenes of momen¬
tous importance, there oc¬
curred one of the most remar¬
kable manifestations of a pop¬
ular public sentiment ever
witnessed in any section of
the country.
Throughout the long morn¬
ing hours of the sultry July
day, men representing both
sides of the prohibition qncs
tion contended with fierce
tenacity for every point ol
vantage. Parliamentary tac¬
tics, alert wit and a genius
for the manipulation and Icn
dership of men, were
into play in the struggle for
supremacy, waged by repre
sentatives on both sides of the
prohibition issue.
The galleries were crowd
ed with interested spectators,
many of whom were members
of the Woman’s Christian
Temperance Union.
Throughout the great hall
of legislation surged waves
and billows of
heat.
A southern summer was at
its height and men and women
looked weary and worn as the
hours dragged their length
along. Above the contention
which waged
, the speaker the . *

ers directed the wonderful
compaign.
Now one side would gain a
point, then the other would
rise to a mastery of the situa
turn until by sheer force of
numerical strength a test vote
was taken for a second read
iug of the prohibition meas¬
ure.
From 10 o’clock until 3 '.23
o’clock the battle had been
fiercely waged to prevent this
second reading of the prohi¬
bition bill. Like the tide of

1 luce minutes past three, the
tidal wave broke in majestic
power, s-wcepmg evervthiire
before it, and virtually giving
to Georgia a glorious prohibi¬
tion. triumph.
Then what a scene ! Strong
men wept with joy, and the
more nnemotionnl clasped
each other’s hands in brother*
iy affection. The aisles were
filled with talking, shouting
advocates of prohibition to
whom had come at this fate¬
ful moment the fultiillments
of the dreams, hopes and as¬
pirations of many years.
Women in the galleries
waved fans and handkerchiefs
m an ecstacy of delight. The
pride and glory of this won
derful hour entered into the
hearts and souls of both men
and women alike with the
