Atlanta is getting fierce,
there being one hundred and
thirty-seven arrests there in
thirty-two hours beginning at
4 p. m., Saturday.
Senator E. W. Pittus, of
Alabama, has crossed the
silent stream at the ripe old
age of «S6, He was stricken
with paralysis while at the
breakfast table and never re¬
gained consciousness.
The trial at Boise, Idaho,
is progressing with snail-like
rapidity. After several weeks
in his trial William 1>. Ha}
wood has been declaied hoi
guilty of the murder of formei
Governor Steunenberg.
Kev. 8. L. Crouch, a Meth¬
odist minister of Chattanooga,
in order to protect his own
.life shot -uid instantly killed a
negf©, this being his second
victim, he having killed a
negro about three months ago
in defense of his wife.
J. L. Con kin, was set upon
and quite seriously stabbed
Saturday night in Atlanta.
This is thought to be James
Conkin, of Dalton, who is
well known in Spring Place,
and whose friends here arc
pained to learn of his misfor¬
tune.
President W. W. Finley,
of the Southern railway has
been arrested in Asheville,
N. C., charged with violating
the state railway rate law,
along with a ticket agent. It
seems that the North Caro¬
lina authorities are no re¬
specters of persons as they
get the great and the small
alike.
The barrooms in Valdosta
were closed Saturday night
and it is thought ten thousand
dollars’ worth of Mountain
dew was sold on the closing
day. Bells were tolled from
11 to to 1 z p. m. and the
bars were closed to the tune
of them. The town has been
“wet’’ ever since its founding,
nearly fifty years ago.
Atlanta seems to he some¬
what troubled over the ques¬
tion of a pump mixed with
the Georgia representatives.
The Atlanta authorities can't
decide what kind of a pump
to use. We would suggest,
for the benefit of the city as
well as the state to get a hot
air pump and use it on some
of our representatives.

NO LYNCHING IN MURRAY.
Having seen a dispatch in the Atlanta Constitution of
Monday from Chatswortb to the effect that “Colonel Henry
addressed the large crowd assembled, and on the assurance
that the prisoner would he kept here they dispersed, and
serious trouble was averted,’’in reference to John Harper,
the slayer of our tearless sheriff lien C. Keith.
We believe it is right to let the people know the true
standing of affairs in this matter, and we take the privtelge
of doing so as far as we are able.
It is true there was quite a crowd in Spring Place Sunday
afternoon, and while there were sortie firearms among them,
there was not the slightest action to cause anyone to
a lynching, for those firearms were carried by men who
had been on guard duty at the jail and were deputized to
guard ’ it again Sunday night. aftefnoon
Spring Place Lodge I. O. O. F. met Sunday in
the Masonic Ilall and the meeting had only been adjourned
a ve ry short time when the Whitfield county authorities ar
rived from Dalton, hence the crowd.
Surely no sane man would accuse a member of this
sacred order of Mob Violence, especially in a case of this
kind.
Msoit is unknown who reported to Judge Fite that mob
violence «i. fcaveti, which cored him to i»»e a„ order for
the removal of the prisoner to Fulton county jail.
While \\ Hilt mob moo uoici.ee \ iolentfe was feared by some there was not
even the slightest movement ol the 4 rout. nsseniSLeu nere
Sundav afternoon to suggest a b itching, for a more sober,
orderly crowd never assembled any w here than this one,
and, while we deeply deplore the death of Mi. Keith, we
hope the public will not heed die report that a “lynching
was narrowly averted ’ in Murnq, for such was not the
case.
