dosta of a tragedy in Echols
county, in which C. E. Mercer
was shot dead by W. W. Pening
ton. Both men were in the em¬
ploy of T. G. Culbreth, Penning¬

The students of the Waycross
public schools have just started
a new line of work that will
prove of much good to them,
besides proving of interest
throughout the city. Each week
one of the three schools, and
then several grades of each
school, will edit a page in the
afternoon paper there, this being
arranged after several meetings
and conferences with the super¬
intendents and principals.
An old residence is to be re¬
moved from the government lot
to make ready for the $55,000
postoffice building that is soon to
be erected at Gainesville. The
new building will be a magnifi¬
cent structure for a city of this
size. It is to be of pebble-dash¬
ed brick, after the fashion of
George Vanderbilt’s home,“Bilt
rnore,” at Asheville, N. C.

men and a negro—made their
escape from the Milton county
jail. Saws were used in cutting
an entrance through the floor.

the jailer’s w ife. The jailer was
