GORDON LEE
In this issue of The News
appears the announcement ol
Hon. Gordon Lee for re-elec
tion to congress from the
Seventh congressional Dis¬
trict,
He sajs he wishes to serve
the people of this district foi
one more term when he will
retire from the field “with the
consciousness of duty wel
fulfilled,’’ and he also says he
M makes no other claim upon
your further suffrage than
that of duty faithfully per
formed.”
Mr. Lee has only served the
people of the Seventh District
a short time, but during that
time he has made an enviable
record and has endeared him¬
self to the people of the dis¬
trict by the faithful perform
ance of his duties.
During Mr. Lee’s terms the
Seventh has gotten appropri¬
ations amounting to several
million dollars, and the dis¬
trict now has more miles of
rural routes than any other
district in the state, besides
two government buildings,
part of which entitles him to
the name of the “working
congressman,”
Whiletserving the people of
the Seventh district only two
terms, he has done more for
them than others in twice the
time, and there is no doubt in
our mind that he will serve
another term, at least.

Our sympathy goes out to

only six of its employees were
laid up with la grippe at one

The political pot has begun
to simmer and will be boiling
within a short time. In an
interview with the North
Georgia Citizen Col. R, J.
McCamy says that he will be
in the race for judge of the
Cherokee circuit and will an¬
nounce in a short time. Col.
McCamy, in our opinion,
would make an able judge,
and we predict a strong fol¬
lowing for him, in Murray
county especially, his old
home county.
special Announcement Regarding the
National Pure Food and Drug haw.
We are pleased to announce
that Foley’s Honey and Tar for
coughs, colds and lung troubles
is not affected by the National
Pure Food and Drug law as it
contains no opiates or other
harmful drugs, and we recom
mend it as a safe remedy for
children and adults. G. H. Ar

The Lobbyist.
We start to thinking on a topic.
Our minds run on ami on into
the minutia, going on and ex¬
ploring everything as it goes, I
started out on the lobbyist. He
is a wonderful product. The
main asset of the lobbyist is lip.
It is said that brass is
more valuable than gold.
without lip, the lobbyist is
“sme qua non.”
Some years now ®one, the
companies conceived the
that the county Board of
tion of Murray county would need
their valuable help in
the right books. It so happened
that I kept those agents.
the number, was an elderly man
who had developed a vast
of lip. About the first thing he
said was: “I want this room;”
my room. I treated them all
well, and was paid well for it.
This particular one seemed to
think every thing was going his
way, but when the smoke cleared
away, the Board had adopted
one book he represented. That
book would not have been adop¬
ted but for a remark one of them
heard me make out of deference
for my knowledge of books that
one was adopted. Well, after he
left, he wrote back to me abus¬
ing me for influencing the Board.
At the same time, one company
had a little modest fellow to rep¬
resent them. Most of the books
he worked for were adopted.
You see how well Iid worked. It
is amusing to see those of muchly
developed lip think they are so
influential when some, though
have more influ¬
with a word than they with
This thing of lobying has
run to seed. Many Legislatures
have passed laws—I am told—
forbidding lobbying. It is
amusing to see certain persons
come to town and sit around the
courts, meetings of the various
boards, etc., waiting and longing
to suggest something. They
suggest by their looks that they
are as wise as owls. “Wise men
foresee the evil and avoid it; but
fools go on and are punished.”
That is as true now as it was
3000 years ago when uttered,
This subject suggests another,
v ’ z; nature i® divided into ani
and inanimate. Animate,

that have not are called inverte
brates. Those that raise their

vertebrates are tbe most
powerful and are the highest de
veloped of animate nature.
THE MURRAY NEWS, FRIDAY, JANUARY 24, 1908
Among the lowest order of ani¬
mate nature, we find the jelly
fish. It consists of a mass of
loosely constructed organisms in¬
capable of much locomotion.
The “Homa” seems to be the
highest type of animate nature,
because it is controlled by an in¬
tellectual faculty, denominated
by psychologists, the “Will.”
How wonderful that faculty!
Something touches my eyelid.
The will says close that lid to
prevent injury. How quick! We
will and the thing is done, wheth¬
er the motive or the judgement
was right or wrong. The will
may be controlled by passion,
judgement having abdicated for
a short time. Harper controled
by anger fired the fatal shot. He
willed to pull the trigger. For
that freedom of the will, he will
suffer the consequences. We
speak of a person who can decide
-—make a decision and stick to it,
as having “back bone.” How
weak one is who—like the jelly
fish must be moved about by
something else! I don’t think a
person should be all back bone.
That would be like the animal
whose ears and lungs are so well
developed. The person who has
stamina enough to let you know
where he is, commands your
teem. “Stamen” the part
the flower that develops
seeds.
•Daniel Boone was captured by
the Indians. They treated him
kindly because he was such a
worthy foe. They took off his
ropes that bound him and invited
him to shoot with them. He
managed to let them beat him
shooting so as to please them.
By that means, he escaped.
Did any one ever try to run
your business for you without
pay? I have done about as well
as most of my neighbors, but I
have done it without my friends’
advice. A man who never
out a grape vine in his life,
vised me to put the Jackson
lot in grapes! “Thunder,” said
I,“l have more than we can take
care of at the house.” An over
zealous fraud said: “You must
rest your horses or they will soon
be played out.” “Tell me how,”
said I. “Get another horse,”
said he. Miserable tormentors!
If every one would attend to the
business of self, they would show
evidences of thrift. No one has
profited by helping me attend to
my business, and I know I have
not. Strange isn’t it, that men
are so proficient in business?
Other men’s. Poor Lobbyist, I
now bid you farewell, by my per¬
mission, forever.

PREPARE THE MIXTURE
YOURSELF AS ADVISED
Recipe Is Easily Prepared at
Small Cost, and Many Swear
By It.
Mix the following by shaking
well in a bottle, and take in tea¬
spoonful doses after meals and at
bedtime:
v* Fluid Extract Dandelion, one
half ounce; Compound Kargon,
one ounce; Compound Syrup
Sarsaparilla, three ounces. A
local druggist is the authority
that these simple, harmless in¬
gredients can be obtained at
nominal cost from our home
druggists.
The mixture is said to cleanse
and strengthen the clogged and
inactive Kidneys, overcoming
Backache, Bladder weakness
and Urinary trouble of all kinds,
if taken before the stage of
Bright’s disease.
Those who have tried this say
it positively overcomes pain in
the back, clears the urine of sed¬
iment and regulates urination,
especially at night, curing even
the worst forms of bladder weak¬
ness.
Every man or woman here who
feels that the kidneys are not
strong or acting in a healthy
manner should mix this prescrip¬
tion at home and give it a trial,
as it is said to do wonders for
many persons.
The Scranton (Pa.) Times was
first to print this remarkable
prescription, in October, of 1900,
since when all the leading news¬
papers of New York, Boston,
Philadelphia, Pittsburg and
other cities have made many an
nouncements of it to their
ers.

The Sulphuric acid plant in
with the
Copper Company is now running,
turning out crude sulphuric acid
with success, and promises to
prove a great manufacturing
concern a longside of the copper
company industry,
Thus the copper company is
turning smoke into money,
smoke which has been doing im¬
mense damage to vegetation in
North Georgia, especially m the
comities of Fannin, Gilmer and
Murray.
It will be recalled that the
state of Georgia put the Tennes¬
see Copper Company into a posi¬
tion where the copper company
had to suppress the damaging
fumes or quit business. The
costly sulphuric acid plant is the
means devised for saving the
Company from this disaster after
it had spent over a million of
dollars in getting ready to
produce copper.
The sulphuric acid is being
shipped in tanks to manufactur¬
ers of fertilizers.
The sulphuric acid plant has
been experimenting, going slow
on untread grounds, andean now
only be said to be a success.
It is stated on good authority
that the Tennessee Copper Com¬
pany is soon to begin the con¬
struction of another sulphuric
acid plant, the same to be an
exact reproduction of the one
now in operation.
It is stated that when this
second acid plant is complete
and in operation that the two
sulDhuric acid plants together
will consume the entire output
of the fumes from the Tennessee
Copper Company’s smelting
plant, and thus forever elimi¬
nate the smoke nuisance which
has proved so destructive to
vegetation in the surrounding
