The eleven district agricul¬
tural schools of Georgia have
used up the appropriations
for the first six months school
work, and unless the legisla¬
ture makes immediate appro¬
priation they will be unable to
reopen in the fall.
'The chances are that there
will be four or five candidates
in the field for congress two
years from now. Judge Fit?,
of Carters*ille, is being
spoken of, Judge Wright, of
Rome and Hon. W. C. Bunn,
of Cedartown, — Walker
County Messenger.
Were it not for Representa¬
tive George G, Glenn, of
Whitfield, the Georgia legis
lature would be a dry crowd
indeed. If there is any fun
coming George always finds
it first, but he is liberal with
it and divides with his fel
low lawmakers. *

Murray county was not the
only county in the throes of
in election last Wednesday;
vValker, Chattooga anq Ca¬
toosa counties were up against
the same proposition, and
only one county, Chattooga,
was able to change to no
fence, getting a majority of
near two hundred. Catoosa
went for fence by about t le
same majority as Chattooga
went for no fence, while
Walker went for fence by
over sixteen hundred majority .
Col. T. C. Milner has just
returned from Atlanta, where
he has been to learn the status
of the bill seeking to put the
solicitor general upon salaries.
He say's that he finds that at
the last session of the legisla¬
ture Mr. McMichael, of
Marion, introduced a bill to
change the fee system to that
of salaries, that the bill was
referred to the special ju¬
diciary committee and re¬
ported back favorably and
that the same is now on the
calendar and will be taken up
in its order for passage. Col.
Milner, true to his pledges to
the people, is doing all in his
power to procure the passage
if the companion bills chang¬
ing the fee system as respects
lie office of solicitor general
o that of salaries. -Carters

PROTECT OUR FISH AND GAME.
A recent editorial in the
columns ot The Journal urg¬
ing the necessity of passing
ippropriate legislation for the
protection of game and fish
tnd the creation, for that pur
jose, of a permanent game
;ommission, has struck a re
tponsive cord throughout the
state.
It has been estimated that
1 horde of not less than ten
thousand negro pot-hunters
*oam the woods and fields
from early September to late
in April every year, damag
■ ng crops which they should
be cultivating and carelessly
destroying thousands of dol
bus worth of property by set
ting the woods on fire.
In addition, non-residents in
large numbers invade the state
and destroy our game by
wholesale for the purpose of
sending it away to the north¬
ern markets.
The natural and inevitable
result of all this is that within
less than three years there
will practically be nothing
with fur and feathers in the
THE MURRAY NEWS, FRIDAY, JULY 10. 1908.
state ot Georgia for the real
sportsman to hunt, and these
reasons have inspired a few
public-spirited citizens to or¬
ganize themselves into the
Audubon society of the state
of Georgia for the purpose of
securing the establishment of
a permanent game commis¬
sion and the enactment of ad¬
equate laWs to meet existing
difficulties.
Such a law, drawn upon
the same lines as the Alabama
law, which has proven a con¬
spicuous success, has already
been introduced in the legis
lature and has passed its
second reading. In view of
the fact that so many fruitless
efforts have been made in the
past to secure such a law it is
earnestly hoped that better
results will crown the present
effort.
It would be impossible to
overestimate the extent of the
damage done every jear b)
the irresponsible pot hunters,
while, on the other hand, it
should be borne in mind that
the proposed commission, so
far from costing the state
anything, will, in all proba¬
bility, be an actual source of
revenue. The expenses ot
the commission are to be paid
out of the fund arising from
the fees for resident licenses
at one dollar each and non¬
resident licenses at fifteen
dollars each, together with
such fines and forfeitures as
may be imposed.
It has been shown that in
Alabama such a law brought
twenty thousand dollars into
the treasury the first year, of
which sixteen thousand dol¬
lars was left after paying all
expenses. v
It is easy to see that we
may expect the same result in
Georgia,
At present we certainly
have an unenviable distinc¬
tion, except Nevada, which
do< s practically nothing to
protect its fish and game.
The pot-hunter roams at will,
not only destroying fish and
game, but thousands of dol-
1 trs worth of crops.and other
property.
'The real sportsmen in the
state are a unit in their desire
that something should be done
to remedy this deplorable
condition, and the farmers
who are the principal suffer¬
ers are equally interested in
it.
The general assembly could
not do better than to push the
pending law to promp enact¬
ment.
Mr. John H. Wallace, Jr.,
game and fish warden of Ala
b.ima, has ki idly consented
t ) appear at any time and ad¬
dress the legislature on this
subject, and he would be able
to furnish some valuable in¬
formation. Whether we take
advantage of his kind offer or
not, we should do something
at once to protect the fish and
game of the state before they
are hopelessly destroyed.—
Atlanta Journal.
