THE MURRAY NEWS, FRIDAY, JULY 17. 1008.
BRYAN AND KERN-DEMOCRACY'S
LEADERS
With the nomination of
William Jennings Bryan, of
Nebraska, for president, and
John W. Kern, of Indiana,
for the vice presidency, De
mosracy has chosen its
standard-bearers, building tor
them a broad and patriotic
platform on which to stand
and fight.
The choice of Kern is per¬
haps a very wise one. He
has for many years been a
strong figure in middle
western politics. His public
record shows him to be a con¬
servative man, with force of
character and unimpeachable
integrity.
The choice of Judge Gray
would have probably
strengthened the ticket in the
East. There seems hardly a
doubt that the Delaware man
could have had the nomination
if he had desired it, but he
stated that he would under no
c reumstanee accept second
prime. Judge Gray and .Mr.
Bryan are both Democrats,
but of a different school. It
is doubtful if Judge Gray’s se¬
lection would have been a
wise one, as irreconcilable
differences in party principles
between him and the head of
the ticket might have brought
serious rupture in the midst of
the campaign,
Mr. Bryan and Mr. Kern
are in perfect harmony in
their viewpoint on Democratic
principles, and both stand
squarely and firm on the
platform. Indiana is un
doubtedly a doubtful state
now, and Kern’s nomination
will give the party an ex¬
cellent chance to carry the
state in November. lie will
a’so give strength to the ticket
through the tier of middle
western states, where signs
point to a large Democratic
drift.
With a vigorous campaign,
with all the. discordant ele¬
ments harmonized* with the
S nith showing an unbroken
front, as it will, notwithstand¬
ing talk about “breaking the
solid South,’’ with discontent
widespread over Republican
rule, Democracy shows a
stronger front than for many
years.
Organized labor is unques
tionably opposed to Taft, and
the strong anti-in junction
plank embodied in the plat¬
form will give labor every
reason for voting the Demo
era tic ticket this year. The
emphatic declaration for tariff
revision, the clarity on all im¬
portant questions of the day,
has made the platform one of
the soundest and strongest
the party has molded in
years.
It is a hard right ahead, but
if the faithful will buckle on
t’i«ir armor and go into the
fray with spirit and contfi
dence, the country will see a
Democratic president inaugu¬
rated on March 4, next.—At-
1 mta Georgian.
