Castro ran out just in time

Nobody knows Gomez, but
everyone is pleased to see him
succeed Castro.
That gurgling, purring

ing the days to March 4.
Having got the Keystone
of his Cabinet, the rest ought
to be easy to President-elect
Taft.
If divorces keep on increas
ing. the nation’s alimony bill
will rival its Panama Canal
expenses.
The Pungtown Debating
Society will discuss the ques¬
tion, “Is Christmas wort!’
the money.”
Why has not somebody ris¬
en to remark that the Taft
Cabinet won’t be able to re
sist Knox.
Mr. Pulitzer has gone to
Panama to see if he is as much
of a liar as he has been crack
ed up to be.
They arc pulling down Cas¬
tro statues and burning Cas¬
tro portraits in Venezuela.
This is a bad year for dicta¬
tors.
If Mr. Carnegie had talked
in 1892 as he does now, Mr.
Cleveland would have been
elected by a majority of about
5 , 000 , 000 .
Knox is not a large man
physically, but the Pennsyl¬
vania Legislature will have a
bard job in finding a Senator
big enough to fill his shoes.
“Grab your dollars when
you’re young,” advises Uncle
Andrew Carnegie. Then
when you are old you can let
the tariff twins do your work.
Sly Andrew Carnegie. He
didn’t want to testify at the
tariff hearings. The more he
declined the more his inquisit¬
ors insisted. How they wish
they had let him oil.
The difference between
hunting canvasback ducks
and Venezuelan ships of war
is that the canvasback is more
< ificult to bag, but worth
more when you get him.
President Roosevelt expects
to gain some distinction by
getting a white rhin»ceros in
Africa. On the other hand,
just think how distinguished
u white rhino would feel if it
gut a President.
The United States soldier
who retired with savings
amounting to $13,000 from
his pay should write a book.
His advise on how to put
aside a competence out of a
small income would be emi¬
nently practical.

question is whether the
of Venezuela in this case
will be Germany’s gain.
After all, perhaps, we have
made some progress in right
eousness. Those six honest
Councilrr.en out of 86 crooks
in Pittsburg would have made
work comparatively easy for
Diogenes, who was so long
looking for even one honest
man.
Men Who Fix Prices.
There are probably about ten
or twelve thousand Night Eiders
in the country, all told. Some
gay that the recent operations in
the cotton states are traceable to
men who have merely taken the
cue from the Kentucky tobacco
country; others that they have
been organized by traveling or¬
ganizers. The phrase “Night
Eider” itself first came into use
Home eight or nine years ago, at
the time of the toll-gate troubles
m Kentucky.
The people who are doing the
devilment in the tobaco districts
are of a very different class from
those who operated around Keel
foot Lake. The percentage of
toughs and plug-uglies in the to¬
baco district—fellows who would
seize upon the most trivial ex¬
cuse to make trouble—is much
smaller than around the lake.
It is freely asserted in Clarkes
ville, Term., that the leaders of
the tobacco association do not in
reality care very much whether
the tobacco trust ia put out of
existence or not but that the
rank and file of the association
are their dupes. Certainly the
tobacco trust has not been injur¬
ed to any great extent through¬
out the dark tobaco district. In
]906, May Bell, the association
was, in effect, reorganized and
turned into a kind of warehouse
corporat ion under the title of the
Planters’ Protective Association
of Kentucky, Tennessee and Vir¬
ginia; with a capital stock of
$200, divided into 200 shares of
$1 each; aud its affaire are coo
trolled by a board of directors,
consisting of forty-two members,
elected annually from among the
stock-holders. These forty-two
men thus have the power to fix
the price for which the crop of
tobacco shall be held ; all the as¬
sociation tobacco is sold through
them: they are the forty-two
kings of the tobacco situation.
In short, the farmers who grow
the tobacco do practically what
these forty-two directors tell
them to do: and 1 cannot for the
life of me figure out where it
would be to the advantage of
these forty-two men if the tobac¬
co trust went out of existance.—
