FAMOUS IX ARTIST
Mme. Tussaud Had an Exciting
and Dramatic Career.

{N FRENCH REVOLUTION.
During That Era of Bloodshed She
Modeled Some of the Heads That Fell
by the Guillotine and Was For a
Time In Prison Herself as a Suspect.
This is We story of Mme, Tussaud,
who was born In Borne in 37*10 and
died in London in 1850. and who. dur¬
ing the stormy time of the French rev¬
olution, modeled In wax some of the
heads that fell by (he guillotine.
Marie Gresholtz was the daughter of
nn aid-de-camp of General Mummer
in the Seven Years’ war. She tvus
born after the death of her father.
Her mother was the sister of Dr.
John Christopher Curtins of Herne
This Dr. Cimliw had made many
anatomical and other models in wax
and had attracted the attention of the
Prince do Conti. This nobleman urged
Curtins to come to i’aris and establish
himself as a modeler In wax.
The Curtins studio became the ren¬
dezvous of the fashionable worid. and
in connection with this he had a muse
urn of curiosities. Among his patrons
were Voltaire. Jean .lactpies. Rous¬
seau, MeSmer. Mirnbeau. Diderot, Ben¬
Franklin. Haul Jones and many
other notable persons.
In Ids visits to ids sister at Berne
Dr. Cui'tiits bad taught Ills niece, Marie.
many of the secrets of ......Ming in
wax. She showed such ability in this
that her uncle urged her root her to
niftUe a home with him In i’aris and to
allow him to adopt Marie as his ilaugh
ter.
Marie began earnest study with Dr
Curtins, and she was so skillful in
the modeling of wax flowers that this
art became a craze. Even the royal
personages in the palace took it up
and Marie spent smiie lime giving les¬
sons to .Mme. Elizabeth, the young sb,
ter of Louis N VI.
When tlx? revolution broke out Dr
Curfius took the side of the people and
.sent for Marie to come front the pal
ace. it was rather siugniar that two
of his wax models should have played
a foremost part in Hie opening Seelies
of that awful period, in his collet'
Moq of models was a bust of (he min
later. Neckcr, father of Mine, de iStuei,
and one of Philippe.. duke of Or
leans. Two days before the storming
of the Bastille a mob took these two
busts from bis museum hi the I'aiais
Royal, draped them ia black era c to
show their sympathy ami slatted to
parade the streets with these. *
As the procession tiled across the
Place Vemknne a troop of dragoons
stud one of the regiments charged. A
swurd stroke cut the bust of Meeker
in halves, ami the »miu who wits carry

Tiie soldiers made desperate efforts to
demolish it.
At the taking of the Bastille Dr. Cm
tiu« was active and for Ids services to
France was rewarded by the imtioiuit
assembly. A badge of honor was pre¬
sented to him. and this was inscribed
with the famous date and a memorial
of his bravery and patriotism, liis
house was a favorite place of meeting
with the leaders of the revolution, so
Marie hud an opportunity to see them
all.
There was only one time when Marie
was in any banger during this ties
pernio period. She was "suspected"
aud sent to prison. Here at the same
time was Mme. de Reauharuais, who
had barely escaped the guillotine and
who was later the Josephine of Napo¬
leon Bonaparte. Her nude was able
to gel Marie's release front prison, and
she came out In time to see the down

been called to model the heads- of

Marie Antoinette and of the Princess
Lamhaile, the queen's friend. When
the leaders suffered by the guillotine
in their turn she modeled their heads.
After the revolution her uncle died.
and in 1705 site married M. Tussaud.
She could not overcome the shock of
her experiences during the revolution,
aud site persuaded her husband to
take her aud the valuable collections
of wax models left her by Dr.-Curtius
over to England.
They established this collection ip
Hie Strand. The-collection was taken
al! about the couutry, and in 1S33 it
was brought hack to London and made
a permanent exhibition. Her sons con¬
ducted the business, and she took an
active share in this til! she was eighty
years of age.—Boston Giobe.
Naming Their Children.
It was a musical man who gave his
four daughters the following names:
Do-re. Mi-fa. So-la. Ti-do. The first
caped with the uiekuauie Dora, the
second answered Miffy. the third own¬
ed up to Soil.v. while the youngest
erally got Tiddy.
The case o£ the musical man is
matched by that of the
printer who named his children
the type fonts he used—Ruby, Pearl.
Diamond. The first two are uo
mon names for girls, only Ruby
pened to be a boy. He followed in
father's footsteps and afterward be
came a printer's manager In
