DALTON, GEORGIA.
THE MURRAY NEWS, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22, J909.
“BLOODY 7TH"
IN LIMELIGHT
If Gordon Lee Runs There Will
Be Lively Times in Old
North Georgia.
The expected has happened
di-wri in the ’Bloody Seventh’
congressional district of Georgia,
said a well known and generally
a well-credited observer from
that section at the Read House
to a Chattanooga News reporter.
“Mose Wright lsee has resign¬
ed from the Rome circuit bench
of the superior court and is to
make the race for congress. That
is the first regular announcement
but it is generally supposed that
Gordon Lee will be force to run
bv bis friends from all over the
thirteen counties composing the
Seventh.” Mack Johnson, of Bar¬
tow, and probably Judge Gus
Kite will no doubt shy their cas¬
tor into the ring and meet Mose
at L’hillipr when the time seems
in joint for them. Anyhow Mose
Wright has cut out a long cam¬
paign for himself. Predictions
are freely made as to whom Gov.
Brown will appoint to succeed
Mose on the bench. Some think
the appointee for this judicial
mine will be a friend of Mose,
hut in my judgment Gov. Brown
will offer to John W. Maddox,
who resigned from that same
bench to run for congress about
eighteen years ago, and served
three terms in congress and was
succeeded by Gordon Lee. Judge
Maddox has since been mayor of
Rome. He - is a man npe in law
and learning and his years of
public life sit lightly on his
shoulders. If he does not want
vo take oil the cares of the bench
again I venture that Wesley
Shropshire, of Chattooga county
will be tendered it. Both Mad¬
dox and Shropshire are friends
of Gordon Lee. Should Mack
Johnson run for congress the
Rome Tribune is understood to
be for him as against Mose
Wright, this esteemed fellow
townsman. At all events the sit¬
uation is interesting. Wright is a
clean man—no better in the dist¬
rict-^ fine speaker, loveable fel¬
low, learned in the law, large
family connection and is going
to be felt on the stump. Mack
Johnson is not really so well
known but is a splendid man
and successful farmer and man of
affairs. Gordon Lee Knows every
man, woman and child in the
district and never fails to go
and sees them and get mighty
close to them. He makes very
few speeches.-‘rather gum-shoes’
it, and raav be relied upon to
win many a vote. The people
and papers seem to demand his
return to congress. If Gus Fite
runs and meets Mose Wright on
the stump there’s going to be
some pyrotechnics if not some
class to the race next year. If
the average North Georgian likes
one thing above another, it’s a
‘jint ’spute,’ for they leave the
plow and the pulpit to be ‘among
those present.’ Gordon Lee has
secured appropriations for his
district which amounts to some¬
thing over $4,000 a day for every
day he has been in congress and it
is going to tell mightily for him.
Jt is due to him to say he has not
yet announced. Twenty out of
twenty-three newspapers in his
district are demanding his return
to congress.—Chattanooga News.
