EASTER LOVE.
Ancient and Modern Observances
of the Day.
A Curious Custom Which Pre¬
vails in Paris.
Easter is much older than Christian¬
ity. The very name by which we
know the day is identical with that of
the ancient Saxon goddess of spring,
Easter or Eostrc. The Anglo-Saxon
name for April is Easter month. Tak¬
ing advantage of the coincidence of
the Christian festival in point of time
with that of the yearly feast in honor
of the Saxon goddess, the early mis¬
sionaries gave a Christian meaning to
the observance of the day, but it has
ever retained its ancient name. Easter
was one time called the Christian
passover, becuuse the Jewish passover
occurrs about the same date, and early
converts from Judaism celebrated
Easter ami the passover as one fes¬
tival.
“The primitive Christians,” we are
told, “when they met on this day,
saluted each other with the words,
‘Christ is arisen,’ to which answer
was made, •Christ is arisen indeed,
aud hath appeared unto Simou. i v
This custom is still observed iu the
Greek church.
“Indeed,” to quote a foreign writer,
“all the ceremonies attending the ob¬
servance of Easter were at first ex¬
ceedingly simple; but in the early
part of the fourth century a decided
change was brought about. Constan¬
tine, naturally vain aud fond of pa¬
rade, signalized his love of display by
celebrating this festival with extra¬
ordinary pomp. Vigiis, or night
watches, were instituted for Easter
Eve, at which the people remained in
the churches until midnight. The
tapers which it was customary to burn
at this time did not satisfy Ilis Ma¬
jesty, but huge pillars of wax were
used instead, and not only in the
churches, but all over the city, were
they placed so that their brilliancy at
night should far exceed the light of
day. Easter Sunday was obscived
with most elaborate ceremonials, the
Pope officiating at mass, with every
imposing accessory that could be de¬
vised.”
Not kneeling in token of humility,
but standing erect with arms out¬
stretched and faces looking to heaven,
to express triumphant peace, the early
Christians prayed during the fifty
days between Easter and the Pente¬
cost, and no songs but those of joy
and gratitude were heard. Between
Easter and Pentecost the time was
considered the most auspicious in the
whole year for love-making and mar¬
riages, and those two holy days were
the best ou which to baptize child¬
ren.
Of all the Easter customs, that of
coloring and making presents of eggs
seems the only distinctive one that has
found a place in our time and coun
try.
On the first day of Easter week iu
Paris, everybody presents every one
else with a present emblematical of an
egg, which is known as a Paschal egg
(oeufs dcs Paqnc.) Among a people
so ingenious as the Parisians, an
opportunity of this sort is literally a
“God-send.” Egg-shaped articles are
to he had of all conceivable, and some
inconceivable, forms and materials.
One would think the once imperial
eagle of France had summoned all the
bu ds of the air to come to Paris, build
their nests iu shop windows, and there
deposit their eggs; for, go where you
will, you will see eggs, from the size
of a caraway comfit, such as is found
iu the nest of the humming-bird, to
one as large as a bowl, or an ostrich’s
or emu’s egg.
The shops are full of egg-shaped
boxes, the receptacles of candy, jew¬
elry or toys. Here you have choco¬
late eggs full of cream where tho yolk
should be, and again, ivory eggs,
within which is a sccnt-bottle. Pass
ing along are women with barrows,
crying, “Les oeufs, des oeufs.” Upon
their barrows are piied in separate
heaps, white and colored eggs.
Some of the ncsls are beautiful
works of art. Here is a stoat or wea¬
sel stealthily climbing up a tree to
suck the eggs, while the parent bird is
represented with her feathers ruffled
iu a threatening attitude, to drive

away the intruder. Here, again, a
euckoo—a European cuckoo, our Amer¬
ican bird is above such tricks—lias
turned out a little chaffinch egg which
lies broken ou the ground below,
while she has left her own for a fos¬
ter-parent to hatch.
Moro charming, however, and much
mo.ie interesting, are those little gifts
which are uot only reminders of the
day and expressions of friendship,
but that carry with them something
of the personal taste and individuality
of the donor. It may well bo a pleas¬
ure, iu addition to its reception, to
know whose busy brain planned your
gift, and whose dainty lingers lin¬
gered over it long aud lovingly.—
fDemorest,
No More Objections Were Made.
A laughable story is told about town
concerning A. II. Hummel, the crimi¬
nal and theatrical lawyer. Every one
knows Hint Mr. Ilummel is uot above
the average stature of man (physical
stature), aud every one who has scon
him iu court knows how quickly ami
often he can jump up to make objec¬
tions when he thinks them necessary.
It seems that ho came in collision a
little while ago with ex-Judge Ditten
lioefer, who was in an objecting mood,
and he was greatly irritated by the
latter’s deliberate methods. Appeal¬
ing finally to the court, he said:
“Your honor, it is not the gontle
man’s objections that I make excep
tion to, but it takes him so long to get
up aud sit down.”
Mr. Dittenhoofer slowly arose and
replied as follows:
“Your honor, I possess a good deal
of avoirdupois, and it requires some
exertion for me to move. I am not
like my little friond there (pointing to
Ilummel), who has only to slide out
of iiis chair to find himself on his
feet.”
It is said that Mr, Hummel made no
more objections.—[New York Trib¬

Net His Own Cook.
There is a funny story told in tho
senate of a mistake made by a mem
her of that body at the time of Gen.
Anson McCook’s marriage some half
dozen years ago. Senator Dolf un
dertook to get up a subscription for a
suitable wedding present, and, offer¬
ing the paper to one of bis colleagues
who was somowhat deaf, explained
the case and asked for what amount
he might put his name down in tho
list. The senator from Oregon was
somewhat nonplused aud considerably
nettled to meet with a point-blauk re¬
fusal. The affair was the more inex
plicabie as the senator of whom the
contribution was desired was known
to be a warm personal friend of Gen.
McCook. Later in the day the situ¬
ation was unconsciously explained by
the offending senator, who remarked
to a group of liis friends: “What tho
deuce do you suppose Dolpk means?
Ho came to me today, and after tell¬
ing me that his cook was going to be
married, actually asked me to contri¬
bute for a wedding present.”—[Kato
Field’s Washington,
Signalling Through Water.
The intellectual resources of Wiz¬
ard Edison show no signs of exhaus¬
tion. His latest move is for a new
and rather startling system of sub¬
marine signalling. Il e believes that
the difficulties in the way of such a
system are quite, surmountable. The
principle on which the proposed in¬
vention rests is the fact that water is
one of the best media for the trans¬
mission of vibrations—that is the con
veyance of sound. Vessels are to have
a vibratory machine under water,
which will at once register the
signal sounds from any vessel which
may be iu the vicinity. The appara¬
tus will be capable of detecting the
presence of a ship provided with sig¬
nals at a distance of from ten to fifteen
miles. It is believed that such an in¬
vention would reduce the danger of
collison at sea to a minimum, and
with the removal of this last danger,
voyages would he as safe as human in
genuity could make them.—[New

Iu 1884 there were 1117 soldiers in
English prisons; in 1891 there were
433, and on Dec. 31 last there were
but 4. Last year not one soldier was
sentenced to penal servitude. The
expulsions for misemduct have de¬
creased since 1888 from 2020 to 1390.

A Woman’s Wito
Dr. Adler tells a good story about a
verbal sparring match between the Em
peror Hadrian and a rabbi. Said the
Emperor: ‘ 1 Why, your God is represented
as sleep a thief, for ho surprised Adam in his
and robbed him of one of bis ribs.”
The rabbi’s daughter craved permission
to reply and when her request was
granted she said: “Let me implore thine
imperial protection. A great outrage
has been inflicted upon us.” “What has
happened?” asked the Emperor. She
answered, “In the darkness of the night
an audacious thief broke into our house.
He took a silver flagon from our chest
of plate and left a golden one in its
place." “Would that such a robber
would visit my palace every day!” said
Hadrian. “And was not tho Creator
such a thief as this?” retorted the girl,
“for he stole from Adam a rib, and in
lieu thereof gave unto him a living,
lovely wife?”
Tiie accounts ox iiic depredations ol
wolves in portions of Russia, are appear¬
ing almost daily. In a village near Arch¬
angel a peasant, who was sleeping on top
of the oven, as is the custom, was
awakened by feeling a sudden pain in
his foot. He sprang up in time to leave
four of his toes in the jaw of an immense
wolf, which had just prepared itself for
a comfortable meal. With a howl the
man sprang down to the floor, The
wolf sprang on his back. With a great
effort the peasant succeeded in shaking
him off for an instant, and seizing a con¬
venient axe soon dispatched the animal.
It had entered through a window in the
outside room of the hut, near which a
candle was burning—a very unusual
thing for a wolf to do, as they fear a
light hunger more than anything else. The
must be terrific indited which
can allay this fear.
