SATURDAY, SEP. 2 , 1 ** 13 .
No, wa don't want that filthy, paltry,
insignificant one, two or three dollars,
you owe im for this paper which we
have been sending out to you every
week for the hst one, two, or three
years, which if we fail to get to you on
time caused yon to cuss us, scotil your
wife, thrash the baby, kick the dog
out of the bouse and throw the skillet
of meat in the fire Yes, we can live a
little longer on wind arid promises, but
one day before long you will he brought
to grist when you hear of our death
from destitution and want. After that
you can never lie down on your d'wny
straw-bed with an unsmitten con
scienee. Ever afterwards in your fits
of delirium tremens you won’t he both¬
ered with visions of the slimy serpent
but our beautiful, our smiling, long-suff¬
ering and benignant visage will flit be¬
fore your befuddled mind. Then you
will be sorry you lavished such treat¬
ment upon us. No, thank you, we can
lug our book to the Beautiful Gate and
show your account to good old St.
Peter if you are willing for us to do so.
Yes, you can settle with him if you
want to.

Trox Bankston comes out with a mi¬
nute report of Toni Watson’s speech at
Dalton last week. Trox is hard to down.
Montgomery Folsom is soliciting
contributions to build it home for those
bards who sc k ill t Muse in vain. Hero
is our $.25.
The people up this way rely, implic¬
itly, on the political predictions of the
Atlanta Journal, and all other news as
for that matter.
Tlia 1 speech John Maddox made in
Congress last week in favor ot free coin¬
age stands unsurpassed for sound sense
and unshaken loyalty to his constitu¬
ents. M addox is today the best mem¬
ber in the Georgia delegation.
Out of « voting population of over
* 1,800 men the jury revisors of Murray
county think only ISO are sufficiently
upright), honest and intelligent to serve
in the courts as ns G rand Jurors, Our
citizens must be an ignorant lot.
The Georgia legislature meets the
fourth Wednesday iu October, There
is some talk of the possibility that that
•body will pass a law “staying” all debts
for a period of twelve months and we
are right, here to state that whenever
■they take such action every chump in
the state who don’t want to pay his
subscription will have things his own
way and the poor editor will he left up¬
on the mercies ot the cold. cold world.
The purchasing clause of the Sher¬
man silver law was repealed last Mon¬
day by Congress. However, this in no
way impairs (lie legal tender qualities
of the silver money now in circulation.
The congress has by this action carried
out so much of the democratic pledges
made to the people last summer, and if
they arc only given time for intelligent
action every iniquitous piece of repub¬
lican legislation will be wiped from tiie
statute books.
The next legislature should see that
the law regulating "strikes” in capital
and tV.ouy cows is changed. As it now
stands the State’s attorney is allowed
only ten “strikes” while the counsel
for the defense is allowed twenty, there¬
by giving the criminals of our state all
the advantage in the selection of jurors
and the result is that in nine cases out
of ten the juries nre “packed” bv law¬
yers representing the accused while
the pi osecuter is compelled to sit by
and see his case go down. Give both
sides an equal chance and let justice be
rightly administered.
GU.VX 1> WRY I’KHSESTSIESiTS.
Georgia, Murray County,
We, the Grand Jury, selected,
chosen and sworn for the August
Term of the superior court of Mur
ray county for the year 1893, beg
leave to make the following gen
eral presentments:
We have examined through va
rious committees, the
buildiugs, books of record, and
other public property and find
them as follows:
We find the paupers, six in
number, on pauper farm, reasona¬
bly well cared for, except they
need some more clothing, that the
mules on said farm are in jioor
condition; but the cows and calves
4 iu all are in good order--that
the tools, buildings &e. are in a
dilapidated condition.
We find the jail in excellent
condition, neat and cleaD, that the
books of the sheriff and jailer are
neatly and correctly kept, but that
(he sewer pipe needs some repairs.
We find that the ja»ler‘s house
leaks all around next the wall,
and recommend that the same be
repaired; and furthermore fbat a
pump be placed in tie well that
water may be pumped into the
We find the court bouse in good
condition except in the vault of
the ordinary‘s office some ot (he
locks to the drawers need repair¬
ing and recommend that th“ work
be done at once. Also that, the
Solicitor Generla's desk be inclos¬
ed with suitable material to pre
vent intrusion,
We recommend book of record of
administration be rebound.
We further find the old jail
property and house known as the
Staples corner are in a dilapidate
ed condition and recommend that
tbo same be sold and the proceeds
be applied to the placing of a sub¬
stantial iron fence around the court
house yard, or as much thereof as
may be necessary to complete the
same.
We find the tax receiver's and
commissioners’of roads and revo
tines books neatly and correctly
kppi. Also the clerk's and ordi¬
nary's books are neatly kept, prop¬
erly indexed and conveniently ar¬
ranged.
We find some of the public
roads well worked, some in pass¬
able, and some in bad condition.
We therefore recommend that all
the road commissioners have the
overviers, as early as practicable,
i:> weak the roads as the law di¬
rects, end that the,, ditches and
drains be cleared ol mud and
leaves about the 1 st of December,
that the roads may not ho dam¬
aged by the winter rains.
Wo hud the tax collector's book
and papers in considerable disor¬
der—that the county tax levied
lor the fiscal year ending February
28t,h, 1893 to be
Tax collected over and above Tax Col¬
lector's and Tax Receiver’s commis¬
sions. $0761.98.
Tax Receiver’s commission, $126.93.
Tax Collector’s com mission, $243.21.
Insolvent general tax, $27.25.
Defaulters relieved, $.39.62.
Errors in digest, $58.01.
Balance uncollected, $444.01.
Wo find that the Treasurer's
books shows that he lms properly
audited the accounts, warrants and
moneys of the county—that ho has
received of tho T. (J. since the
February Term of court 1893,
$3001.90.
Paid out on vouchers properly,
signed, $3054.01.
Wc. find the dockets of the jute
tact a of the peace and notary's
public correctly kept except some
of thorn have used pencil in writ¬
ing vihere they should have used,
and we recommend that they do
use pen and ink in the future.
Wo learn from statement of (J.
S. O. that the public schools are
in flourishing condition—that the
educational interests are advanc¬
ing nobly, that the teachers aims
arc well directed and that, in the
main, they are entetprisipg and en¬
ergetic.
We recommend that the proper
authorities rent, out the court house
rooms, unoccupied by ftio county
officers, that the rents be properly
collected and a complete record
be kept of the same, and further
that no one be allowed to occupy
them free of charge.
We recommend David E. Hum¬
phreys to fill the vacancy existing
in the county board of education
Wo recommend Lorenzo M.
Douthitt Jr., for tiie office of nota¬
ry public and justice of the peace
for the 1506 Dist. G. M.
We recommend the appointment
of William IV Tyson foi N. P. and

He has issued a neat litt le circu¬

It looks now as though the rail¬
roads bad determined to maintain
the rates as named, and will have a
war of schedules instead of a war
of rates. Mr. Harman says that
this is the best way to accommo¬

quick and reliable schedules and
allowing the roads to receive a liv¬
