Tbo jury -elired about Revcn o’

yesterday morning returned ft ver

inendutienj to the mercy of the
court.
The attorneys ;for the prisoner
will make a motion for a new trial
on grounds relating to ihe evidence.
It is currently stated that the
,
jury, when itjrotired, ;discar,led the
evidence of Ben Mauldin and Ed
King, two ol ihoj^delensu’s ciiaif
witnesses, and that the first poll
showed Jtfiree lor voluntary man

reached as a compr mise verdict.
The c ms, nsus of opinion on
streets yesterday wa* that the ver¬

for the couocii for defense.
Toe sympathy of the entire coni'
manitv goes out. to the leklives
of the prisoner, and universal sor¬
row is expressed over t he misfort¬

In this sympathy The Argus sin¬

The Umale relatives of both the
deceased and prisoner were pres¬

We think, with due defiereuce

* As to the evidence of Mauldin
and King, we have been inlorme
by one ol liie attorneys in the case
that a number of Ihe jury told
fiim lhut. the testimony of thes,
two witnesses was not discar led- -
in (act the evidence of no witness
was set aside.
It has also been reported that
that Hie verdict of ‘’guilty with a
recommendation” wae cone*led to
lie a vidlorv for the defense,
do r>nt know lias opinion of the peo
yle of Whitfield county but do
know that the attorneys for the de¬
fense did not consider the verdict
a victory, or anything like it.
Having talked Mtb some of (he
leading citiz ns of Whitfield’conn
ty and hearing them express the
opinion (oat tne jury would make
a verdict of "manslaughter, ’ and
nothing else, we no fi >t consider it
a vidtory lor any but the prosecu¬
ting attorney—We have heard
numbers ot others express the
same Oelief,
We simply state these facts in
justice due tlie defendant and his
immediate family aud friends as
we see it. It is not our intention
or province to i effect on the court
or lee jury or, on lact, anyone.
But we do think Solicitor Fits did
wrong in injecting Murray kaklnx
in tho trial. In the examination
of Trevitt Mr Fite, in referenci to
contradictory statements made bv
Trevitt in Spring l'lace, hsstd
Trey lit il ha did not.- ‘ know h«,
[Ikevitt.] was in Murray county
where he was doing that talking ”
We cannot believe that Mr Fite
realized the groat, hurt this reflect¬
ion would do Murray comity. It is
a faet, ot which tee Ramsey family
should be proud, that they have
many strong, frienps in this coun
ty count p, bur, the Ramseys are
too brave and honorable to stoop
to ihe use of kuklux or any other
organization in the furtherance of
their own personal interests. We
do do hope and trust tnat Mr. Fite
may be abut to amend this hasty
refle.-tion upon jho law-abiding
citizens of this county.
Murray county is filled np with
good people and these people
would be far Irom interfering with
the end* of justice, law and good
order.
