As a citizen.of Murrey county we de¬
sire to resent and refute the many
charges of kn klux ing and Other law¬
lessness fail upon tho entire people of
the couutv.
It is a well know fact throughout the
State that almost every outrage or
other act committed by- this gentry is
charged up as being from Murray
county.
In the Atlanta Constitution of recent
data a lengthy notice is? given of, the
murder of Henry Worley and in that,
notice it is asserted that Worley w*a <t
citizen of this .county and that the
murder was done in this county bv kn
kiux. It also charges that the “very
hilla and vslies of this county is swarm
iug with desperadoes,’’
The truth of the matter is thst Wor¬
ley was a citizen o( Gihuer county and
was killed in that county and that the
assertion that any of ‘‘Murrry’s hills and
vallies ara swarmed with desperadoes”
inn bold, had lie of the hugest, dirtnn
sion* and such vile statements can on 1 v
come from a dwarfed and polluted,
prejudiced and liquor-soaked brain.
This is not the first instance in which
these vile i no priest! ons have been
heaped iipon our citizens and the people
of this e unty feel outraged being thus
victsmized by un mrulmlous persons
who have no earthly regard for truth or
justice.
W# do not make a shadow of ah at¬
tempt to .'deny that this county has an
organized hand of ku klux in it, hut ev¬
erybody who has a speck of knowledge
about the matter knows that the coun¬
ties on all sides of Murray have or¬
ganized bands of the same gentry in
them. These things feeing true it is
but just tee that our sister counties
should share in the honors (?) and
should quit packing it all o(Ton Murray.
We make mention ol'these facts, not
to the disparagement of any county or
section, but that strangers may know
that our citizens are not guilty of all of
of which stand
It is to the interest of the other coun¬
ties to disclaim any knowledge of kn
klux other than those in Murray, hut at
the same time it is to thejgrent heart of
our county and every citizen in it,
Murray county is the home and
nativity of as good people as the South
affords, and we have as few had charac¬
ters as any county in the State accord¬
ing to population. Our officers enforce
the laws as strictly as do the officials
of any county and 1 our citizens violate
it. as little as do the people of any .sec¬
tion.
It is not ourfiintention to'justify the
existence of* an organized mob in this
or any other county, hut to vindicate
Murray county from the many vile im¬
precations under which she has been
reeling for so long, and that •without
visible lesentment. It. has been cus¬
tomary of late years that whenever any¬
thing was done hv the kn klux in the
counties contiguous to this same little
thick-skulled, hair-brained fake, rushed
to the wires and spread the news abroad
that “Murray did it.”
This thing has grown painfully mo¬
notonous. Please let up on it.
We are both frank and proud to state
that our people are loud in their con¬
demnation of the Worley murder and
in all other similar outrages.
In another issue of the Atlanta dai¬
lies we notice that "Bob Hooker, who
was whipsd by the kuktux at his home
in Murray county was so badly beaten
that he wss unable to walk and had to
he carried to Atlanta streched out on a
mattress to prosecute the cases.”
This is an untruth.
Bob Hooeer was whipped hut not so
severely as all that. He was able to
walk the next day and to he ont all
night trying to capture the beardless
boys against whom he has sworn out
wsraants. Hooker’s father says Hie
kuklux didn’t give Bob more than he
needed.
We also notice a very silly parograph
in reference to the alleged oath of the
ku klux, which Hooker claims he found
with a number of the names of the
wiit.en on it, Here is what Hooker
says he found and claims to be the oath
of the ku klux:
Ol'Il OATH.
By All Hie Erth and Bind in Our
Vanes Wee Wilt Swar dam Ives By Alj
the mot hers that created us and the
God .hat created ns vve will stick to eoh
other till deth.
Now auy man w ith ordinary intelli¬
gence knows the above is a lake of the
tt'rst water. Aing Having seen Hookers wri¬
ting and acquainted wilh his
spelling and use of capital* it is our
honest and cauded opinion that lie
wrote this thing himself. A number of
our best citizens express the same o
pinion and one of the U. 8. officials
told us he believed 1 his to he a fact.
Na on# believes that the boy* Hoo¬
ke • has made affidavits against were in
the crowd hat whipped hiui; they are
too young.
As to Hooker himself he is. or wts, a
dr mkei) preacoer who’ some time ago
collected a lot of money for the purpose
of building a church or some similar
purpose ar.d appropriated the money iO

ness when we say that in our opinion
| at least Live Hi NOttEn of the heat citi
j zeit* in this comity would make oath
j that they,would not believe Hooker up¬
on ealh. lie is notoriously unreliable
i Hitd untruth till, and knows no more a
Imut who whipped him than a man on
t he other side of the globe,
.Such characters are tne men who
base given Murray the had name she
does not merit.
Don’t believe a word they say.

Catitebsville, Ga., April 24th. ’94.
Editor Junplecute:—I am some*
what surprised at the concluding
part ol yuir editorial, of first vvtek,
on “I he Jtanif-ey trial/’ I did ask
the witness, Louis 'irevitt rf he did
not know that lie was in Murray
county and among Uie talking en¬
quired about, but I am at loss to
know liow any good citizen of
Murray county could be offended
at this, or how it eouid hart the
county. I revilt was trying to lo¬
cale Kamaev, and being iu Ihe
vicinity of Rinjsey’fl home and
among his.friends, it was the most
prudent and natural Ihjpg for him,
in »rd«r to suieeed, tp say that he
woe Ramsey’s lijtfiid and knew
nothing about tire killing and that
public upiui at was wilh Ramsey!
This la t I was trying to impress
upon th - minds of the jury when I
asked the question. I know that
some of tlie lawyers for the de¬
fense tried to make a mountain out
of a mole-hill, and got up a side
issue and divert the minds of the
jury troin the real issue in the case,
but to no purpose. lain sorry that
tire usually level headed editor of
the Jimplecutv Ims 1 llowed the
ignis fatnas of counsel into such
error, but I know lie will return as
he gets out ol the marshes.
In the conduct of the Ramsey
case I did nothing, and Said noth¬
ing to intentionally hurt or wound
the feelings of any one, but if in
the faithful discharge of duty I
have offended any one I have no
apology to make. In conclusion
let me say that I am very sorry in¬
deed for lionert Ramsey, ami thal
his father and mother and brothers
and sisters apd 1ns other relatives
have m.y profound sympathy.
Very Respectfully Yours,
A. VV. FlTK.
