The young men and the old men all
did good work here for General Evans
last Saturday. The hoys just couldn't
lielp working for the old commoner.
Her majesty, Queen Victoria, was
seventy-five years old Thursday. 8h«

many'.more years to rule over England.
Dave Oavendar, who murdered Roll

was acquitted in Chattanooga last week.
Judge Lynch sometimes acts wisely but
not too often.
Judge James K. Hines, of Atlanta, is
tho populistic ['candidate for governor.
It is needless to state that the Judge
will need the sympathy of all his friends
about the first week in October.
Tho senate ia still hammering along.
The people remain in anxiety as to the
fate of the tariff bill. Let the senate

The initial number of ttm Calhoun
Times,by J. O. Middleton,is on our table.
It is a new venture in Calhoun and if
avowed democracy goes for anything it
is sure to get theta in great shape.
Tho Gordon Citizen pursues the even
tenor of its wav and is improving in ap¬
pearance each issue. It, has a master’#
hand at the helm and editor Taylor
knows nothing but progressivenose and
ultimate success .
Judge 8a,n Harris declined to accept
tlie appointment of Secretary of State
and Hon. Allen I). Candler, of the

Judge Sampson W, Harris has been
appointed secretary of state by the
governor to fill tlie vacancy caused by
the dentil of Hon. Phillip Oook. He

for a number o[ years and is an excel¬
lent gentleman,
Gen. Phillip Cook, Secretary of State,

this week. He had held that high office
for a number of years and tilled it well.
At the time of Ida death lie was receiv¬

which had acted.
Oongrvssman dates, of Alabama

in that state on the 22d, inst., over his
competitor, Captain Johnson. This
fact will he quite pleasing to all rock
ribbed democrats, as Oates was an out¬
spoken admistration candidate. Tho
Cleveland democrats will always get
there when the sore-heads don’t fuse
with other parties.
The fight between Evans and Atkin

waxes fast and furious. Atkinson lias
a well organized ring to help him, com

.Evans is a dignitied Christian minister,
who does not have the bad grace to go
padding his virtue over the State
Consequently the common people are
with him, while the politician# are for

The past week lias been one for At

A crew of professional witnesses in
the U..$. court at Atlanta have been
plying thair trade of late to the hurt of
a number of our best citizens and there
seems to be no remedy for it. It is not
the intent, of this great government of
ours that such unmitigated pukes as
these should he kept with fat pocket
hooks by such dishonest means. The
revenue law as it is enforced in North
Guargia is the veriest force and howling
disgrace to any government of freemen.
The people should petition Hon. 4. \V.
Maddox to intercede t with the author¬
ities at Washington and hare govern¬

and expose the nefarious condition of
our system.
AMONG THE CHEATER*.
J . A. Hall, of the Rome Tribu p, re¬

folks.
In speaking of bis visit Mr. Hall said :

the world will tiie traveler find things
so different from what they are at home
If the American who visits Mexico will
keep his eyes open he will learn much
that is worth knowing and his opinion
