Dspnty Marshals Wright and Maul
din of Dalton, and Sheriff Carter, Mur
ray, cam. to Atlanta yesterday to make
some arrangement, for the arre.t of the
white cap. who made the .tuck upon
Roper last Monday.
Their account of tba deed and the atiff
•ring of the unfortunate victim allows it
te be ena o. the moat atrocious and
palling crime, ever perpetrate.! in the
state. Yesterday morning as soon as
thedeUils of ti|e affair pecame knwon
the excitement in ravenue circle* W8H
intense. A posse of deputies was orga
nised and sent up on the afterneon train
They arrived in Dalton last night and
went out at once to the scene of attack.
All of the Deputy is well armed and de¬
termined to exert every effort to cap¬
ture the dtsperadoes.
There were «*uly five men in the gang,
but as to whather they were recognized
by Roper there is a difference in opin¬
ion. When first found ha stated that
just before a asting him in the shaft his
asaaiiaata doffed their disguises, think¬
ing that ha would not live to fell the tale
and that he plainly recognie»d;;each of
them. To Deputy Marshal Tom Wright
who went over to See him .Sunday after¬
noon, hajsaid that the men kept their
masks on all the time and that he had
no idea who they were, It ia thought
by some that Roper know* who the
uien ere but, although in a dying condi.
tiou. is afraid to give.tbeir names.
Koper was found lata Saturday after¬
noon and since then has steadily grown
weaker. Ho is not expected to live but
ae yet baa made no statement implica¬
ting any one. The Deputy Marshals
think, however, that >hen ^assured of
protection be will make a statement a
bout the whole affair.
Said one of the men who had seen
Roper yesterday: “I never knew a
more daatardls deee, although I have
lived in the hot-bed of the white eaps
for thirty years, and 1 never saw a more
horrible aigot than the 1 Kiddy of Will

man about tweuty-one or twenty-two
years old and has been living in Murray
all his life Souio time ago there was
a mooostv ne case before Commissioner
liamittoi. of Dalton, and ho was called
upon tot 'Stify. Hla evidence was a

warning was sent him th*)

telling him to leave th once

five men culled at his house and ordered
him out. Aa soon ae they get him out

him oa a mule and started out (or Co
hulls Mountain. This ia rhe most des¬
olate place iu ttoso regions. On one
aide of the mountain a number ef neep
pita have been dug at different times by
men whe were prospecting for copper
veins. Itwasatoneof these pits that
the gang halted with Roper. After ma¬
king him pray ana sing they began to
whip him. ‘‘Facii man took bin turn
and by the time the fifth men had fin¬
ished Ropers back was a mass of bleed¬
ing tlesli. lie was lying on the ground
with ilia bands tied, exhausted, bleedr
ing in a hundred d’fferent places and
almost dead.
Then they went off a little distance
from hiut and sack one tried his mark
mansbip at Ropers prostrate form,
five shots weie fired, but oulv three
struck him. One bullet lodged in hit
head, another shattered his arm and the
third grazed hie leg.
All of them thought he was dead and
they cast him into the pit. which is a
hout sixty feet deep, l'here he remain¬
ed from Monday night until Saturday
afternoon, when one of the fanners of
the neighborhood passing by heard his
X tana and pulled him out. Roper re
gaiaed consciousness the next day, and
from that time until taken eut he has
never slept a wink. If it had not bean
foi a little giasB which was glowing at
the bottom of tlis pit. and an old log,
which had fallsn down there’ he would
have never lived. The log was rotten
and a little moisture had soaked ia it.
This quenched Ins t.iirst to some ex¬
tent. Roper ia very weak and 1 don’t
think that ho can live.
