TO THE PUBLIC.
As to how well or badly the
Jail has beet) kept in tiie past,
and is now kept, I leave tiie
public to draw its own conclu¬
sions. The recent grand jury
was the fourteenth one that
has examined the Jail while in
my keeping, [and bever.vl times
by the whole bod)’’, at my re¬
quest,] and this is the first un
favorable report made as to its
cleanliness, or otherwise. I
console myself with the tact
that there are hundreds ot peo¬
ple both in and out of the
county who know that the re¬
port is not in Harmony with
the honest facts, for it is almost
a daily matter that citizens and
non-residents visit the Jail—
people who are familiar with
the manner in tvluch other jails
are kept—and they nearly all
say, “This is the cleauest : ml I
ever saw.” Not only this, but
I leave it to all who have ever
been confined in other jails, for
they invariably say, ‘1 don’t
mind staying in here; you keep
it clean.”
But there is, “always a
wheel within a wheel” and a
reason for such reports as this
from a committee, whether or
not they are backed up by any
rightful or just facts.
All who have been at the
jail since the report say, almost,
to a unit, “why, I do not see
anything wrong with this jail;
it’s the cleanest one I was ever
in.”
As a matter of fact there
has been a very grave injustice
done me, but I console myself
with a full knowledge of the
tact that there ase hundreds ot
people—good and houoiable.
people—who know it as well
as I do, for I never primp up
the jail for the benefit ot the
committees iroin the grand ju¬
ries, but as they see it just so
is it kept at all times--in geod
order—as tbirteeu, out of four¬
teen, grand juries have found
it. Very Respectfully.
S. B. Carter, Jailer.
COMMUNICATED.
Th* most enjoyable event of the
season occurred at the home of G.
G. Adams in thifs county on the
10th, insl,, the occaaion being- a
reunion of a remaining few of Co.
"O”, of the 11th Georgia Regi¬
ment, together with a birthday an*
niyersary of the host. The combi¬
nation of both events was highly
pleasing to ad present, especially
so to bis old comrades of the six¬
ties. Tiie weather was fine and all
nature seemed to lend a charaa to
the pleasures of the day. Hi issu¬
ing invitations Mr. Adams kindly
remembered Mrs. Luffman, wife of
the lamented and brave Col., and
no pains were spared to assure her
ol the big esteem and veneration
in which her husband was still
held by each remaining member of
the old company. Cci. Lutlman
organized the company at the be¬
ginning of the war, and as their
superior officer held then love and
loyalty through those dark and
uncertain days. Although sixty
two years of age, Mr. Adams seems
oblivious to the, and throughout
that day was “one of the boys”,
loo much cannot be said of his
and his good wife’s hospitality.
Words tail to enumerate the good
things spread for dinner, but suf¬
fice it t.o say, that that dinner is
lndellibly imprinted on the memo¬
ry—as well as upon Ine appetite—
of each one present, and just such
culinary dispensations are calcula¬
ted to arouse the envy of the chef
at Deimcnico’a. Co [tirade.
