How Wo Go to Sleep.
•'Order in heaven's first law, 1 ' and
the truth in manifested even in the
process of going to sleep. When a
man drops off to sleep, says the Cin
ainnati Medieal Journal, his body does
not do so all at once, so to speak.
Home senses become dormant before
others, and always in the same order.
As he becomes drowsy the eyes close
and the sense of seeing is at rest. It is
,r,.inu-kly 5 followed by the disappearance
taste. He next loses
the sense inSiueu and then, after a
short interval, the tympanum becomes
insensible to sound, or rather the
nerves which run to the brain from it
tail to arouse any sense of hearing.
The last sense to leave is that of touch,
and in some hypersensitive people it
is hardly ever dormant. Even in their
case, however, there is no discriminat
Ing power or sense .bf what touched
them. This sense is also the first to
return upon awakening. Then hearing
follows suit, after that tasto, and then
the eyes become able to flash impres¬
sions back to the brain. The sense of
smell, oddly enough, though it is by
no means the first to go, is the lust to
come back. The same gradual loss of
power is observed in tne mnscles and
sinews as well as in the senses. Slum¬
ber begins at tho feet and slowly
spreads up the limbs and trunk until
it reaches tho brain, when unconscious¬
ness is complete and the whole body is
at rest. This is why sleep is impossi¬
ble when the feet are cold.

WON BY GEORGIANS.
___
SAVANNAH RIFLEMEN SECURE
THE PRIZE AT SKA GIRT.
They Were Closely Pushed, However,
by Washington’s Team.
The south was victorious over the
north Wednesday in one of the most
important matches ever held at Sea
flirt, N. J. It was the third day’s
programme of tho New Jersey State
Rifle Ash ci ition, and the event was
tbe interstate military match. The
trophy shot for was n largo bronze
“Holdier at Marathon,” presented by
the commander-in-chief on behalf of
the state of New York to be shot for
annually and to be held during the
year by the adjutant general of the
state whose team wins it now. It is
at tho statehouse at Trenton, it having
been won last year by the New Jersey
marksmen. When the Savannah slioot
ers start for home they will take thiB
trophy along with them, and each con¬
testant on the team will wear a medal
to show what he did toward maintain¬
ing the reputation of the south.
Tho wind was blowing about six
miles nu hour when the match com¬
menced at 9:30 a. m. The guardsmen
sot their wind guages accordingly. As
the day wore on the wind increased.
Five teams entered the interstate mili¬
tary match ap follows: Georgia, Dis¬
trict of Columbia, New Jersey, New
York and Philadelphia. Each state
selected twelve of its best marksmen.
At 200 yards the position was stand¬
ing and at 5,00 yards prone.
An Exciting Finish.
Georgia led the Washingtons at tho
200-yard mark, but they wero afraid
of the Capital City marksrffen on the
longer range. Captain Cann, one of
the Georgia marksmen, said after the
200-yard scores were finished that ho
doubted very much if the southenfers
would carry away the trophy. The
Washingtou marksmen had made un¬
usually good scores in the 500-yard
range and Captain Cann based his
prediction on that fact. Little atten¬
tion was paid to either New York,
Pennsylvania or New Jersey, as they
were practically out of the race, al¬
though tho New York boys put up a
fairly good score on the long rang.;,
but tho low score of 473 gave them
little chance of winning.
The excitement between tho District
of Columbia and the Georgia teams
was at fever heat. Captain William¬
son, of the last named team, stood by
his men and coached them. When
Private Pollard, who is over 60 years
of age and as spry and agile as a man
of 20, missed the targot at tho seventh
round on tho 100-yard range, tho
Georgia boys were jubilant, bnt their
joy was short-lived. Carloton made a
score of 49 out of a possible 50. This
dampened the enthusiasm of tho
southerners. highest Up to that time the
scorn was 48, made by F. F.
Wilson, of Georgia.
Georgia Wins.
It was anybody’s match until the
last shot was fired. When the scores
on the two ranges were added it was
found that the Georgians had made
1,043 points to the District of Colum¬
bia’s 1,037, a difference of only six.
Then a cheer went up that drowned
tho noise of tho shooting. Captain W.
W. Williamson was the happiest man
on tho grounds. He shook the hand
of every one of his men and congratu¬
lated them on the good shooting they
had made. No fooling of hostility was
there among the gathering of national
marksmen, no feeling of envy existed.
It was one nation bound together by a
fraternal bond of friendship. The
Washington guardsmen sentup a cheer
and the Georgia boys followed with
three cheers and a tiger for their op¬
ponents.
W HARF AND FREIGHT BURNED*
Valuable Merchandise Destroyed by
Fire iu Boston.
Tho Boston and Albany extension
wharf and freight sheds in East Bos¬
ton, known as pier 1, Grand junction
docks, were destroyed liy fire Wednes¬
day morning. The sheds were filled
with freight of various kinds, none of
which could bo saved. In the sheds de¬
stroyed were stored about 5,000 hales
of sisal grass, fifteen to twenty car
loads of hav iu hales, nearly fifty car
loads of flour in sacks, a large quantity
of wool and hemp, sixteen car loads of
merchandise, and a large amount of
general merchandise all valued at about
$300,000. The wharf and buildings
destroyed were worth $200,000. The
losses on freight will fall upon the
consignees aud shippers, who, it is
stated, have their goods insured.

Artificial Marble.
Nine-tenths of the marble-topped
tables and so on—what I might call
furniture marble—seen in this coun¬
try, are made of artificial marble, said
a man in the trade.
Thousands of tons of this mock mar
ble are made annually, and even men
in the trade can scarcely tell the dif¬
ference between the real and the false
article, for the markings, or mar¬
kings, go wholly through the block,
and are not merely superficial. The
basis of the whole is a combination of
limestone and chalk, which, chemical
ly treated, can be made of any shade
desired. The artificial marble in the
rough is placed in a water bath, and
upon this is sprinkled a sort of varn
ish, consisting of sesquioxide of iron,
gum, and turpentine, and all manner
of marbled designs are produced when
the turpentine is broken up by the
d.turn of water
Any pattern of marbling can be pro
duced to order. Once such pattern
appears, the air is expelled from the
block, and the colors are fixed by tho
immersion of the stone in sulphate
and warm water baths, and then an
other bath of sulphate and zinc so
closes up the pores and hardens the
stone that it acquires the density of
the natnral article, and can be cut and
jiolished in the same manner.—Ex.
Why it Failed.
“No, our onion social was not a
success. ”
“Onion social? What is that?”
“Why, all of the girls stand up in a
row and one of them is selected to
take a bite out of an onion. Then the
young men pay 10 cents a guess as to
who ate tho onion.”
“Yes.”
“And if he guesses right he gets to.
kiss all the other girls.”
"I see.”
“And the girl who bit the onion
kisses all the fellows who guess wrong.
And that is where tho row began.
of the girls wanted to be the onion

right, you know.”—Cincinnati Tri¬
