An eleotric device has lieen brought
uat for nee in b *xing, and is desoribed
as a registering armor for boxers.
This devioe is a simple airangcment of
belts whioh are strapped over the face
sad abont the body. These straps
contain electric push-buttons located
at certain points, which arc connected
by wires to a register apparatus. In
this way the practice of b->xitig can be
redneed to a very scientific basis, and
••very hit scored when a point is made.
The belts and buttons, of coarse, are
cushioned, so that no blow cao harm
the body, and thus the practice of
boxing has many unpleasant features
eliminated therefrom.

Various Departments.
Captain William L. Merry, consul
general of Nicaragua to the western
slates and territories of the United
States, states that he haB just received
intimation that the commission ap¬
pointed by President Cleveland to ex¬
amine into the Nicaraguan canal pro¬
ject intends to make a favorable re¬
port to the president on November
1st.
The British ambassador Sir Julian
Pauncefote authorizes an uuqniilifi-*d
denial of the published statement that
he called Rt the state department on a
mission of great importance, and that
he informed Secretary Oln* y that in
view of the interpretation which the
country places on the Monroe doctrine
it! connection with the Venezuelan
dispute, Great Britain would a k for
delay in preparing its reply and sub
mining it to this government.

After more than a score of years
waiting, Autoinio Maxima Mora re¬
ceived Friday through repreHolitatives
payment for the confiscation of liis

directly to Dr. Rodriguez and Cratn
mond Kennedy,attorneys for Mr. Mora,
in the form of a check signed by Mr.
Gluey, drawn on the assistant treasu¬
rer of the United States at New York.
The aiuouut of the check was !$594,-
809.76, which represents Mr. Mora’s
interest in the indemnity secured from

made to other persons.
Favors the Canal Project.
It is understood in Washington that
the report of tin* engineer cointniVsion,
which visited Nicaragua last summi r,
will favor the construction of uu iu
ter-oceauic canal, but that it will not
recommend the entire route already
surveyed and upon which it is
claimed that work costing in the
aggregate several millions of dollars
has been performed. It is also bele ved
that the commissioners will fix tli.-cost
of the canal at much greater sum than
that estimated by the Maritime Canal
Company, whose charter it is propos¬
ed that the govt rnment shall purchase.
It is expected that tho commissioners’
report will claim that tho waterway
eannot be built and tlie harbors on tho
Atlantic and Pacific coasts he placed
in proper, condition for a sum much
less than $100,000,000.

TRADE TOPICS.
Bradstreet’s Review of Business for
the Past Week.
Bradstreet’s review of trade for the
past week says:
“There is less push to the general
commercial movement this week iudi
cated hb much V>y reports from western
jobbers and o'hers, whose travelers
have returned from trips west and
northwest. There are, of course, note
worthy exceptions, Baltimore mer¬
tbauts finding relatively movt satis ae
tory trade. This is largely due to the
remarkably favorable conditions at the
south. In general, the volume of busi¬
ness appears slightly stnalh r 'hisw-ek,
but with a widespread, although sour s
what irregular demand.
“Thetotal business failures through¬
out the United States tliia week aggre¬
gate 229, us against 274 last week, 253
ia the like week one year ago, 340 and
2*6 for the same weeks in 1893 and
1892. At the west busine s failur s
practically doubled this week a:i Com
pared with laat.
“Favorable trade reports from the
south continue to specify continued
increases of wholesale and ret il d •
msnd, with cotton moving freely.
Collections are improving and mer¬
chants anticipating indebtedness iu
some instances. Bank clearings con¬
tinue to increase,
“The increasing cotton movement
and speculation is probably responsi¬
ble for the large gain at New Orleans,
55 per cent; Baltimore, 28 per cent,
and Havanuah 19 per cent. Among
other large gains is that of 27 per cent,
ut Philadelphia.
“Among higher prices for staples
are those for cotton anil cotton goods,
which reflect immense speculation and
good actual d< mand, growing out of
belief in a short crop. Reports that
New Orleans houses have tried to cor
ner October delivery are Raid to lu
confirmed by strong support from that
market. Wheat closes higher on »
better export demand and continued
dry weather, although soring wheat
receipts are very large. Winter wheat
brands ot fl ur are scarce and higher.
Corn is firmer on restricted receipts.”

Telephone Newspaper,
The telephone newspaper organized
at Pestb, Hungary, has now been
working successfully for two years. It
is called the Telephone Hirnoudo, or
Herald, costs 2 cents, like a printed
paper, and is valuable to persons who
are unable or too lazy to use the r
eyes, or who cannot read.
It has 6,00(1 subacrib< rs, who receive
the news as they would ordinary tele¬
phone messages. A special wire 168
miles long runs along the windows of
the houses of Bubseribi-rs, which are
connected wiih the ma n line by sepa
rate wir-s and special apparatus which
prevents the blocking f the sy-tem by
an accident at any of the stations.
Within the houses, long, flexible wir- s
make it p->s-ibie to carry the receiver
to i he bed or auy other part of the
room.
The news is not delivered as it , hap
pens to come in,but is carefully edited
and arranged according to a printed
schedule, so that a subscriber at any
time knows what part of the paper he
is going to bear.
It begins with the night Ulegrams
from all parts of Europe. Then comes
the calendar of ev.-nts for the day, with
the city oews aud the list of t-traugers
ftt the hotels. After that follows u rti
cles on music, art and )i(erattire.
The staff ia organized like that of
any other uewspap- r, and is on duty
from 7:30 in the morning until 9:30
o’clock at night. After the copy has
passed through the editor’s hands, lor
the paper is subject to the same re
strictions as ordinary newspapers, and
is liable for its communications, it is
given to the “speakers.” These arc
ten men with strong voic* s and clear
euunc ation, who work in shifts of two
at a time and la.k the news throu-h ’
the telephone.
Ibureare twenty-eight editions ut
tered a day. Additions to the first edi
tion are announced as news items.
To fill the time when no newsis com
ing in the subscribers are entertain
ed with vocal aud instrumental con
ceris. These were at first given for
them especially iu the office of The
Hirnondo, but now the wire is in com¬
munication with the Optra hntise and
the music halls, and on Sundays and
saints’ days with the churches.
The music is transmitted at times
to other places in Auslro-Hungary,
aud recently The Hirnondo michro
phone was connected with the c remit
going from Trieste, through Vienna,
Bremen and Pesth to Berlin, the music
being heard in all these places with
equal clearness and force.
