i Asks Uncle Sam for Peace—Miles
Lauds Troops on Porto Rican
Soil.
anica, Tuesday General Miles landed bis array at Gu
a small town on the south coast of Porto
Rico.
At the rime of the landing thepe was a spirited
engagement between the Ame icapis and ’he Span¬
iards and four of the enemy were killed before they
decided to give up the town.
The place of landing is only ten or fifteen miles
from a macadamized road tunning north eighty^
five miles to San Juan, to which place Miles will
march as soon as his army is all landed.
I The landing will occupy a week or ten days and
at the end of that time the advance will begin and
it will be but a matter of a few hoi »s till the Amer¬
icans wifi conquer the enemy and;:; the flag of free¬
dom will be floating over the island of Porio Rico.
General Brooke left for Porte Rr-p last week
and rapidly the troops at railroads C’hickamauga are fo wing him
as as the can move theifi.
Miles and Brooke wffl '.Gir*jpg«4.a force of 3.0,000
1 or 40, 000 men and will not be lacking in men or e
quipments, as was General Shatter at Santiago.
Col. Wood, who commanded the rough riders,
has been appointed military governor of Santiago.
The Cubans who joined Shaffer’s army have
withdrawn from his command and retired to the
interior and will fight on their own hook, Garcia
got his back up at Shatter because him and his
crowd of savages were not permitted to murder
the prisoners and loot the town, after it was cap¬
tured.
On their way out from Santiago the Cubans am¬
bushed a force of Spaniards, who were going in to
surrender and turn over their arms, and the Dons
licked the everlasting life out of the cowardly Cu¬
bans and marched on into town and gave them¬
selves up to Shafter.
Through the minister from France, Spain asks to
epen nego iations of peace with the United States.
The President has consented to do this and an ex¬
change of propositions will occur in due course of
time,
li; tfie meantime operations of our army will
cot be effected until peace measures assume some
tangible shape.
