AVERT WHITETfER WRITE8 FROM
PHILIPPINES,
Okas, Samar, P. I., May 10,1902
Dear Editor—As I have just return
ed from my usual afternoon wain
along the beach, I grasp this golden
opportunity of writing you and my
many friends who are readers of your
valuable paper I have had a world
of experience since l left old “Geor
gia.” I enlisted at Ellijay in the U
S. army and was sent to Columbus,
Ohio. At that place I had my fits!
experience as a soldier and, strange
to say, I liked it. I was one of the
few recruits who weie satisfied with
the affairs at Columbus Our duti< s
at Columbus wero very eaty as w*
did no guard duty, but drib was
plentiful. We got four drills of one
hour each daily. I remained in Co¬
lumbus four weeks and was then
sent to San Francisco to embark for
Manila, P I December 10, 1901
found me on board the U S. army
transport Hancock, and on that day
we sailed from “tiod’s country.” W e
made but one stop from San Fran,
cisco to Manila, and tint was at
Honolula, the pastoral city of the
world. There we remained four
long and weary days for the purpose
of taking a supply of coal we were
allowed to go ashore and, of course,
I was among the ones to «o but, alas,
none of ua had any money, as we did
not get paid at San Francisco or
Columbus. Most of the men sold all
their blue clothing, while others sold
their shoes—everything salable went.
From Honolula to Manila it is six
teen days sailing I cannot tell you
what happened on any sailing day as
I was very seasick, and so were most
of the others. I did not believe in
seasickness before I left Frisco, but
t wo hours after I left I believed in
it, and so did many others. Some
of the men wanted to jump over¬
board, but I was not one of them, I
was not able to stand up on deck
We arrived in Manila bay January
18,1902 and wero transferred to a
much smaller vessel and set sail for
the island of Samar, the seat of hos¬
tile action. Samar is third to the
largest bland in the Philippine
group, and is situated on the *outh
from Manila. Samar has had some
of the hardest engagements, (or
scraps, as a soldier would say) of any
island in the group. After ray arri¬
val in Samar I was assigned to the
famous 9th Infantry, the regim nt
which performed such gallant service
in China during the outbreak of
1900. The 9th Infantry has been
almost constantly in active service
Bince their arrival h«re three years
ago. One month ago peace was de
dared on the island and the killing
is all over. This regiment will soon
go home and I will have to go to
another outfit as I am too new in the
soldiering I business to go home.
will now give you a “graphic”
description of the Philippines as I
find them today—I cannot say how
I will see them tomorrow The
Philippines are a bunch of trouble
situated on the western horiaen of
civilisation, bounded on all sides by
••Destruction" and the principal city
ia Manila,-which is ihe capital. Ma¬
nila is noted for its large number of
saloons, Chinese and drunken sol¬
diers. The chief imports are arms
and soldier*, and the chief expert*

A few days ago four of us obtain¬
ed a pass and permission to visit
leper town, a small town two miles
distant from Oras. In leper town
there are many strange human be¬
ings, all caused by leprosy. Some of
the best looking inhabitants of th
Philippines hive this horrible dis¬
ease. Here one will see men in all
shapes and women the same; some
of them have one arm, others have
one and a half, while there are some
whole people and some half ones.
I will close this tale With re¬
