THE CHATTOOBA ADVERTISER j the orncMi. on ii.x or THURSDAY, CIPTEMBER 21 t, im. j Effects of the “New Departure” Doc- ‘ trine. This cunni: glv devised scheme of tlie Radicals to dlsifact the counsels i nf the Denroevatie party we bn/te will j be protnpdy ignored by every man ; who dotodts the corruption B 'd in trigue of the preseat dominant party. The idea that the wro: g# of a down trodden and rawed people are to be forgotten or rather that they are to be perpetrated and the helpless vic tim' are to be sde - red afid a promise extorted from them that the tyraideal amendments made to our Constitution for our humiliation and overthrow, are never to be referred to and that we are to look up and kiss the rod which smites us and say it is all right. None but a party guilty of such a fearful record could ask of a brave but vanquished people such self stunifica tion. Whilst the old issues which divi dfcd the Whig ad Democratic parties are for the time at an end, we do not think it politic for the Conservative party to suffer the Radical to dictate what shall be leading issues in the next great Presidential contest.— With pride the latter party which has trampled under foot the most hallowed provisions of the Constitution, will point to the fact that the party op posed are without issues —and will signally triumph. Probably the most essential element entering into the heart of communi ties < r nations is rest. Rest from the many pgtty annoyances common among men and rations—but nore especially rest from tattlers, uewn-mougers and croakers of all sorts and of every de scription—and from political huxters and demagogues, good Lord deliver us. Who is it hut can see that in poli tics as well as every other sort of public life, that the standard of mor als is being lowered, and tLat most powerful of all earthly tribunals pub lic opinion is fast loosing its force.- Men seem to cure very little what the worlds opinion of them is, if the en terprise in which they are engaged will pay. Wc may be a little too fast, but it does seem that some of the Wes tern and At’artic Railroad officials have just lately learned that conscience is a hard master. It is actually treat ing them cruelly in compelling them to disgorge some of their ill-gotten gains—but no gain to them, they seem to have been.ready all the time to pay over, son e ?t,0()6 some $2,000, and others from SO,OOO to $20,000 if they had just knowm who to pay to. That Railroad ought to change hands if there is no where in the by-laws a pro vision made for a general custodian of its funds. We bad been of the opin ion all thetimethttt there was a Treas urer, but if there is none these poor fellows ought not to lie held up to public ridicule. Tlrev had no one to tel' them where Mr. Angicr lived, and they could not find out themselves, and then they did not know who to pay the money over to. Taking this view of the matter, and beii g always willing to appolo gize for the frailties anil short comings of our fellow-man, we offer kite above, it being the excuse they give them selves for holding on to money that was not their own. Widows, Avridow in her weeds particularly when the weeds arc jest turning pui ple. always liad peculiar attraction; for roe. 1 can no more resist otic ilian could Eve the serpent, and when they a- e plump and fair, and not quite forty, my abmirution for them* runs into something akin to idolatry. I have in my mind's eye, now: o, c whom I met years ago. Her hair tv a; black and abut dant. and tvtirn, tvs was then the fu-hion, ni ringlets at the side of her face, ai.t! wound in a broad braid like a crowt . across the top of her head, cudis git a seemly «- u , smoothly twisted knot at the back,— Ihe expression of her countenance was pensive, but when she smiled it rippled with sunshine. She bad a low, sweet voice, and when she spoke my name, it sounded more musically than the notes of silver bells. Site had a plump, little hand, that it was a comfort to sceeze, and a pair of dainty feet that > ( was a real pleasure catch glimpses of as the owner ,n t * ie n,u J dance. There was only one Irawback to all these attirc iious, which had Jared score* of young fellows to her feet, which was that I w idowhood was a chronic complaint j with her. No sooner did she get married and was niceFy settled in their own boose. I her husband’s life largely insured, end every prospect bright before them, than the happy husband, like the “dear gazi’l<* ’ of the song, vas sure to die. Sometimes he was thrown out of a carriage and killed ; some times he committed suicide; some times a railway went over him ; and once, when in tbeir bridal tour, he slipped into the water, and went over Niagara Falls. Five times she es sayed marriage, and the last husband only escaped the fate of the others by getting a decree of divorce. Os courss, after awhile men became shy of ’marrying the widow, and the result is that for several years part she has enjoyed her widowhood, such as it now is, unchallenged matrimonial ists. The New York coi respe.ident of the Washing.on Patriot, writes: Si.ange scenes sometimes occur in hospitals, but (lie crowding accom plishment rca'lv took place yesterday at the Park Hospital. A laborer was brought in suffering from deli riem tn.uens, and in a few minutes after bis arrival died. His heart eased to beat, respiration was sus pended, and his body became cold. But two of the hospital physicians determined to bring back the fleeting spirit, and commenced the work in good earnest. One blew bis own breath in the man’s nose, and the other administered what is known as “percussion treatment.” The clock pointed ten minutes and the labor was telling severlv upon these disci pies of Galen. But they would not yield, and when fifteen minutes lmd elapsed a gasp from what had been a lifeless corpse repaid them; then he actually breathed, his heart palpita ted, and lo! the dead came back to life. The gentlemen who so kind ly exerted themselves for the papen.t we-e Drs. Nichols and Wandewa ter. They Say. —“ They Say” is a nui sance. lie is forever making mischief. Forever poking his nose into some body's business.' Foreter vilifying Roinebody’s character, forever doing something mean. We suspeet “They Say” lias ruined about as many peo ple as whisky and the faro bank. “They Say” is a snake in the grass. Professing the warmest friendship to your face he vilely traduces you be hind your back—not in the first per son singular, be it remembered, for he is too crafty for that, but he re tails, which Aminidab Sleek-like sor row, what other pcopclc say of you—in short what “They Say.” “They Say” is a humbug. Tear off the hypocritical mask he wears and you shall see, very often, baseness and kanavevv of the ' blackest kind. Sometimes, we. admit, “They Sav” ’s weak minded, and slanders people more through ignorance and thought lessness than a \vi,h to dcs.vov i heir good name, but he is none the less a nu'sence for that, and God help his victims in either case. lle Got thf Gash.—A colored member of the Legist uro of Texas was met upon the street with a large roll of greenbacks in his hand, and cackling so loud that he attracted the attention of the bystanders, who said to him, ‘What are you laughing at Jim?,. Jim replied, ‘You see that money?’ Yes.’ Well, Boss, I just got that for niv vote; I’se been bought four or five times in my life, but dis is de fust time I ewe* got de cash mv self!.’ OBITUARY? Died in Louisville, Ky., on the Bth day of September 1871, Dr, I. A. Thomas, of Home, Ga. The deceased came to Ins death by a collision of trains on the Nashville & Louisville Railroad, in winch he was mortally wounded and died a few hours afterwards. He leaves an affection ate wife and two little babes, an aged mother and brothers and sisters to mourn his loss. But they do not mourn as those that have no hope, for their loss is his eternal gain, lie had been a consistent member of the M. K. Church for thirteen years, had an amiable disposition and loved all of God's people, and loved to attend the house of God. He *vag loved and re spected bv all who knew him, and was an affectionate son and a father to hi orphan sisters, for which he has gone to receive his reward in Heaven.— May his relatives and friends be con strained to follow his footsteps, and may the God of mercy extend the great arm of protection around his little family: for He has promised to be a God to the widow and a father to the orphan. Oh may they meet Around the throne of God ia Heaven! He died away from home, but no t without friends; he always found friends wherever he went, and in the hour of death he had a true friend to take him home to Heaven, for “bles sed are the pure in heart for thev shall see God.” He is not dead, but sleeperh By his brother.
