Through the dim, silent watches of
the night, when all around are hushed
in sleep, it is here to keep long vigils,
and to hold communion with her <sod.
and silently lift her heart fit silent
prayer for the prolongation of life for
which she would cheerfully sacrifice
her own. And even when exhausted
nature sinks to brief repose, forget
fulness is denied. Even in her sleep
she seems awake to this one great ob
ject of her care. She starts and rises
in her slumbers, raises her head, and
watches with dreamy eyes the fuce she
loves, then sinks again to rest, to start
with every chitne of clock or distant
sound, whioh formerly had passed un
heard, or only served as a lullaby to
her sweet sleep.
Home. —ls there is one word that
fills the heart with joy, it is home.—
Home is an old word, yet it has in
vincible power that can never lessen
or wear out. There is no other in
t* language that clusters so many
phasing affections, and that so pow
erfully ascites our -feelings. We are
bound to try it by ties of early affec
tions, by years of childhood, by a
father’s and brother’s friendship, by
a mother's and aister’s love. Home!

the corresponding week of last ’ year,
and that large and unusual quantities
are on the way. The clothing manu
facturers and dealers, the hardware
establishments, and merchants and
traders in other goods, are in similar
expectant and prepared conditions for
the opening of trade.

saying, “dear Albert; 1 know it is you,

cheek close to mine. It was hot with
love's young hope anil pure, sweet af
fection. \V e were very happy. None
but a w icked man would have brought
sadness to this sweet, pure young
heart—full of confidence, warm with
virgin affection, and beautiful with
splendid girlishness.
“Do you still love me, Albert?” she
whispered.
“Undoubtedly.” I remarked.

mured. as she twisted her fingers in

The Little Folks.—Don’t expect
too much of them; it has taken forty

We have often felt our temper rise
to see how carelessly their plans were
thwarted by older persons, when a
little trouble on their part would
have given the children pleasure, the
memory of which wmld have lasted a
lifetime. Lastly, don’t think a child
hopeless, because it betrays some had
habits. We have known children
that seemed to have been born thieves
and liars, so early did they display
these «■ desirable habits; yet these
same child t*en have become noble men
at and worne*.
A rural youth who was in the city
one day, casually dropped in at a
hard ware store. Lounging through
the store, he came to a large buzz
saw suspended against the wall.—
Giving it a rap with his knuckles,
producing a sharp ring, he remarked
to the storekeeper, who came in at the
moment: l I had an old dad ripped
to pieces by one of ’em fellows, last

accosted by a gentleman as to which
wav he was going, confessing with
dismay that he was fleeing from the
State, as he has just heard that the
‘jury was to be hung.’ This is rela
