The Chances for a Railroad Increasing
We are always glad to have it in
our power to note any new prospect
for a Railroad through thia paK of
Georgia. Whilat our people have been
baffled, disappointed and disheartened
by the efforts heretofore made, we
trust that we are about to emerge
from the “slough of despondency"
where we have so long been drifting.
The North & South road will not
be a paying investment unless it has
a direct connection with Chattanooga.
The charter for that road, we think,
in the first instauce, should have been
asked for from Columbus to Chatta
nooga.
The Selma, Rome & Dalton Road we
feel sure will have its stock enhanced
one hundred per cent when it has a
branch from Rome to Chattanooga.
The Memphis Branch now being
constructed under such favorable aus
pices, will also be signally benefited.
Then why delay when such practical
results will flow from the construction
of a lino of road only sixty miles in
length ?
The great Cincinnati road will be
commenced next March. The sur
▼eys will be made this year—the right
of-wsy secured, and everything ar
ranged for its rapid construction after
it is commenced. Working at both
ends, in the middle and all along is to
be the programme on that great thor
oughfare. We have seen it stated
that the bonds of the company can
probably be disposed of at 4 per cent
premium. It is to be completed in
two years, at farthest, from the time
it is commenced.
The Kentucky Legislature has re
pealed almost every objectionable fea
ture connected with the original bill
which was introduced for the purpose
of defeating it. The next Legisla
ture will certainly make a clean sweep
and then, unencumbered, this long
planned stfhetn* *»wy y>. consummated.
The city of Louisville lias given over
her bitter opposition, and it is now
confidently expected that in both
branches of the Kentucky Legislature
the bill will have an overwhelming
majority, freed from all its former dis
abilities.
The city of Chattanooga, ever alive
to her interest, and ever ready with
commendable liberality to foster every
enterprise in her reach, is taking the
initiative steps to arrange for a South
ern extension of this great artery of
trade. In the Chattanooga Daily
Timet of the 11th inst., wo find the
following proceeding of a meeting
held in that city on the night of the
10th:
Another Railroad-
Organisation of the Chattanooga Mont
gomery and Pensacola Ra ilroad.
After the meeting of the Board of
Trade last night, the organization of
the Chattanooga, Montgomery and
Pensacola Railroad was commenced
by the subscription of the following
gentlemen to the capital stock of the
Company of one share each: P. 1).
Sims, John L. Divin*, Thomas Web
ster, J. W. James, R. Henderson, A.
M. Johnson, V. A. Gaskill, L. L.
Thomasson.
The books were ordered to be kept
open for subscription, for thirty days,
at the First National Bank.
John L. Divine had previously been
elected temporary President, and John
W. James temporary Secretary of the
Company.
A committee of three was appointed
to solicit subscriptions in co-operation
with the committee appointed by the
Board, as follows: L. L. Thomasson,
Thomas Webster, R. Henderson.
A. M. Johnson moved that the tem
porary President be authorized to em
ploy a corps of engineers to make a
preliminary survey of the line as soon
as a sufficient amount of stock is sub
scribed and paid in.
After considerable discussion about
the best way of organizing and build
ing the road, the substance of which
was given in the Time*' report of the
Board of Trade meeting of April 4th.
the meeting adjourned to meet at the
call of the President.
Here is a move of some significance.
We know the gentlemen who have ta
ken hold of the enterprise, and we
wish them the greatest success. Will
not the people of Walker and Chat
tooga counties arouse themselves and
second these public spirited gentle
men in their efforts to build a road
which will pass through both counties
and give us a connection with the out
side world, and secure facilities which
we have so long ueeded? We have a
variety of charters—wc can start
where we please and go where we
choose, so far as charters are concern
ed, but still wo sleep over our rights"
84i d drawl out the-stereotyped plirasa
that "-It i* only a qumionr, of time,
*» *hftll have a rsilrowd after » while."
THE CHATTOOGA ADVERTISER APRIL 19, 1872.
j Very true, and we shall all be dead
' and buried "after a while.” The next
| generation, we hope, may have more
public spirit.
Let us then make one more deter
mined effort. We propose another
Railroad meeting somewhere. Let us
give ample notice and cail together
the friends of the enterprise from
Rome to Chattanooga. We don’t ask
for it in Buromorville—Chattanooga,
Lafayette, Trion Factory or Rome is
our preference. What sav our breth
ren of the Press in the former and
latter cities? Others will reap greater
benefits than we hope to derive, but
we pledge our last typo and drop of
ink and oar humble abilities to “fight
it out on this line" until a Railroad
is secured. Appoint the time and
place and we snail be rejoiced to lay
before our readers the action of the
meeting.
To the friends of a Railroad wc
again say, the columns of the Adveii
tieskk are always open to you.
{A World of Wonders
As science progresses it is reasona
ble to expect that many ill-grounded
theories will explode. But when phys
iological teachings which have been
not only sustained by common expe
rience, but actual daily demonstra.
tions are set aside we stop to consider
what will occur next. In all ages of
the world down to the present it has
always been conceded that when the
head of man or beast was severed
from the body that detth must ensue,
as a natural consequenc; but it has
remained for the 19th Century to dis
pel that delusion.
The idea of life continuing after all
connection between the body and
brain had ceased, has never been re.
gardad as reasonable. The brain, the
great sentinel of animal life, presid
ing oyer the various functions of the
body, physiologists have always taught
was an essential to the continuance of
life. When its functions are disturbed
how soon the whole system sympa
thizes! Mania, delirium and halluci
nations are but a few of the many ef
fects which alHict the mental faculties,
while paralysis and general ill health
mark its effects upon the physical sys
tem.
But the guillotine may now cease
its work. The Alabama Rooster has
upset all former theories of animal
We.' When decapidated by his owner,
after fluttering a while, he commenced
walking about, and as he found he
still had a lease of life made an effort
to crow. The hemorrhage soon ceased
and he continued to perambulate his
former “beat," making but little com
plaint of the rude treatment to which
he hail been subjected. His owner
hastily conceived the idea of amassing
a fortune by exhibiting this “wonder
of a wondering world,” but how to
nourish him and perpetuate his exist
ence became a question of serious im
port, since his head bail been removed,
lie soon discovered that libuid food
could be introduced into the oesopha
geus, or gullet, by proper manipula
tion. The experiment was tried and
proved a success, lie lives, thrives
and is making a tour through the
Southern cities. Crowds gather eve
rywhere unwilling to believe until they
have had ocular demonstration—eve
ry time he is .sold hundreds more are
added to his value. But whilst we are
creatures of imitation, the feathered
creation it would seem are subject to
the same frailty, if such it may be
termed. The citizens of Atlanta had
scarce ceased their amazement when
a gentleman of that city had occasion
to kill a Guinea fowl, who, it seems,
was ambitious of notoriety, and that
is now being exhibited without ahead.
When will wonders cease? Life per
petuated and all of the senses abol
ished. Hearing, smelling, feeling,
tasting, seeing, all gone, and still the
animal lives, moves and has a being.
Medical .gentlemen look at each other
in astonishment, and Insurance agents
are nonplussed and hesitate to issue a
policy.
“TVuth is stranger than fiction,”
but it is not every fowl that is thus for
tunate. One man has killed all his
chickens in trying to find one that
would live without a head, but we sup.
pose they were not of the right breed.
A small boy was arrested in Chicago
the other day for vagrancy, when lie
asserted that he could prove an alibi.
Saiu that was the first day he had been
from home in three, as their folks
had the stnall-pjx. The jollv Justice
said sharply: “For ravens sake stand
further away from us n that’s the
case.’’ The “shyster" skedaddled,
the visitors vanished, the poliece de
parted; and the reporters jumped
through a window and never stopped
running until they reached the office
of the sanitary superintendent, where
“di-infectants” were freely indulged
in at fifteen cents a disinfect.
