TnE CHATTOOGA ADVERTISER Ci. JkZ lit- TUCKEJa. Editor And Proprietor Samuel Hawkins, Associate EdiTcr. FBI DAY, MAY 17.1872. South Carolina and Her Trials. The merciless persecution which is being wTfaked upon South Carolina raises the enqnirv why that little State is so harshly dealt with? Her people have suffered certainly enough during the war and since, to satisfy the ven geance of the Federal Government, and whatever of bitterness her foes may h-v» had against her for her par ticipation in the rebellion, the impov erished, ruined condition of'her in habitants, wc think, is sufficient to sa tiate their spiteful natures. True it was urged whilst Charleston was in n state of siege, that if it could be ta ken the city should be razed, not one brick left upon another, and the ground on which the city stood, Northern Statesmen and editors urged should bo sowed with salt. More than this, while the effort was made by the Fed eral commander to burn the city with Greek fire some demons hoped that not only Greek fire but fire from the infernal regions might fall upon the devoted city, and not leave a vestige of its former greatness. Her govern ment has passed into the hands o£ the hungry wolves and J auk alls who rushed there after the war to make laws for her one* chivalrous people, and the present bankrupt condition of South Carolina tells the sad story of her swindling legislation. Property has rapidly depreciated and thousands of her best citizens have silently bidden adieu to the graves of their ancestors and sought for themselves and fami lies a home in other States and Ter ritories. But, as if to free the State from the presence of hor former Bons, a fresli and unmitigated war commenced on her peoplo last year in the shape of arrests and trial for par ticipation in Ku'Klux outragos.— These may have taken place in some sections, but why such unmeasured, ruthless persecution? Men discon nected from the organization, and never sympathizing with it, have been arrested upon tho evidence of the meanest wretch in their community and dragged off to filthy dungeons to await their trial before Some ignorant, prejudiced tribunal. Suspicion was good evidence. Many have sought safety in flight, but recently wo havo seen that gentlemen who had fled from her distracted borders have been ar rested in Cartersville, Atlanta and other places and carried hack to be in carcerated until a mock trial can take place How this is affecting the interest of her distracted people tho following from tho Charleston Newt clearly il lustrates : “Very few persons have any defi nite idea of the extent of tho injury inflicted upon the agricultural and and commercial interests by the whole sale arrests which have been made in the upper counties of this Stato.— The people heartily condemn the out rages which sueli men as the witnesses for the government confess that they have committed; but they know that innocence is no shield, and they fleo from South Carolina to avoid an in carceration which may be their fate whenever a vernal or half-erazcd cql ored man chooses to make an accusa tion against them. Asa necessary consequence the cultivation of the soil is suspended, the merchants return their goods to the firms from whom they w ere bought, and the people of nine counties live in a condition of uneasiness which had no parallel dur ing the fierce years of war. In the small county of Laurens, by actual count, five hundred ploughs lie idly in the fields. That county alone looses the cultivation of ten thousand aeres of land as the result of tho savage ■persecution which the General Govi eminent bus carried on. Any practi cal farmer, in tho North or West, can calculate for himself how much dam age is clone the country by such suspen > sion of labor in tho spring of the year. Nay! theeoloredlaborers, who are thrown out of employment, feel acutely the wrong of which they are in their degree, the victims. No One in South Carolina pretends to justify crime or excuse hideous outrages; hut nothing has been unearthed to justify the intervention of the United States authorities, or to warrant them in de livering up thousands of American citizens to the tender mercies of spies and paid informers.” Communicated. Mr. Editor: Ever since the organization of the Independent Order of Good Templars at Summerville, I have been paying very strict attention to their proceed ings, both orally and through the col umns of your paper, all of which 1 heartily endorse. It lias always been a settled policy with me never to con nect myself with any institution which does not promise to he a success in all its various operations, and 1 am happy to know that if I connect my self with Gwaitncy Lodge my hopes will be fully realized. In this I feel the more confident since it lias for its «Eject the amelioration of our race, and since so nianv tried, veteran citi THE CHATTOOGA ADVERTISER; SUMERVILLE, GA., MAY 17, 1872. : r.ens have rallied to its support and | are aided by the fair maidens of our i land, to whose charms we must all | yield our atlmiration. i 1 havo never iu my life been in a stare of intoxication, and have never drank at a public Bar; but I feel by connecting myaelf with the organiza tion I shall be tha better enabled to accomplish good to mv fellow-men. Now, my friods and fellow citizens, 'to which-class shall we belong in this effort to check and suppress this mon ster evil in oui land? Shall we be active participants in aiding the friends of Temperance in their praiseworthy efforts, or lie pasgive agents while the great contest is being waged against king alcohol? And now I do not hesitate to say, without fear of suc cessful contradiction, that the most degraded object that has ever met my gaze is the drunkard—a being who, bereft of all control of his passions, is sinking into a premature and dis honored grave. I have not the power to describe the drunkard's home, as it should be. It is but a meagre outline to speak of the empty house, bare walls and half famished inmates, who show that care and protection are un known in that sad abode. There in one corner sits the heart-broken wife, whose heart was won in her once hap py home. In her face the furrows of sadness and woe have made that which was onee beautiful the picture of wretchedness and despair. In one glance she surveys tho past and pres ent —wliat the future will be she dreads to contemplate. Ilis needy, ignorant children, present an appearance which touches tho heart and causes every feeling of our nature to revolt. Dur ing the drunkard's career he is drawn from the paths of honor—step by step he descends from industry to idleness and thence onward until he reaches the lowest depths to which frail hu> inanity can descend, all the noble im pulses of his nature arc abolished and he who once was an ornament to so ciety now sinks to a level with the brute creation. Long live the Order of Good Tem plars with its inspired motto inscribed upon its banners, and may tho time soon come when all Piny heed the glorious cause, And early the refuge seek, Which will shield them from the curse Os such eternal woe. Then will a bright future loom up before a temperate, industrious and virtuous people. Yours, &c., Observer. [Communicated ■] Home, Ga., May 10,1872. Editors Advertiser: I tiotico in your last issue that a corps of engineers will commence the survey of tho lloud from Chattanooga to Rome in a few days. This is good news, and 1 do hope that every man who is in any way interested in the Road boing built will ronder such as sistance as the nature of the case de mands, and that they will do this cheer fully and promptly, and that the sun voy wiil be made through to Romo at an early day, and that the route will be found to be a cheap one. Notwithstanding the citizens of Rome have their hands full already in building the North & South and the Memphis Branch Roads and several other enterprises they will not be found wanting when tho demand is mude upon them, for they are anxious to see the Road built and will do their duty. The Road from Gainesville to King ston is now being surveyed and will no doubt be built in a short time, which will be a very important Road to Rome. There will boa Steamboat meeting hold in this eity on the 18th inst., to form a Company to navigate the Oos tanaula river up as far as Cartersville, and one to navigate the Etowah river up to Euharle, in B-crtow county.— Those enterprises will be of great ad vantage and benefit to the sections of country through which those Boats will run. The meeting you suggest should be held at Lafayette and then one at Summerville and then one some where about Subligna, one at Dirt Town and then one at Rome. We have the greatest country in the world all things considered but it will take capital to develop it. What our people have not got they can very easily Command it if they would all do their, duty, it they were only willing to do their part in all the public enter prises put on foot, and in putting on foot such as they acknowledge would be (>fgreat benifit to our section of the country, but- unfortunately there are so many who aro notjwilling to do what they wish others to do and what they know will benefit them as much as any. All such are drones in any community, they are (lead weights— a clog to the wheels of proggress. They are in our way.
