THE CHATTOOGA ADVERTISER
IT SEVER pays
It never pays to fret and scold
When fortune seems our foe;
The fitter fired will push aliead
And strike the heavier blow.
For luck is work.
And those who shirk
Fhouid not lament their doom;
Hut yield the play,
Arid dear away,
That better men bate room.
It never pays to wreekriie health
In drudging after gain ;
And he is sold who thinks that gold
Is cheapest bought with pain.
A humble lot,
1 cosy cot.
Have tempted even king*;
For stati nt high.
That we dth will buy,
Not oft contentment brings.
Diamonds. —lt is reported that dia
monds and other precious stones have
been discovered in Arizona, and that
» company lias organized to work the
new fields. From a statement in one
of the daily papers, it seems that even
if diamonds prove to be as abundant
ns the reports indicate, the effect upon
the market value of the brilliant stone
will scarcely be appreciable. Before
passing into tlie hands of the dealer,
the diamond must be cut, and thenum
-1 < r of persons capable of performing
this and bento operation is small. In
Amsterdam, where the businesjj is
more largely carried on than in any
other part of the world, the diamond
cutters ha ve recently raised their price,
and entered into a compact not to
receive aprentices, or give instructions
to others, not even to their own sons
for three years. Diamond cutting is
alscfclone in London*an<ft>y two houses
in this country. Messrs. Tiffany &
Go., and a Boston libuse, employ about
a dozen men in this work. The dia
mond cutters have been overwhelmed
with work for a long time, and the lar
gest increase in thcsupply of thorough
stones will not cause, therefore a much
greater number of diamonds to be
thrown upon the market.
A young lady in Pennsylvania, at
an evening party, found it apropos to
use the expression," Jordan is a hard
road to travel;” but thinking that too
vulgar, substituted the following:
"Perambulating progression in pedes
trian excursion along the far famed
thoroughfare of fortune cast up by
the sparkling river of Palestine is, in
deed, attended with a heterogeneous
conglomeration of unforeseen difficul
ties. ’
An Historic Tree.—A land sale in
France brings to light some facts con
cerning a tree which is almost as cel
ebrated oil the Continent im the “Roy
al Oak” in which King Charles found
refuge, is in England. The proper
sold is a residence a Montravail,
in the court-yard of which stands
the famous Montravail oak,” which
naturalists assert to be more than
two thousand years old. This no
ble tree is tin# capable of measur
ing existence with the forest giants
of Calaveras country. ‘‘California.-
This oak, which is entirely hollow,
lias had its interior provided with stone
benches, on which twelve persons
can comfortably sit around a table,
and an entrance door and two win
dows have been cut out of its sides.
In order to ascertain its age, M. d’-
Orbigny cut out a piece of its entire
1 hickness and boled it in oil, which is
an intalible mode of bringing to light
the separate layers produced by eacli
year. By this method, and counting
from the center to the circumference,
lie was easily able to prove that fbe
number of layers amounted to two
thousand and some hundreds. This
tree is of course, a great natural cu
riosity, and every year numbers of
persos visit that neighborhood to
view so venerable a relic of the past
which was living and yielding shelter,
as now, to the birds of whole contu
ries before the birth of our Savior.
A lady correspondent of the Wash
ington Capital says that a Boston lady,
who recently got herself up most gor
geously for a dinner nt one of the
great watering-place hotels, had the
misfortune to sneeze just as she sat
down, when suddenly the half of the
waist of her dress ripped out, and
somebody had to put a shawl aroud
her. Her dressjwas an exeellet lit upon
a well-proportioned form, and, having
been made upon a single-thread sewing
machine, the sneeze broke the thread.
It is no disgrace for a streak of
litening tew strike a woazel and miss
him. If I owned a weazel, litening
mite strike at him all day for oO cents
u clap.— ll’dlingt.
A German who was lately married,
says, “It is easier for a needle to valk
out of a camel’s eye than for a mans
to get der lasht vord mit a voomans."
Our poor young man remarks that
the only advice he gets from capital
ists is to “live without his income,”
whereas the difficulty he experiences
is to live without an income.
Don’t keep in a constant fret about
things that may be annoying, or wor
ry about things you can’t help. Troub
les are not lightened by fretting. The
true remedy is to keep cool and try to
master the difficulties, and not let
them master you.
Hon. Jerry Black, of Pennsylvania,
we understand, has written a letter in
which, after running a contrast be
tween the two presidential candidates.
Greeley and Grant, he declares in fa
vor of supporting the fenaer in the
present contest.
