Thought*
and
Reflections
By Sharon S. Abercrombie
Psychologists say that they are
n >w convinced that how you get
a ong with other people doesn’t
stem from how you handle other
people—it stems from how you
handle yourself.
For example: If I am satisfied
r< .sonably well with myself, do
I have to get angry with you?
Os course, not! You can say
very odd things. You can even
hold political opinions contrary
to mine and I won’t have to get
too violently angry.
What will cause me to get
at gry or annoyed with you or
bc'ligerantly angry?
When I am afraid of myself.
When I have a fear of something
about me!
Let's say I am afraid I am
not competent or not as lucky,
or not as smart
or I am afra:
ol my health o
any number o
things. Tha'
type of fear wi!
lead me to ac
peculiarly witt :
you.
If I can ai ,
cept mys eI I
then I can a< |
cept you.
Phychologists have found that
the men in industry who are very
skilled in handling other people
, are people who are personally in
’'repose, and they don’t have to
fight other people, they don’t
have to be belligerent because
they are understanding.
Suppose that you have a friend,
a client, a customer a competitor,
and something has gone a little
bit wrong and he begins to raise
the roof with you out of all
proportion to what has happened?
How you can handle that per
•on, If you accept yourself, if
you like yourself, then you can
put yourself out and say. “I want
to understand why this person
Is being so notably belligerent
In relation to such a trifling
thing.”
The art of getting along with
other people in my opinion does
mean that you act in any speci
fic way Each of us has our own
way of acting and each is the
eq .a’cnt of the other as long as
>e like ourselves.
