Prizes To Youngsters
United Daughters of the Con=
federacy, desiring to stimulate
interest among the young people
in the study of southern history,
sponsored a Historical Essay
contest within the Georgia
schools,
On Sunday, April 25, in the
Community Room of the Bank
of Jonesboro, a Memorial Day
service was held for the a=-
warding of the essay prizes,
The invocation was given by
Rev, Mike Portwood of the First
Christian Church of Jonesboro,
This was followed with a pledge
of alleglance to the U,S, flag
and a salute to the Confeder=~
ate flag,
Mrs, W, D, Acker, president
Frankie Lyle Chapter, UDC,
and chailrman of the Fifth Dis
trict of Georgia, welcomed the
winners, their parents and
guests to the 99th Memorial
Day service commemorating
the end of the Civil War and
honoring the men of the North
and South who fell in the At
lanta campaign,
Essay chairman Mrs, G, P,
Babb, made the presentation
of prizes and awards for Clay=-
ton County with the essays be
coming eligible for district and
finally state competition, ‘‘Jef=-
ferson Davis and his Achieve=-
ments?” was the subject for
ninth through twelfth grades
with Wanda Bagwell of Forest
Park High taking firstplace and
Rena Stradiotto of North Clay
ton High placing second,
Essay subject for students
from the fifth. through the

Tuesday evening, April 20, in
ceremonies at East Clayton
Elementary School. The Vol
unteers are undertaking an
entirely new program and a
“first” in the Metro Atlanta
Chapter of the American
Red Cross five-county area.
Mrs. Frank Marchman,
Red Cross Chairman of Vol
unteers in Clayton County,
developed, coordinated and
recruited the 21 volunteers;
headed by Mrs. R. J. Deßon
cey, Chairman of the unit,
and Mrs. Wayne Murdock,
Assistant Chairman.
The program is a pilot for

training in Red Cross First
Aid, Care of the Sick and
basic nursing. The women
will be on duty five days a
week during school hours.
They will serve in the school
health room under the su
pervision of the district
nurse. The volunteers will
be responsible for assisting
in first aid, staying with and
comforting sick children;
assisting the health nurses
with physical examinations;
and such things as arrang
ing transportation home for
sick children and assisting
small or handicapped chil
dren in the school lunch
room.
