detained. There were about se
ven cars between the lead car
and us. We saw that some had
stepped out of their cars,others
had gone to try to help.
Here was a driver trying to get
Into the Expressway with the
car stalled. There were some
that were quite eager to go
ahead. We watched as one of
the cars drove around us on the
right side of the shoulder and all
of a sudden I saw that he fell
into the drain. It seemed that it
shook the car tremendously and
I would not be surprised If it
hurt the car a great deal. An
other man was following but
the mistake of the first avert
ed a mistake on the part of the
second. He was able to go over
to the right side, miss the drain
and culvert and go ahead onto
the Expressway.
As I witnessed this scene, It
reminded me of life. Many of
us are not much concerned a
bout those who are stalled by
the wayside, but are always
eager to go ahead with our
own pursuits.
We’re getting ready for the state’s biggest barbecue.

great celebration! For a great leader again steps

Ellis Arnall served our state before as one

Here are three scenes from
life that help us to understand
just what is taking place In
today’s world. One was along
the roadside and needed help,
one was able to help, an
other rushing past almost
brought about a catastrophe by
falling Into a ditch. Another
learned from the experience
of the one that was ahead and
avoided the pitfall.
Surely there is a lesson from
life that we learned here. As
we think in terms of those
who find their place of ser
vice in God’s kingdom we need
to be willing to serve and

The Jonesboro Senior High
School’s Marching Cardinal
Band participated in the
Sixth Annual "Salute to
America" parade in Atlanta,
July 2, before many enthus
iastic fans. Jonesboro was
one of the ten bands in the
state invited to march in
this annual parade.
For their participation,
each band received SBOO
worth of instruments, a
large American flag, sixty
seconds on live television, all
the Pepsi Cola they could

willing to help others. But also
we recognize that if we are
willing to look to others we
can see the ml stakes they make
and we are able to overcome
thosethat might be tragic for
each of us.
Some people learn from
others’ experiences, o thers
learn from experience and some
just keep on having experiences.
Jesus said something that Is
most appropriate for each of
us z as we consider it. It went
like this, “Thou Shalt love the
Lord thy God with all they heart,
soul, strength and mind and thy
neighbor as theyself.”
We discover that the men who
practice this are those that
miss the pitfalls of life, but
those who fall to practice It
are those who find themselves
subject to destruction.
The Band used Sousa’s
great march for its 60 second
presentation before the re
viewing stand. Featured in
this number was the piccolo
section, trumpets, trombones
and percussion.
The Jonesboro Senior
High Band made a great
showing in this parade, and
we salute all the band mem
bers and their director, Mr.
Marvin King.

ity for all Georgians. Badly needed legislation
became reality. Our state government was mod
ernized. Georgia’s colleges and universities were
i saved.
Ellis Arnall left office a near legend. People
said that here was a man twenty years ahead
of his time. Now the times and the man have
met. For the times again call for Ellis Arnall to
serve the people of Georgia.
The road to the Governor’s office begins
in Newnan, Saturday. Begin with us.

NAME-CALLING GAME
ANY CAN PLAY
BY DAVID P. LINDECAMP
Social Science Department, LaGrange College
Name-calling is a time-honored game, not unlike hog-call
ing, and one that anyone and any number can play. Points
are scored by confusing those who might “disagree’’ with
your point of view. You call then names placing them prepos
terously of the defensive. You amuse those who might “agree”
with your view. The ugly name is familiar phrase connoting to
the listeners their own “supposed” moral superiority.
The true name-caller avoids emotionally neutral language
scrupulously. He never explains reasonings or informs as to
evidence for the correctness of his point of view. To state
clearly just how he came to his belief or what values he really
thinks it serves might not only force him to organize his own
mind, but also incur a penalty—his audience might be more
encouraged to stop and think about the matter. The object of
the game is, of course, the obstruction of intelligent communi
cation about the matter in question by getting persons emotion
ally Involved in the vague symbols invoked.
To become expert, it pays to “keep up with the times.” Other
wise, the caller may use a name not in vogue, and (again)
run the risk of piquing his audience into thinking. Current
familiar names produce habitual responses, and so are not as
likely to “rock the mental boat” as an unusual name would.
For the edification of callers, I present, from a study of
American society and politics, a brief review of current
usages of some timely names-to-call:
“Prejudiced” - A Negro who takes pride in his race and
wants to advance Its relative status Is a good citizen; a white
person who has any feelings at allforhis race is “prejudiced”
or “bigoted.” The caller Is advised to avoid “biased” be
cause it may be more accurate. At law, a bias is a developed
natural loyalty or Interest, whereas “prejudiced” implies
thoughtless pre-judgment and “bigoted” adds obstinate faith.
“Hateful” - You inspire hatred in me; therefore, you are
hateful. The fact that I am a more loving person (high pres
tige) than you Is exemplified by the fact that I hate you be
cause you disagree with me.
“Hate-group” - An organization of the “dirty rats” who
disagree, expeclally as used about those who feel deeply
about their views, when I also have deep Involvements on
the same matter.
“Intolerant” - I am tolerant in that I can stomach certain
disagreements with my views and values. However I cannot
stomach your particular disagreements, and therefore you
are “intolerant.”
“Un-Chrlstlan” - My inside knowledge of what God thinks
tells me that anyone who disagrees with me should not be
allowed to call himself a Christian.
“Un-American” - A citizen who does not fit the pattern
God and I used in designing Americans.
“Authoritarian personality” - You would use the govern
ment to serve values placed in one order, whilst I prefer
its use for a different ordering of values; so, you are an
“authoritarian personality,” and the reason for your differ
ing with me likely lies in your toilet training, or inferior
parents. A variation appears to be “paranoid (paranoic)”
which political users do not even trouble themselves to de
fine.
“Irrational” - Your proposals serve your goals more than
they serve mine, so you are "irrational.” Substitute “mis
guided” when referring to persons of low prestige, and
“insane” for those superior to you. A variant may be
“Irresponsible” with connotations of selfish carelessness.

Looking for a year-round
climate like this?
Cooling/heating via electric
heat pump is just the ticket!
Clean, clean air, fresh and pure, scrubbed
clean by miles of open sea. Even simple
breathing is exhilarating.
Envious because you can’t have air like
this, indoors, at home?
But you can . Install an electric heat pump.
It cools and heats. Changes automatically
as the weather outside changes.
Operates on electricity and air. No flame.
No fumes. No dust, soot or grime, either.
Economical. There’s even a special low
rate for total-electric customers. And budget
billing means your electric bill is the same
amount every month.
So, get a heat pump. Set the thermostat,
once. And forget it.
Hang a Winslow Homer seascape on the
wall. Gaze at it. Breathe deeply. You’ve
undergone a wonderful sea change.
