Clayton County Schools
Have Terrific Growth
Clayton County continues
to grow in population at a
rate that is among the
highest in the nation. This
growth, which has been oc
curring during the past dec
ade, has been accelerated
during the recent years of
this period. Pupil enrollment
has grown from 17,812 in
1964 to 23,311 in 1967 with a
projected enrollment of 28,-
711 for the 1969-70 school
year. This increase in enroll
ment has placed a heavy
burden on the school system

BEST WISHES FROM
HARBIN'S RESTAURANT A 4RIVE4N
Old Highwoy 41 at Forme , Market
to provide an adequate edu
cational program for its
citizens. The citizens of the
county are to be commended
for the excellent cooperation
they have shown in this en
deavor. This cooperation
and support have been evi
denced by the passage of
local bond issues. These
funds along with those re
ceived from the State School
Building Authority have
made it possible to construct
and occupy 222 new class
rooms, of which 160 were for
elementary pupils since 1964.
To provide for the ex
pected 2500 additional pupjl
enrollment next year there
are 62 elementary class
rooms under construction to
be ready for occupancy in
the fall. In addition to the
new Lake Harbin Road Ele
mentary School, Ash Street
School will have a new
lunchroom and four addi
tional classrooms, Lee Street
School six additional class
rooms, and Riverdale School
four additional classrooms.
At Babb Junior High School
a gymnasium is under con
struction. A new North
Clayton Senior High School
building is to be ready for
occupancy in the fall, with
the present building becom
ing the Junior High School.
Both Jonesboro Senior High
and Forest Park Senior High
Schools have new library
buildings under construc
tion, to be completed by the
opening of school.
During the summer of
1967 blds will be let for 50
elementary classrooms, 45
Junior High School class
rooms and other facilities to
provide for the pupil popu
lation through the 1968-69
school year.
Facilities is not the only
area that has received at
tention in recent years as
reflected by an increase in
number of professional per
sonnel from 555 in 1964 to
904 in 1967. One hundred
additional teachers will be
employed for the 1967-68
school year. There has been
a corresponding increase in
non-certified personnel in
the system.
Among the many criteria
that are used to judge the
quality of an educational
program, probably the most
meaningful one is the
amount of money spent per
child. Clayton County has
increased its annual per
pupil expenditure from
$231.40 in 1964 to $339.49 in
1967, an increase of almost
47 per cent.
Clayton County Schools
will continue their efforts
toward providing high
quality educational opportu
nities for children of the
county.
PEE WEE
LEAGUE
With Forest Park Little Lea
gue having opened its 1967 sea
son, the Pee Wee teams got into
action last week. In Monday’s
game the Hawks took the Bom
bers, 24-21, but lost to the
Jackets Wednesday, 21-15. The
Jackets looked good. On Tues
day the Lakers took on the Jets.
Johnny Richardson, on the
mound for the first time, pit
ched real well but the Jets
came on strong to defeat the
Lakers, 7-5.
The Mets won over the Lak
ers, 11-10, in Thursday’s
game. These two teams bat
tled to the finish, good playing
on both sides. Bullets defeat
ed the Bombers, 11-10, in a
close one.
The Little League added
another team to the roster,
the Astros, who haven’t play a
game, but promise to be a good
team. These youngsters play
their hearts out and we invite
you to come and watch them.

Safety Bills
Can’t Win
Forest Park Clvltans held
their final meeting of May at the
Barbecue Kitchen on Monday,
the 22nd. Guest speaker was Ed
Hughes of the Atlanta Traffic
and Safety Council who pre
sented “Safety on the High
ways.”
Mr. Hughes cited the facts that
last year in our Metro area 310
were killed, 1601 died in the
state, and in the nation 52,
500 lost their lives in auto
mobiles. If we continue to lose
our loved ones at this rate In
nine years we will have lost
more people than have been kill
ed in every war this country
has ever engaged in. More peo
ple under 36 will be the vic
tims of these accidents, out
of which the older teenager will
lead the lists of the deceased
from operation of autos.
In realizing the need to curb
this accident rate, the Atlanta
Traffic and Safety Council over
the past three years has in
troduced a total of 26 bills to
try to cut the rate down. The
first year, 16 bills were intro
duced and none passed; the se
cond year only the six bills
considered the most vital to
save lives were submitted—
none passed. The final year only
four were attempted as the bare
essentials, only one was passed
then was overridden by veto.
So it appears the batting aver
age to reduce the highway death
tolls will remain at zero for a
while and it is still entirely
on the shoulders of every dri
ver who gets behind the wheel
to either put his personal safe
ty program into effect or to
relax for an Instant and join
the swelling numbers of traffic
fatalities.
Paul Reynolds is still our lead
ing “baseball” collector, now
having turned in 6,650 Coke
caps for 44 baseballs, to be dis
tributed to our needy children.
The club welcomes Albert Hunt
of Delta Air Lines into its
ranks as the newest member.
We were also pleased to have
as visitors “Skeet” Dumas and
Floyd Palmer.
WORK PERMIT
YOUTH MUST
An employment certificate
from the city or county school
superintendent and a signed
statement from the prospective
employer are required before
boys and girls under 18 can be
employed, according to Geor
gia Commissioner of Labor Sam
Caldwell.
Necessary forms are available
at the offices of school super
intendents throughout the state.
“Under the Georgia law, child
ren 14 to 16 may work 40
hours a week in wholesale and
retail establishments, such as
grocery and drug stores, but
are not permitted to work after
9 a.m.,” Caldwell said.
No minor under 16 shall be
employed, j

kindergarten pupils from the i
Clayton Plaza Nursery and Kin- j

ty’s newest library, the Forest
Park Branch, May 11. Mrs. Ro

the youngsters, also was pre

The eager but orderly group of
children was greeted by the li

through the new build! ng and ex
plained how to use the library.
She then conducted them to the
special section of the library
for the children, who she in
vited each to select a book
and take it to a table to exa
mine it.
The children’s section of the
library is in the front, with a
wide window looking out on Main
St. It is furnished with tables
and chairs scaled to fit pre
school and grammar school
children. Books for children in
these age groups are shelved
adajacent to the tables and
chairs.
As the children prepared to
leave the library, they paused
at the desk to see a demon
stration of how a book is check
ed out on the Reglscope.
