Canned Goods
Convinced that ‘“speculative in
terest” have caused an unjustifi
able increass in p.ices of canned
goods in large cans, usually put
chased by th2 Govesrament, the
Army recently authorized the pur
chasing of canned fcods in smaller
cans, This strategy was recom
mended by Miss Harriet Elliott,
Néticnal Defens: Commissioner in
charge c¢f consumer protection, in
order to prevent abno:mal price.in
creases as tihe result cos govern
mental buying.
Airplanes
Sometime next Spring, aproxi
mately $500,0608,600 worth of cr
ders for airplane body parts will
be given te ths autcemitive indus
try. Just now, expert engineers
from various countries are study
ig the fcur hundred pacts to b 2
made in crder te determine who
can produce what. Meanwhile, the
automobile industry will probably
pool its facilitiess to promcte the
rapid bprocduction of 24,000 big
bomber type azirplanss, anxisusly
desired by the United States and
Great Britain.
British Buying
It is estimated that the British
Purchasing Commiszion in the
United States has spent or con
tracted to pay morz than $4,00&%
000,000 for aircraft, munitions,
ships and commodities.
Leahy
Rear-Admiral William D. Leahy,
now serving as Governor cf Puerto
Rico, will succeed William C. Bul
litt as Ambassador to France, rep
resenting the United States at
Vichy.

Detention of a United States
Vice-Censul in Indc-China by Jap
anese until rescued by French au
thorities is the subject of discus
sions belween this country and Ja
pan. Japanesz allege that the
official was directing espionage
upon Japanese military establish
ments in Indo-China. The inci
dent may bring to a head com
plications resulting from various
similar incidents in the Far East.
Bombers
The Navy has ordersd more than
2,000 great bamber flying boats,
weighing between twenty and
thirty tons, with an operating
range of 4,000 miles, Naval air
strategists think that the new ships
will give this country control of the
Atlantic Ocean bzyond the halfway
mark to Eurcpe and provide a pow
erful attacking force in the Pacific
if operating from bases in Pearl
Harbor, or other islands.
Extra Pay
Officers and enlisted men in the
parachute corps of the Army will
receive extra pay because of the
‘hazards of their duties. They will
get about tifty per cent more pay
than regular ratings.
Training /
The Civilian Conservation Corps
reports that 306,500 enrolles are
being trained in fifty central re
pair shops for national defense
jobs,
Bogus
American and Meéxican authori
ties are investizating the possibil
ity that many Americans may pos
sess bogus Mexican divorce de
crees, manufactured by a ‘coun
terfeit «divorce factory” in Mex
ico.,
To the British
The British Government will re
ceive 26 huge, four-engined bomb
ers and 20 flying fortresses now
being built for the United States
and, in e¢xchange, the British have
turned over to this country engines
to equip 41 “flying fortress” type
heavy bembers.
Pilots |
While it is almost impossible to‘
keep up with the complex pattern
of schools, bases and fields needsd
to service the expanding air forces
of the nation, Kelly Field, near San
Antonio, Texas, center of advanced
training for the Army, will gradu
ate 1,786 pilots during the present
calendar year, which is almost as
many as the school has graduated
during the previous eighteen years.
“Harmony”
Elected to head the Foreign Re
laticns Committee, in succession tc
the late Senator Key Pittman, of
Nevada, Senator Walter F. Geore
of Georgia, says that he expects
no controversial l:gislaticn during
the remainder of this session: of
Congress, and adds that his policy
mdy knows whatW
months hiold in store for the peopls
of the United States, but it is safc
to asume that there is sacrifice
|lhead for every loyal American.

No Early Peace
Accepting the presidency of the
Congress for Industrial Organiza
tions, made vacant by the resigna
tion of John L. Lewis, who carried
out his pre-election threat to quit
if President Rosevelt won the re
cent election, Phillip Murray bar
red an early labor peace, cautioning
the Administration “not to force
shotgun agreements” between the
contending factions.”
Peak
President Roosevelt recently indi
cated that aid to Great Britain had
reached its peak in this ccuntry for
the moment and that increased
armament preoduction would be
necessary to speed delivery of*war
;supplies to the British.
\ —
i Capitol Unsafe -
Becaus= the Capitol architect,
David Linn, advised Congress that
the roofs of the Chambers were
unsafe, both houses of Congress
are meeting in temporary quarters.
The architect said that a heavy
fall of snow might tax the roof
supports and cause them to col
lapse. The Senate is using the old
Supreme Court Room and the
House meets in the Caucus Room
of the new House Office building.
While members of the press are ad
mitted to the sessions, the general
public is excluded for lack of room.
German Agents
The Dies Committee recently
made puklic a White Paper, deal
ing with the activities of German
agents in this country, whose ac
tivities, in the opinicn of the Com
mittee, have been financed direct
ly by the G2rman Government
through the German Embassy. One
chapter cf the report detailed ac
tivities designed to stir up bad re
lations ketween the United States
and Japan with the view to pre
venting the United States from tak
ing any part in the war in Europe.
Bomb Sight
Bombers going to Great Britain
dre equipped with the Sperry
bombsight, but the United States
has declined to permit British® use
of the Norden bombsight which is
used by ocur first-line fighting
planes. While th2 Sperry sizht is
caid to be superior to any possessed
by other nations, it is considered
mere or less “obsolete” when com
pared to thes Norden sight which
remains a military secret.
Using New. Bates
The Navy now includes ‘patrol
olanes operating from Bermuda
}':nd other bases in British-owned
islands, according to a rec:nt an
nouncement of Secretary of the
Navy Firank Knox. It is believed
that the patrels are operating from
bases in Newfoundland and at
Irigidad.
CLAYTON COUNTY NEWS and FARMER, JONESBORO, GEORGIA
Baptist Paragraphs
(C. C. Buckalew)
correction: Last week the at
tendancz at the Thanksgiving ser
vice was reported to be eight. This
was a typographical error. Eighty
people were present,
The month with Christmas in it
has arrived., What will it mean? A
lct of extra expense to many; a lot
cf sorrcw to wives and parents of
drinkers; a lot of joy to little chil
dren; and a lot of fellowship with
home folks, as well as many other
experiences to many others.
| Well, preach:r, . what would you
like it tc mean in the town of
Joneskorc, and to Clayton county?
These are your responsibilities. You
are interested in the last person
within their bounds if you are trus
to your Christ. My answer to my
self and to my cwn question is,
that just what the angzels sang on
the night of the birth ¢f my Lord
“Good Will Among Men,” is my de
sire for my people.
~ We have averaged an election in
our town or county about every
sixty days this year. Each one has
been preceded by a campaign cf
some form. Omne crowd has be:n
!busy' pcinting out the faults of the
other, urtil we arrive at this sea
son with a definite revival of good
will as our great and crving need.
f we could let the ballot box settle
he issus, ii we could lcse like goo?
sporte, and win and still be humble
d tolrent about it, then, if wr
culd lay our political prejudices
aside and come to the House of the
‘Lord on His day, and worship with
our brethren, “confessing cur faults
‘one to another, and praying onc
"or another, instead of confessin®
“he other fellow’s faults and forget
*ing our own, and allowing our
-elves to gloat over the other fel
ow’s falls while we fan the fire of
hate toward him to our own hurt,
we shall be like Christ.” |

Last week came a letter from a‘
friend in & northern state writtsn
with a pencil on a sheet of note
hank paner. Our meetinz was on the
occasion of a pastoral visit to her
home during her serious illness.
She sent me a little poem, a re
minder of cur friendship, which
began Nov. 25, 1934. I quote it:
I Know Something Gond About You
“Wouldn’t this old world be better
| if the folks we met would say,
‘I know something gocd about you,
‘ and then treat us just that
| way? ‘
‘Wculdn’t it be fine and dandy, if
| each handclasp and true,
Carried with it this assurance, ‘I
know something good about
you'?
Wouldn’t we be lots more happy, if
the geod that’s in us all
Were the only thing about us that
folks bothered to recall?
Wouldn’t life be lots more happy,
if we praised the igood we see?
For there’s such a lot of goodness
in the worst of you and me.
Wouldn’t it be nice to practice that
fine way of thinking, too?
You know something goced about
me? I know something gocd
about you.”
T iguess that a church in a county
seat town is about the hardest to
pastor. In spite cf all that the pas
tor may do and pray, or say and
try to keep the house of worship
worshipful on the Lord’s Day, some
will insist cn bringing the memory
of some deed of another townsman
to church with him, and by that
be robbed of all the benefits of the
services.
There is no reason why we should
not all iive together as a happy
family group in these small towns
if we shail be just like grcwn-ups
instead cos children. I remember
that when I was a boy and played
too much with the mneighmbor’s
children there would a scrap arise.
My parents said we were together
too much. Maybe that’s our trou
ble. We iive together; we’ve known
each other from childhood; we
know the faults and failings as far
back as we can remember of the
family. Jealousy has scmetimes
arisen when one seemed to get
ahead when the other didn’t. After
all, we are just children grown a
little larger in body and in too
many of cur ways. We are as Jesus
said: “Like children,” Childish folk
when we keep on “pouting” and
“peing mad.”
Well, maybe you see a lot of bad.
I do, ton. But you ought to know
how much gocd I see, too; how
goed it is to be able tc go about
to the homes of the town in the
Master’s name; hcw hungry people
are to hear of something other
than this old world’s troubles. We
are mighty blessed people here in
cur ccuntry, and we just must get
together and learn the lesson of
}tms Christmas, with good will and
forgiven:zss.
