NATURE SHOWED US THE WAY/
Soil and water conservation
farmers cooperating with the
Upper Ocmulgee River District
have been busy harvesting hav
and small grain during the past
several weeks.
H. H. Baxley reports having
harvested 533 bales of rescue
grass and crimson clover recent
ly from one six acre field of his
farm near Ttex. The bales aver
aged weighing 40 pounds making
a total of 21, 320 pounds or an
average of one and three-quar
ter tons per acre. This is far
above average during normal
weather conditions, however this
yield was made during severe
drough conditions, last fall.
Rescue grass, a week peren-1
nial that is dependable for re - !
seeding is becoming more popu- ■
lar with farmers in the county
each year. Planted in early fall,
with a clover legume' it works
well in the soil building crop ro
tation producing a good protec
tive winter cover which reduces
: soil losses to erosion from win
; ter rains to a minimum.
In nutrative feeding value for
! livestock it compares w'ell with
’ -winter rye grass, fescue grass
: and orchard grass. Rescue makes
i good supplemental grazing along
: with annual clover. Annual les
i pedeza can be seeded on rescue
the same as with small grains
thereby producing summer graz
ing while at the same time help
ing to improve the quality and
productivity of the cropland
soils. •
Mr. Baxley has followed a good
soil building rotation in this field
of summer and winter growing
cover such as crimson clover,
soybeans, small grain and les
pedeza for 12 years all of which
have helped the soils fertility
and capacity for absorbing and
retaining moisture. Terraces
have provided a guide for con
tour cultivation which helped
make this yield possible.
