Transoceanic Cable |
Is Telephone First
With Southern Bell
Laying of the world’s first
transoceanic telephone cable —
to span the Atlantic between
Newfoundland and Scotland —
began June 22, it was an
nounced here today by C. M.
Eberhart, District Manager of
Southern Bell Telephone Com
pany.
The transatlantic voiceways
are to be extended 30 miles west
ward from Newfoundland to the
eastern tip of Nova Scotia via
another submarine cable, and
from there to the United States
over a 575-mile radio relay sys
tem.
The project is a joint under
standing of American Telephone
and Telegraph Company, the
British Post Office and Canadian
Overseas Telecommunication
Corporation and will cost about
$40,000,000. Service will be es
tablished late in 1956.
Mr. Eberhart quoted Henry T.
Killingsworth, vice president of
A. T. In T. in charge of the Long
Lines Department, as saying the
first cable of a twin cable sys
tem would be spun out across
2,000 miles of ocean bottom oy
summer’s end. Summer is th?
only time' the Atlantic is calm
enough to permit such an under
taking. Laying operations will
start at Clarenville, Newfound
land, and be completed at Oban,
which is on the west coast of
Scotland about 60 miles from
Glasgow. The second cable is to
be laid from Scotland to New
foundland in the summer of 1956.
The new cable system will
greatly improve the telephone
service between the United
States and Great Britain. This
service was inaugurated in 1927
and is handled entirely by radio
telephone.

REV. ROBERT H. HARPER
Habakkuk’t Faith Tatted.
Letton for July 10: Habakkuk 1:
1-6, 12-/3; 2: 1-4.
Golden Text: Habakkuk 2: 4.
Habakkuk is known as one of the
minor prophets, but he was not
small in his mental ability and the
strength of his character. He be
gan his ministry about the time
the Chaldeans were coming a sec
ond time into world power.
The prophet could not under
stand why the just God would al
low the might of the heathen to be
used to despoil the people who had
called upon Him. But he resolved
to climb to his tower to watch the
course of events and to wait for
God's answer to His people in the
hour that was trying men’s souls.
It must be admitted that Habak
kuk doubted God, but he really
demonstrated his trust by going to
God for the answer to the riddle
of the time.
And he learned that God was
using the Chaldeans to discipline
bis own people. Also that God's
dealings were not to be known in
the striving of finite mortals to
learn His ways. That just shall live
by' faith through international re
lations as well as in personal
needs.
They who think the Old Testa
ment is out of date should revise
their opinions as they are con
fronted by problems similar to
those that distressed Habakkuk
Let us learn to seek unto God for
the answer to dire matters of the
present. •

Clayton County
\> HISTORIC-BATTLEGROUND,
H PROGRESSIVE FARMING SECTION
Named after distinguished Georgia statesman Augustin
Smith Clayton, Clayton county is a busy agricultural area,
with a growing livestock, dairying and poultry raising indus
try. The county was the scene of much of the action in the
world-famous book "Gone With The Wind”. The bitterly
contested Battle of Jonesboro, fought during The War
Between The States, resulted in Union forces cutting the
last railroad line into Atlanta, necessitating its evacuation
by the Confederates. Jonesboro, Clayton County Seat, is a
thriving small city engaged in a forward-looking program of
improvement of schools and municipal facilities.
In Clayton County and throughout Georgia, the U.S.
Brewers Foundation works constantly to assure the sale of
beer and ale under pleasant, orderly conditions. Believing
that strict law enforcement serves the best interests of the
people of Georgia, the Foundation stresses close cooperation
with_the Armed Forces, law enforcement and governing
officials in its continuing "self-regulation” program.
