HERMAN TALMADGE SAYS
Last week a group of some 200 Georgia
men representing a political and geopraph
ical cross section of the State met in At
lanta and dedicated themselves to the
preservation of constitutional government
in this country and the maintenance of
harmonious race relations through the
preservation of racial segregation in this
State.
Those present were sturdy, stable farm,
business, professional and political leaders
who occupy places of prominence, respect
and leadership in their communities, coun
ties and state. They represented Georgia
at iks finest.
Acting with calmness and deliberation
they proceeded to lay the foundation of an
organization to utilize all legal and lawful
means to restore constitutional government
in this country and to reestablish the in
alienable rights of the several states and
their citizens to govern their own affairs.
The group unequivocally rejected and re
pudiated the use of force, intimidation or
any other unlawful or unchristian means
in attaining its objectives.
The name of the organization is the
STATES RIGHTS COUNCIL OF GEORGIA,

Reminiscences of Bygone Days
BY B. M. WOOTAN
During my boyhood days there
was a grist mill and cotton gin
located back east of where Mr.
J. W. Chapman lives. There is a
creek of water which heads into
Forest Park and whoever bull',
the mill put a dam across the
creek and formed a lake of water.
They tlfen cut a ditch around
the side of a hill and ran the
water to the mill house. The
water poured into a water tower
and in the bottom of this tower
was a turbine which ran the mill
and gin. At that time it was
known as Huie’s Mill. I don’t
know who built the mill but
it changed hands several times
before it was abandoned.
While Mr. Porter Huie ran the
mill he also had a store near by.
He stocked a little of everything
that customers wanted. If we had
long dry spells the water would
get low in the pond and the mill
would run slow. One day a little
boy came to the mill with his
father, he sat there and watch
ed the meal come out of the mill
and then he said, “I can eat that
meal faster than the mill can
grind it.” “Well,” said ‘the mill
er’, how long could you hold out
to do that?” The boy replied,
“Until I perished to death.”
At one time Mr. Elias McKown
and Mr. Bill Huie operated the
mill and gin, they later added a
saw mill to the business but they
had to have a steam engine and
boiler to pull the saw mill. Mr.
McKown’s son, Homer, ran the
engine. He got a large steam

REMEMBER—Let’s all fight
for ‘better transportation for our
town’.
If you give your children con
stant family love and affection
and keep' that razor strap handy,
they will create their own
healthy entertainment.
There are too many heads of
.families who come in from their
work and eat dinner and pick up
the newspaper and read them
selves to sleep while the Holy
Bible lies on the table and gath
ers dust.
May we live our religious lives
so they will be a force for good
and not just a farce.
The best motto is: I will do
right; to do right I must be
right; to be right I must have
Christ in my life.

"GRAND CANYONS
OF GEORGIA”
rXu
Near Lumpkin, Stewart County Seat, are the Providence
Canyons. The largest of the group is 300 feet wide and 200
feet deep, displaying a dazzling array of 9 colors, a cross
section of the eroded soil. Situated on the Chattahoochee,
Stewart was the home of a large number of Creek Indians,
whose mounds are now being excavated by archeologists.
One of the last Indian battles in Georgia .was fought at
Shepherd’s Plantation in 1836.
In Stewart County and throughout Georgia, the U. S.
Brewers Foundation works constantly to assure the sale of
beer and ale under pleasant, orderly conditions. Believing
that strict law enforcement serves the best interest of the
people of Georgia, the Foundation stresses close cooperation
with the Armed Forces, law enforcement and governing offi
cials in its continuing "self-regulation” program.
