Loyalty
Since little Johnnie’s personal
horizon had been greatly ex
tended by several months at
kindergarten, his mother decided
to inquire concerning his cur
rent loyalties.
“Dear,” said she, “whom do
you love the best?”
The youngster pondered the
query soberly and then replied,
“Well I love you best, Mommie,
and Daddy next best, and my
teacher the least. And in be
tween come a lot of dogs.”
For A Minute
Traffic cop: “Hey mister, your ,
wife fell out of the car three
blocks back.” i
Driver: “Thank heavens. For a
minute, I thought I had gone ■
stone deaf.”

“And did he?” one asked eager- ]
“Os course not, my dear,” she j
replied. “I had to tell him that (
the chickens take up all the gar- ,

horse.”

Soil Conservation Activities
. BY T. VV. COLE
— Soil Conservationist —
Eight farm and fish ponds
have been built this year, with
two more under construction on
farms where a complete soil and
water conservation plan is being
applied in co-operation with the
Upper Ocmulgee River District
Supervisors. These ponds will be
used to supply sufficient water
for cattle, fish production and
recreatiop. The ponds cover ap
proximately 15 acres most of
which was not adapted to culti
vation or pasture.
These ponds are on the farms
of Georgia Baptist Children’s
Home, A. A. Hammer, Johnny
Lee, L. S. Whitener, Collie Adam
son and J. A. Adamson. Two
ponds are on the Georgia Bap
tist Children’s Home Farm, one
being upstream from the larger
to serve as a sediment trap for
mud washing frQm a public road
within the watershed. Johnny
Lee has two small ponds.
One, two and three acre ponds
properly stocked and managed
serve many valuable purposes
when built on streams in small
to medium size watersheds.
Stored water improves and in
creases grazing on the adjoining
area, irrigation of gardens where
practical and prevention of
flooding of downstream produc
tive bottomlands. Properly stock
ed and managed one surface
area of water will produce 200 to
300 pounds of fish, a highly nu
tritive food that can be safely
taken annually without reducing
future fishing.
Each'of these ponds has one
or more acre feet of water stor
age capacity before water will
flow through the spillways with
trickle and drain pipes flowing
full capacity. These small ponds
are helpful in reducing the vol
ume of water during excessive
rains that could overflow the
stream channels below the dams
resulting in severe damage to
crops or pasture.

AND GIANT DAM
Giddap, hoss! The nation’s largest saddle factory, a huge
tannery ... and the South’s only glue factory ... are located
in Buford. Four miles northeast of Buford is the mammoth
Buford Dam, an earth structure almost one-third mile long.
Lake Lanier, now rising behind Buford Dam, will be the
largest body of water wholly in Georgia with an area of
37,000 acres. Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County seat, is noted
for the small brick buildings, at each corner of its courthouse
square originally set aside for the city’s lawyers. It also is a
center for shoe and clothing manufacturers.
In Gwinnett County and throughout Georgia, the United
States Brewers Foundation works constantly to assure the
sale of beer and ale under pleasant, orderly conditions. Be
lieving that strict law enforcement serves the best interest of
the people of Georgia, the Foundation stresses close coopera
tion with the Armed Forces, law enforcement and governing
officials in its continuing "self-regulation” pro fa .am.

“He that mischief hatcheth, mischief catcheth ...”
At one time or another we’ve all heard the expression
“just desserts” ... which really means getting what is coming
to you. As we look around we can see examples of people
going along from day to day without reward or punishment
for the way in which they live and think, but, in due time,
it does seem that each and every one of us get our “just
desserts”.
There are many types of wrongs that can be committed
. .. stealing is punished by a jail sentence, but a less tangible
sin like Hate, Spite or Envy is also punished . . . though by
something more intangible than solitary confinement.
As children we were taught “do unto others as you would
have others do unto you”, and it also holds true that others
do unto us as we do unto them. It is impossible to spin a web
of mischief and hard feelings without ultimately being en
meshed in it ourselves.
