'Push-Button Rain' Means
Profit to Tifton Farmer
A dependable 7^-horsepower electric pump helped
W. A. Fletcher, one of our Tift county farm cus
tomers, to greater profits this year.
Mr. Fletcher used the pump in irrigating 8%
acres of tobacco, 15 acres of corn and two acres”of
early tomatoes. His leaf yield was unusually good.
He expects to make at least 75 bushels of corn
per acre. His tomatoes sold for $1,040.
Mr. Fletcher requested and received the assist
ance of one of our rural engineers in planning the
irrigation system.
How We Help

What 4-H Means to Me
(Speech delivered by Geor
gianne Bro w n at District
Achievement Meeting — First
Place Winner in Clayton County
and Blue Ribbon Award Winner
at District Meeting).
I think that I can honestly say
that our family is truly a 4-H
family. I have two aunts and a
cousin who are Master 4-H’ers.
All of my other cousins and my
younger brother are 4-H mem
bers. My interest in 4-H Club
work began way before I was old
enough to be a club member.
There are so many reasons
wily 4-H Club work is important
to me. The fellowship I share
with my friends in our club is in
valuable. When I meet other 4-H
members I feel that I’m meeting
a friend, one with whom I have
a common interest and not a
stranger.
The leadership we receive
from our Home Demonstration
Agent and our County Agent is
important. They are always
there when we seek their aid and
guidance. Their interest in our
lives now and our future inspires
us to do our best. Our local lead
ers are ever ready to lend a
helping hand, with our projects
or with a word of praise.
I could not be speaking of
leadership in 4-H work without
our State Extension leaders.
Through the mour 4-H program
is developed and put into action.
It is there wisdom and planning
that gives us the opportunity to
go forward. Rock Eagle is the
perfect example of a great dream
and plan of one leader, Dr.
Sutton.
4-H work has taught me bow’
to conduct meetings, to talk to
groups of people. To be a part
of things and not just a do
nothing. Through this I’ve taken
a greater interest in my church
and school activities. It has
taught me the important of work
as a group, the pleasure of doing
things for myself and the pride
of a job well done.
It has taught me there is
dignity and importance in hu
man labor.
It has given me the ability to
win or lose gracefully. To know
the value of 4-H work is not in
the awards won but the work
done and the useful knowledge
gained. To believe in doing our
best without a thought of reward
is an important attitude.
My 4-H projects have given me

Why people who used to buy higher priced cars
are changing to Chevrolet
Sales and official registration figures show that
the higher priced cars are losing more and more
buyers to Chevrolet. And it isn't just because a
Chevrolet costs less, either!
If you buy a higher priced car instead of a
Chevrolet, what do you get in return for those
extra hundreds of dollars?

the opportunity to be a real
partner with my parents in max
ing ours a real loving and shar
ing home—not just a house with
people. I have a better under
standing of the problems that
face my parents.
Through my 4-H work I have
developed a personal pride in my
home, it’s grounds, furnishings,
our family's health and food. I
can truthfully say since L’ve been
a 4-H member I have increased
respect for my parents. I derive
much pleasure from helping my
mother improve our home and
helping with everyday house
hold duties. The simple act of
setting the table or arranging a
bowl of flowers for the house
makes for a nearness I never
knew before. The same with my
father when we do things to
gether in the yard. We are in
harmony in our thinking because
we work together.
My interest in our community
has broadened beyond my own
wants or needs. I am interested
in community improvements be
cause my club work has taught
me to think beyond my own cir
clTo be a happy, well balanced
person I’ve learned you must
share responsibilities and respect
others.
Now let us look "at what 4-H
means to you Mr. and Mrs. Av
erage Citizen. Your very welfare
depends on the farmer and his
family.
Everyday farming is becoming
more and more complicated.
Modern machinery, new methods
of farming, stricter cattle and
poultry laws make the successful
farmer keep on his toes. These
things make farming really big
business.*
4-H Club work is teaching our
young boys soil conservation, the
latest poultry methods, correct
care of cattle and swine, tractor
maintenance, farming, electrifi
cation. The girls are taught
