Soil Conservation Activities
BY T. W. COLE
— Soil Conservationist —
Woodland management and
improvement is one of the major
soil and water conservation
practices fanners co-operating
with the Upper Ocmulge River
District are finding. Many farms
have over half of the total acre
age in woods of which a large
percentage of this land is not
adapted to profitable production
of cultivated crops or pasture.
Last winter when sap of the
trees was down some conserva
tion farmers practiced selective
thinning of pine trees on the D
plus 6 method to permit better
trees to make normal growth
when properly spaced. J. T.
Camp thinned ten or more acres
of pines that were set on a six
by six foot pattern in 1936. At
this time recommended spacing
was at the rate of 1,200 trees per
acre. In 20 years these trees av
eraged five to eight inches
diameter at breast height. Mr.
Camp sold the trees for pulp
wood after trees to be cut were
marked with paint. In this man
ner some revenue was received
