Sunday, Dec. 23, was certainly
a popular day for parties. Mr.
and Mrs. Johnny Brooks of S.
Mitcheal Street, honored Mrs. J.
M. Carreker of Lotus Grove, Ga.
with a family party at which 45
of their relatives gathered to
eat dinner, exchange gifts—and
talk. It was indeed a happy ex
perience for Mrs. Carreker to
have most all her children and
their children with her.
Mr. and Mrs. Terrell Starr and
the children spent the holiday
in Jacksonville, Fla., with mem
bers of their family. The chil
dren were specially happy to be
with their grandparents, the J.
B. McKenneys - grandparents
and Christmas go together so
well.
Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Patterson
of Ash Street and daughter,
Marsha, spent Christmas at La-
Grange, Ga. All four of Mar
sha’s grandparents live there so
she was able to spend some time
with all of them. And it was a
job to tell who was most pleased
with the arrangement.
It was a scrumptious party
last Saturday (Dec. 221 at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Sulli
van on Woodland Drive. Music
was the key note, most of it sup
plied by that grand musician
Kimo Kalohi who for some 20
years delighted listeners to
W.S.B. Radio. His favorite in
strument is the steel guitar, but
he is master of many string in
struments. Some 50 guests en
joyed the “open house" hospi
tality of the Sullivans that '
night and included Mr. and Mrs.
Martin Burks Jr., Dr. and Mrs.
B. Holliday, Mr. and Mrs. E. Van -
Houten. Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Kite,
Mr. and Mrs. J. White, Mr. and
Mrs. G. Ewing, Mr. and Mrs.
Cecil Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Nor
man Jenkins, Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Noon. Mr. and Mrs. Carl
Lombard. Mr. and Mrs. G. E. An
derson. Mr. Joe Watson, Miss
Jean Hinnant, Miss Mildred Col
ley.
Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Poppell of
Conley Road had bad news last
week. Mr. W. P. Poppell, brother,
of Tallassee, Florida had an
emergency operation and is still
very ill in the hospital there. Mr.
Poppell was with him until last ;
week. The kindly thoughts and
best wishes of all their friends i
are with them at this time. 11
Mr. and Mrs. Dan Steagald and '
their three children have re- 1
turned to their home in Wash- i
ington, D C., after a very happy i
holiday with the George Millers
of Linda Way. Mrs. Steagald is, 1
of course, a daughter. i
Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Stewart I
have left Forest Park for Warner ।
Robins, where Mr. Stewart has !
been transferred. Mrs. Stewart. ’
has been teaching nt Hendrix 1
Street School, where she will be i i
much niissed, both by her pupils | (

"The kiss of the sun for pardon, the song of the birds for
mirth .... One is nearer God’s heart in a garden than any
where else on earth . . . .”
This gracious though points out the quiet magnificence
of growing things reaching out to the sun and bursting into
maturity.
There is little in the world that can surpass the peaceful
contentment which a garden inspires. A garden is a show
case for the gentle magic of nature's bountiful resources; it
is a place for purposeful, creative efforts; a haven for quiet
reverie.
A garden, in a deeper sense, is usually more than a splash
of man-made color, designed for the strict utility of decora
tion. We like to think of it as man's recognition of the clean,
wholesome goodness which springs so abundantly from a
great mysterious power which is always nearer to us than
we imagine.
and the staff. Their friends here
wish them every success in the
future.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Ackles got
home in time for Christmas,
after a prolonged stay in Peters
burg. Virginia. Mr. Ackles was
attending a scholastic course
there at the military school,
from which he graduated with
honors. An achievement of which
he can be justly proud, since he
was confined to hospital for a
week or so during the “term".
They, and their numerous
friends, are happy they are back
here.
Miss Edna Wells, Air Stew
ardess for Southern Airways,
nearly had to spend Christmas
in Panama City, when the plane
grounded for adjustments there.
She finally made it—a few hours
late.
Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Bartlett of
Pine View Drive held their
Christmas Party on Sunday, Dec
23. when some 20 members of
the family gathered round a
table just groaning with turkey
and all the trimmings. And
that’s the party Mrs. Bartlett's
daughter, Edna, missed. But
Christmas night made up for it,
when more of the family gath
ered at the Bartlett home for
another Christmas dinner.
The home on Barnette Road of
Mr. and Mrs. Alton Barnette,
was almost overflowing on Sun
day, Dec. 23, when Mrs. Bar
nette’s family enjoyed their hos
pitality, in a wonderful dinner. |
There was a big tree too, just
loaded with gifts for everybody.
Mrs. Mamie Smith was hostess
on Christmas Day to her daugh

Mrs. Douglas Harman, and their I
children of Toccoa, Ga. Also a |

Mr. and Mrs. Guy Anderson of
Murray Lake had a special joy
this Christmas. It was the first
time they could watch their first
grandchild look at Christmas.
Son Jimmy and his wife and
young Stanley were among the
family gathered at the home for
dinner. And believe you me, that

The Club House at Murray
Lake made a lovely setting for
a family get-together during the
holiday. Mr. and Mrs. Russell R.
Broadwell of Murray Lake were
hosts to .the “Broadwell Clan”
and around 30 folks made merry
with Christmas fare and a social
time down at the club.
