GEORGIA EASTER SEAL PROCLAMATION—AtIanta, Georgia
—Mr. George A. Haas, President of the Georgia Society for Crippled
Children and Adults, Inc., left of Atlanta, receiving the proclamation
from Governor Ernest Vandiver. The proclamation, issued from the

Mrs. Evans Talks on Korea
At FP Woman's Club Meet
It was international affairs
night at the February meeting of
Forest Park Woman’s Club. With
/ world conditions what they are
today, better understanding of
the people of the world is of vital
importance, and our Federation
is especially concerned with this
problem.
Mrs. David J. Evans, a charter
member and the first president
of the club, was speaker. She
was introduced by Mrs. Alice
Martin, Chairman of Interna
tional Affairs Department, and
spoke on Korea.
Although the country might be
described as somewhat bleak
and desolate, the beauty of Ko
rea lies in its people. South Ko
rea’s soil was compared with
that of Georgia—red clay. Much
of the timber has been cut for
fuel. The remaining pine trees,
unlike the tall straight ones df
our state, were gnarled and
twisted. With all its rich natural
resources, South Korea is a poor
country because it lacks the fa
cilities to mine and manufacture

largely on agriculture.
But what ,of the people them
selves? Mrs. Evans described
them as charming, and gave
some examples of their tradi
tions and customs. For instance,
red is worn only by young chil
dren and colored skirts are dis
carded by women before they
reach middle age in favor of
black or brown. When men reach
55 years of age they wear a spe

come even more honored and
revered. They are pipe smokers
and as they get older, the stems
of their pipes get longer.
The Koreans are a cultured
people. Before a girl finishes
middle school, she must be able
to play the piano, sing and sew.
Mrs. Evans brought some ar

Korean dress made especially for
her. Among other things was a
thimble made of cloth and

SOIL CONSERVATION ACTIVITIES
By TOM COLE
Thirteen farm and fish ponds
were stocked with Blue Gill
Bream and Shellcracker fish
Thursday, January Bth. Nine of
these ponds were built during
1958 being requested by farmers
cooperating with the Upper Oc
mulgee River District Supervisors
of Soil Conservation Service.
These farmers are: A. L. Woot
ton, A. M. Kendrick, W. H. Ben
nefield, W. E. Rawls, M. H. Pitts,
R. E. Brooks, W. W. Dixon, J. H.
Voyles and P. M. Worley.
Four of the ponds stocked were
old ponds that had been.drained
and the fish killed and removed.
This is the only way known at
present to correct a pond that is
out of balance resulting in poor
fishing. Owners of these ponds
are: Manse Waldrop, E. S. Kemp,
F. P. Sudderth and Atlanta Ord
nance Depot Pond. The thirteen
ponds contain a total of 30*4
acres.

To get and maintain good fish
ing these pond owners will apply
8-8-2 fertilizer at the rate of 1,000
pounds per acre per year start
ing in early spring making 10 to
12 applications until early fall
when water cools. There is a 20-
20-5 fertilizer that some may use
at the rate of 40 pounds per acre.
Mineral fertilizer is a must in
getting good fishing from farm
ponds as the nitrogen, phosphate
and murate of potash stimulate
the growth of algae, a microscop
ic under water plant that pro
vides food for bugs and insects
which in turn are eaten by the
fish.
Managed properly one surface
acre of pond will produce 400
pounds of fish annually and 200
pounds can be safely removed
without harm to future fishing.
Two- hundred pounds of fish, a
wholesome food at fifty cents a
pound means a gross return of
SIOO per acre per year.
