My Experiences As State 4-H President
By GEORG I ANNE BROWN
I have been a 4-H member for
eight years—eight years in an ।
organization that is not just a |
club, but away of life for me ,
and thousands of other young
people. Last year was the most
outstanding year of my 4-H I
membership In August. 1958 11
was elected State 4-H Council
President for 1959. Being elected
in itself was an honor, but rep
resenting the 144,657 4-H mem
bers throughout Georgia was an .
even greater honor. To know ;
that the majority of the mem
bers have confidence in you is a
wonderful feeling.
My term as president began ■
Jan. 1. 1959. I couldn’t begin to ।
write all of the wonderful things
that happened to me as presi- ;
dent, but I would like to tell you ।
a few of the most outstanding ।
events in which I participated, i
In February. 1959, a Donor’s 11
Banquet was held at the Dinkier ;
Plaza in Atlanta. This banquet ।;
was to honor friends and sup-I ]
porters of 4-H. Being State presi- i i
dent, I presided at this ban- ]
quet.
In March came National 4-H 1
Week, and the State officers 1
were guests of the Master 4-H <
Club members that week-end.: i
We attended meet ings about the i <

|day begins National 4-H Week,
'and 4-H Sunday services are
j held each year at Druid Hills
। Baptist Church in Atlanta. Dr.
i Louie D. Newton is pastor. The
; State 4-H officers were on Dr.
; Newton’s Sunday morning radio
program and during the church
service each of us was asked to
express our appreciation to Dr.
Newton and his congregation
for their outstanding support of
4-H. After church services, the
State officers and leaders were
the guests of Dr. and Mrs. New
ton for dinner. The program at
church that Sunday was one of
the most impressive and moving
experiences in my life.
March was a busy month for
me in 4-H. During spring holi
days, State officers, State lead
ers, and District officers were
the guests of Mr. Zig Callaway,
who is affectionately called
Papa Zig by all those who know
and love him, at Zig’s Lodge at
Daytona Beach, Fla. While there
we had meetings discussing
plans for our 4-H program dur
ing the coming summer, we
wrote speeches, and heard nu
merous talks by State 4-H Lead
ers. It sounds like we did noth
ing but work, but like all 4-H
events, there was plenty of time
for fun and recreation—swims at
the beach (which was only 400
feet from the house), trips to
- the boardwalk, a day at Silver
:, Springs and Ross Allen’s Rep
s tile Farm, where we saw snake
s shows, held snakes, and even
rode elephants. On Sunday when
3
;, it was time to return home
. everyone was sad to part, but
Papa Zig had one more surprise
’ for us—a visit to Marineland
■ where I fed the porpoises.
, In July I attended Wildlife
f Camp in Valdosta. August
; brought District Project Achieve
-3 ment Meetings at Rock Eagle.
1 Over two thousand boys and
f girls competed for district hon
j ors at Rock Eagle last year.
, State 4-H Council was also in
August. It was held at the Uni
r verslty of Georgia in conjunction
i with the State Home Demonstra
tion Council. The main objec
, tive of State Council is for the
election of the next year’s of-
। fleers. During this meeting I
; made Dr. O. C. Aderhold (Presi-
L dent of the University of Geor
gia) and Governor Vandiver
’ honorary 4-H members.
’ ■ In September came State 4-H
, j Club Congress in Atlanta, where
all district winners compete for
( state honors and a trip to Chi
cago. I presided at banquets and
,' luncheons, and met so many
,' friends of 4-H.

My term as president offi

though I am out of office my
experiences will never be for
gotten. Now I really know the
importance of friends to 4-H,
for without our leaders, parents,
and donors, 4-H could not con
tinue. I know the importance of
cooperation and working as a
group. I am grateful to each one
who made this opportunity pos

proud to have held this office.
