END OF DUCK SEASON WELCOMED
Thank goodness for sundown,
January 7, 1961. At this hour and
on this day, the season ended on
the ancient and honorable sport
of waterfowling. With the finish,
the last hollow, dull quack on
our mallard call was more an
utterance of relief than a hope
ful note of enticement. We must
have lots of company, for nearly
every duck hunter we've seen in
recent weeks was either duckless
or timidly showing a bag of one
“woody.”
You won't get much argument
against the pre-season admis
sion that the duck population
was down. It was either that, or
the migrant birds forgot to put
¢ Georgia waters on their itiner
ary. Marshes which last year
furnished fair to fast shooting,
failed to produce, or attract
birds this time. And it was not
) because of a shortage of acorns
Maybe the biologists will be able
to make a wild guess at the an
sSwer. ?
We believe we are speaking for
nearly every duck hunter (shoot
ers of domestic mallards ex
cluded) when we say the most
rewarding part of a Georgia
hunt this late and unlamented
season. came after sundown—
when you could be thankful for
a comfortable place on which to
plant your tired carcass. There
were some few exceptions—in
cluding the twi-light roost
shooters—but the large majority
of waterfowlers sloshed out of
the marshes convinced there
must be a better way to build
character.

Thus, the fellows who set a
seemingly low limit of four
birds, now must be regarded as
the optimists of the year.
Knowledge that ducks not
bagged will live to fly back to
the breeding grounds, ‘is of little
solace. But it’s pleasant to dis
cover you no longer have to
struggle against a 5 a.m. alarm
clock, which turned out to be al
most completely false. If you
found it otherwise, we'd like to
know about it. Gy
What's new for the fisherman
and the fish this year? This will
be a standard question for the
next few months. At this junc
ture it looks like another year
for closed-face reels and plas
tic worms. But the inventive
geniuses still are trying to find
the perfect answer to a bass’
appetite. Among them is a
highly-decorated Marine aviator,
who last week was awarded a
patent on a magnetic lure. In
the drawings, the bait looks like
a miniature battleship. Lt. Col.
F. E. Hughes, of California, takes
advantage of the earth’s mag
netic field in his new creation.
The lure contains a perma
nent magnet. When the angler
slackens his line, the lure turns
in the water to align itself
with the earth’s magnetic poles.
Hughes claims that this wiggle
is supposed to be irresistible.
The magnet is adjustable, de
pending on direction. If the
angler is casting from a North-
South boat, the magnet is placed
lengthwise so that the surface
bait will twist and head North

as the line slackens. We doubt
that Patent No. 2,965,996 will
create much excitement, either
among the fish or fishermen.
One drawback is that not many
fishermen know in which direc

The magnetic lure would just
further complicate things.
TRAIL TRACKS—A year ago
this month, the Game & Fish
Commission asked for a big in
crease in resident and non-resi
dent hunting and fishing li
censes . . . The General Assem
bly obliged with a $6.25 non
resident fishing license, but
balked at the resident fee hike..
Sportsmen should demand that
the non-resident fee be reduced
in the interest of better tourist
relations. One dollar for three
days would be a sensible tax . ..
Grouse shooting in North Geor
gia and North Carolina has at
tracted many . newcomers this
year, and the respect for the
sagacity of this bird has been
considerably increased . . . An
open shot at this “thunderbird”
comes from pure luck or diligent
pursuit . . . The season ended
January 5 on grouse, squirrels,
deer and bears. Last day of legal
dove shooting is January 14.
This leaves quail and rabbits,
and turkeys in certain counties,
as the principal targets until
February 25. The coon and
possum season ends January 31.
FISHING ROUND-UP — Jan
uarq’s first week provided three
unseasonably mild days, and
several mentionable catches of
bass were made. J. D. Black, of
Gainesville, had four keepers at
Lake Lanier, with a 5%-pounder

6Y5-pounder in Florida’s St.
Johns River . . . Bob Lanford

at improved action on Lakes
Blackshear and Seminole . . .
Jackfish were striking surface
plugs in Piedmont and South
Georgia waters . . . Dan Joiner
reported a 12%-pound bigmouth
from Lake George, Fla. . .. Trout
and redfish slowed in the St.
Marks, Panacea, Steinhatchee
and Suwannee areas, which had
been “hot” for over a month...
Moody Phillips, of Hapeville,

League action resumed play last week at Forest Park
Lanes following the layoff for the Christmas holidays. From
the scores posted it appeared most of the bowlers lost little
of their sharpness as high scores were recorded in all the
leagues.
Leading the way and winning the Derickson’s Studio Star
of the Week Award was Herman McWilliams and Sara Blas
ingame, both of the Ball and Chain Mixed League. McWil
liams fired a blistering 256 game in route to a 593 series. His
total with handicap was a respectful 636. Mrs. Blasingame
who rolls with Ryder Truck Rentals had a 510 series.
We would like to welcome several new teams to Forest
Park. These teams will bowl in the newly organized Wednes
day Night Leagues. The new teams in the 6:30 league which
have their sponsors thus far are: James E. Sheriff Roofing,

the Forest Park Athletic Association. The 9:00 league will
have Carling Brewery, Jacobs Drug, E. D. Green & Son, Co
lonial Store of Forest Park, Lamar’s 66 Service of Mt. View

Panthers Clash To Win Flint River Tourney
The Forest Park Panthers under the coaching of Allen
Johnson came out of the rut Friday to win the 1961 Flint
Last Wednesday, Forest Park whipped the Golden Tor
nadoes from Henry County 45-42 to qualify them for the
finals. Hugh Gibbon was high point man with 18 beautiful
points. Randy Smith had 10, Pasco Tilson had 8, Billy Lov
ing 6, and Terry Stull was credited with 5.
Campbell defeated North Clayton Wednesday 49-20 to
qualify them for the finals. Jonesboro was not represented.
On the other hand, the Pantherettes weren't quite as
lucky as their brothers, but they defeated Fayette County
47-22 to qualify them for the semi-finals, but unfortunately
they lost to Henry County 33-25. Forest Park gave the Tor
nadoes a rough road although the Pantherettes lost. Henry
County girls won the Flint River Girls Trophy by defeating
Campbell.
If you missed any of these games, you missed some thrill
ing basketball games.
