Soil Conservation
By T. W. COLE, Soil Conservationist
Mr. Arthur A. Huie reports
having caught two big mouth
black bass we i ghi n g three
pounds from his five acre farm
pond in November which is in a
pasture of his farm near Jones
bpro. Blue gill bream and shell
cracker were stocked in the
spring fed pond in January 1960
at the rate of 800 and 200 re
spectively per surface acre. Bass
at the rate of 100 per acre being
stocked in May, 1960. When
stocked bass were very small as
they were from the spring
hatch. During a six months pe
riod they gained an average of
one and one-half pounds each.
This pond was a planned soil
and water conservation practice
with Upper Ocmulgee River Dis
trict Supervisors.
Mr. Huie states "I started ap
plying 40 pounds of 20-20-5 fer
tpizer per acre in early spring
at approximately weekly inter
vals until a bloom was reached,”
(bloom means the water is dis
colored by growth of algae un
til a bright object or a person’s
hand can not be seen when one
foot under water). Nine appli
cations of fertilizer were made
during the period of early spring
until fall when water tempera
ture lowers and fertilizer does
not react. He kept close watch
on the water color and applied
fertilizer each time when water
began to clear.
Fertilizing ponds properly is
comparable with the need of
fertilizer for plant growth. Fer
tilized ponds according to re
search produce 4 to 20 times
more weight of fish compared to
unfertilized ponds or where a

s regular systematic schedule is

• for an abundance of microscopic
i organisms and the amount of
i food available is dependent upon

Bream feed on algae and other
small water organisms. Bass eat

process of fish production.
' Cost of fertilization varies

fish can be taken per acre each
