FOUR-H OFFERS
VARIETY OF
EXPERIENCES
A /
By DONALD JOHNSON
Nine years ago, when I joined
the East Clayton 4-H Club, I
had no conception of the im
pact 4-H club work can have
on one’s life. I joined the 4-H
club, like many others, just to
get in a club and get out of a'
class. However, when I found
out that the County Agent and
Home Demonstration Agent
.really had an interest in my fu
ture and wanted to see me do
something, I began to take a
real interest. This two way in
terest has continued to grow
and now 4-H is as much a part
of my life as eating and sleep
ing.
While I was still young in 4-H
club work. I learned some of the
rewards and disappointments
that accompany hard work.
However, my biggest reward
came last year when I was called
by one of the State 4-H club
leaders. He told me that I had
been selected to represent Geor
gia 4-H clubs by working in the
office of Senator Richard B.
Russell, in Washington D.C. I
was thrilled, honored and very
excited over the honor. I ac
cepted and one week later I was
enrolled in George Washington
University, living at the National
4-H Center, and working In Sen.
Russell’s office. Thus began a
year of new adventures.
It is truly a privilege to be
able to share some of my experi
ences with you. First, let me tell
you about living at the National
4-H Center. While living at the
center, I had many experiences
which will always be among my
most cherished memories. One
thing that was rather different
was the fact that my roommate
and co-worker, Jerry Payne of
Winder, Ga., and I did all of our
own cooking, washing and iron
ing. Believe it or not, I gained
weight. The thing I liked most
about living at the 4-H center
was the fact that I got to meet
and know people from all walks
of life. These people were from
every state and many foreign
countries. I shall always remem
ber the night that Jerry and I
had cake and coffee for a group
consisting of seven people—a
group representing five coun
tries besides America. Thus you
can see this experience offered
me many interesting opportuni
ties.
While living at the 4-H cen
ter, I was able to continue my
4-H work by working at the
center when my services were
needed. Most of my work there
consisted of leading tours, reg
istering guests, setting up meet
ing rooms, office work and
leading recreational programs.
While living in Washington, I
attended George Washington
University. You are probably
wondering when I had time to
go to college, work at the 4-H
center, and work for Senator
Russell. Well, I went to college
from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, worked
for the senator from 12:30 until
about 7:30 or 8:00 and worked
at the 4-H Center at night and
on weekends. This proved to be
a full but most interesting sched
ule.
My work for the Senator was
most educational as well as in-

teresting. I worked a few hours
a day as an elevator operator in
the Old Senate Office Building,
then worked in his office doing
general office work. My work
brought me in contact with al
most every senator and several
of the congressmen. It was a
good feeling to have a senator
walk up and call me by my first
name and talk with me as
though he had known me all my
life.
Watching the United States
Senate in action proved to be
a very educational experience.
I was able to follow most of the
bills as they were presented in
the house, then in the senate
and then sent on for the Presi
dent’s approval or disapproval.
I am sure the long, impressive
so-called ‘‘civil rights” legisla
tion of 1960 will always remain
in my memory. The most ex
citing time in Washington is
election time. I was fortunate
enough to be in the capitol city
during the time of the conven
tions and the post convention
session of Congress and on
through the election. After work
ing on the campaign, I was hon
ored when asked to watch the
election returns come in at the
National Headquarters of the
Democratic Party. Naturally I

was happy with the results.
Being able to work for such
a wonderful and capable person
as Georgia’s distinguished Sen
ior Senator was reward enough,
but having the opportunity to
do all the other things that I
was able to do too really made
my year one of the most out
standing in my life. I shall al
ways remember Senator Russell
with high esteem. He and his
wonderful office staff helped
me more than I could ever be
gin to tell you about. In times
of trial and trouble or times of
joy and happiness they were
always there to lend me the
needed support and guidance.
My trip and stay in Washing
ton did not just happen. It took
nine years of hard, enduring but
very happy work. I know I could
not have accomplished this or
anything else without the won
derful, never-ending love and
support of my parents. Too, I
will always remember the genu
ine interest that my county
agent and home demonstration
agent took in my life.
To you younger club members
and interested parents, I can tell
you that every 4-H club mem
ber who applies himself or her
self can achieve great heights
in the 4-H world. Just remember
that our motto is a good guide
to follow: “To make the Best
Better.” If you follow this guide
you will never have a dull mo
ment and the rewards will be
great.
