the ten beautiful girls who gavei

the honoree and kissed him on
the cheek. Col. Seashole, who

the year and Greenbriar Grove,

blushed like a schoolboy.
Homer Powell was kind. He
said: “I won't ask Col. Seashole

For Top Attraction
TOURISTS NEED MOTELS AND PLACE
TO EAT TO MAKE PLAN OPERATIVE
BY JACK TROY,
Editor, The Free Press
A tremendous historical project and tourist attraction
is in the making at Jonesbore which could culminate in the
Jonesboro area becoming world famous as the most historic
town in the State of Georgia.
Why not? |
The War Between the States
TURNED at Jonesboro, and from
there began Sherman’s March to
the Sea. The decisive battle of
the War Between the States was
the Battle of Jonesboro. At
Jonesboro is Tara, and the old
Fitzgerald Road might well be
relocated to a point near where
Highway 138 crosses the South
Expressway, for it was here that.
| In the membership drive there
|is also a fine promotion. Some
member will win a trip to Miami,
Florida, via Eastern Air Line—3
days and nights on the Gold
|Coast—all expenses paid. And
'|the drawing will be done at the
annual hanquet July 20, 7:30
| p.m., Officers Club, Atlanta Gen
eral Depot.
Opie Shelton, alert Executive
Vice President of the Atlanta
Chamber of Commerce, will he
the Guest Speaker.
Now it’s kick-off time for the
chamber member drive, and the
goal of 50 new members ought to
be a CINCH, because we’re grow
ing mightily in Clayton County
and we need a STRONG Cham
ber of Commerce to attract more
and more new industry, and to
|treat the new industry we al
| ready have in a kindly manner.
the vastly superior Union forces
|came uphill on the fighting
| Confederates, retreated before
| withering fire; came back in a
| circling maneuver, fell back
|again, and once more made a
| flanking movement to success
fully end the war.

JUDGE M’GEE DISMISSES

Solicitor Johnson
Loses Another Case
Solicitor General D. M. Johnson LOST AGAIN Satur
dafi morning in the Jonesboro Courthouse in the case of
Solicitor vs. Clayton County Commissioners in Johnson’s
effort to change a legislative act without the proper pro-
cedure of going back through the
legislature to do it. And that.
by the way, is the only way a
legislative act can be changed.
~ Superior Court Judge Harold
Banke was affected by the re
cent resolution. in which the
Colirfty Commissioners followed '
the letter and spirit of the Leg
islative Act in setting up a Clay
ton Judicial Circuit but not pro
viding any help for the Judge or
Solicitor. Judge Banke entered
NO PROTEST.
The resolution set forth that
in the future the Solicitor would
call on the County police for of
fice and clerical help. It is ef
fective as of June 15, when the
resolution was adopted.
In the hearing Saturday morn-~
ing, Judge John McGee, of the
Griffin Judicial Circuit, sitting
on the case, dismissed the case.
Judge Bill Reynolds, Superior
Court Judge - Emeritus, was
among the spectators. He did,
not sit on the case because of
the insistence of the Solicitor
General that an outside judge be
brought in to hear a case that
was cut-and-dried by law. There
is, as mentioned, only one way
to change a legislative act; and
that is to go back through the
next session of the legislature
and change it. The act on the
Judicial Circuit of Clayton will
be amended next session to pro
vide regular help for Judge and
Solicitor.
