the key to the new merchan
dising approach, is 'the detached
pump island unit. The rec
tangular, glass-enclosed island
provides an extensive merchan
dise display area, as well as an |
office for the attendant. It is|
framed by steel columns that
support a winged concrete can
opy, the entire enclosure meas
uring twelve and one-half feet
by five feet. Located on this|
island—two at each of the
four corners—are eight unusual
electro - mechanical pumps of
unique design, '
The name, Minute Shopper,
was applied to the new-type
station because of the wider
variety of merchandise offered
for sale—much of it not ordi
narily dispensed through service
stations. Without leaving his|
car, a customer can see and
purchase, in addition to the
usual automotive and Gulf spe
cialty products, items ranging|
from golf balls and fishing
tackles, to charcoal, thermos
jugs, photographic films and
other recreational and pienic|
supplies. f
The Minute Shoppers are a
specific result of two signiflcantl
finds of the Company’s two year |
market research program. This!
research showed that 65% of|
service station customers pur-f
chasing gasoline never left thc§
vicinity of the pump; and that |
90% of them bought nothing in|
addition to the specific itemsi
they entered the station to pur-|
chase, |
It was felt the solution to this|
problem was to bring the mer- |
chandise out to the pump area |
where it could be seen by the|
customer. |
Gasoline is dispensed at the|
island, without distracting from |
the displays, by the newly|
designed electro - mechanical |
pumps. The pumps, two at m(-hf
corner of the island enclnsur(-,i
are slender, waist-high columns.
The pumping system is under
grounds, pressurized by sub
mersible pumps.
Another key development in]
the new service station is an
electronic device which reads
amounts and prices on the
pumps and transfers these data
to indicators placed separately
on the island. The long-range
implication of this device lis

Dorothy B. Watkins
Dorothy B. Watkins, Cameron Crest Farms, Route 2, Alpha
retta, charming chairman of the North Fulton Horse Show, is
to be a guest of honor at the Lake Spivey MASTERS Horse Show
Saturday, July 7, on the spacious athletic field at Spivey.
Mrs. Watkins is co-owner of a great Angus cattle ranch
operation. She does not have show horses, but she is one of the
moving spirits annually in the North Fulton Horse Show at Ros
well. She handles the show program, sells the ads, and attends
to many of the other duties associated with a fine horse show.
Proceeds are used for civic benefits.
Mrs, Watkins wrote this week:
“It was nice meeting you at our Horse Show. Now that it is
over, it is a real let-down, especially after the plane crash kill
ing so many of our friends.
“You asked me if I had a plcture. The only pictures I have
are those connected with cattle, since the cattle comprise my
business. I recently bought a bull in Missouri and had a snap
made before he was shipped down here last December. I'm en
closing the snap herewith. Don’t know if you can use it or not.
Would appreciate your returning it for it is off my husband’s
desk.

HELL OF AN ENGINEER rorrrenrnneees
Loudspeaker Stays OQut! s
Seventy-ninth Commencement exercises of the Georgia In
stitute of Technology Friday morning at the Fox Theatre turned
~ into one of the most embarrassing episodes in 79 years.
| Electronics are wonderful, but sometimes they can give a
lot of engineers a headache, and this happened to the more
than 1,500 members of the class of 1962.
Mr. Eugene A. Miller, McGraw-Hill Publishing Company, New
York, and prominent Tech alumnus, tried vainly to deliver the
Commencement Address, as the loudspeaker came on and off.
Finally, it went OFF, and Mr. Miller sat down. A spokesman
stepped up and said that he could not deliver his speech under,
these circumstances, and so COPIES would be MAILED.
Ameng all those engineers, there was not ONE who could
fix a loudspeaker out of order! However, no one among them
even thought of the fact that there was a battery-worked loud
speaker at the edge of the stage which could have been used for
the prominent speaker, same as it was used for announcing
honorary degrees and names of the graduates!
The climax came when a spokesman announced that, start
ing next year, Georgia Tech would add a class in loudspeaker
operation and technique!
Clayton County had three graduates. —TROY
